Should Roland Burris Have Been Welcomed on Capitol Hill?

January 06, 2009 6:39 PM

Rep. Bobby Rush of Illinois has been making the case that an African American should fill the Senate seat vacated by Barack Obama.  Today, Roland Burris -- who is an African American politician appointed by disgraced Governor Rod Blagojevich to fill the seat -- came to the Capitol to be sworn in.  With media swarming, Burris was turned away by the Secretary of the Senate.  Burris' appointment has not been signed by the Illinois Secretary of State...the party feels any appointment by Blagojevich would be poisoned.

Ap_senate_burris_090106_main_2 Here's how columnist Clarence Page saw today's scene on Capitol Hill:  "Contrary to Rep. Bobby Rush's prediction, Roland Burris turned away at the door to the Senate did not look like a scene from the segregated 1960s in the south. It looked more like a disco in the 1970s where the bouncer ordered him to wait his turn behind the velvet rope.  I used to say during his earlier attempt that Burris wanted to be a senator "in the worst way." Little did I know that years later he would find one of the worst ways to become a senator -- appointed by a governor who is an accused of trying to auction the seat to the highest bidder."

Burris is using the worst reason in the world if he thinks he deserves the seat because he is an African American. It stereotypes him as being a racist. Obviously no person of any other race would "deserve" the seat. MLKJr must be turning over in his grave.

I see two people who are trying to strong-arm themselves into the senate:
Roland Burris and Al Franken.

The democratic senators are trying to block Burris, but they are pushing for Franken. Burris is not bankable, so they don't want to take a chance on him.
Franken - well, they need that seat to be democratic. Obama's seat will automatically go to a democrat.

The democratic senators are playing it both ways to suit their purpose.
That's it in a nutshell.

Burris should be seated because he was legally appointed by the current Governor of Illinois. The Governor still holds his office and has not been convicted of anything so he is acting within the realm of Illinois law.

Yes. Burris should be senator. 'Disgraced' doesn't seem to know the difference between standing up for your legal rights and strong-arming. Burris should be Senator because he was legally appointed and there is nothing disqualifying him -- nothing.

Yes Of course, Burris is highly qualified, experienced and was legally appointed as required by the constitution.

Reid should stop playing politics of personal destruction against Burris and stop abusing the constitution, Burris should be seated.

He looks desperate, and Bloga is sitting back laughing. Burris acts like he was given a ticket to a lottery ticket, they he is running around taking pictures, one moment smiling and the next minute he is crying about how they won't cash his ticket. Its a spectacle. I am African American and I strongly disagree with with Mr. Bobby Rush, and recent anyone bringing race into this. At this point I would rather see Jesse Jackson Jr. as the senator!

He happily took the offer from someone who was accused and recording trying to sale the senate seat, among other offensive and illegal things. He acted as if someone dangled a pot of gold in his face. Again, this is a spectacle.

What does being an African have to do with this? You should be getting this seat by "merit", not race!

Posted by: Anna | Jan 6, 2009 9:55:12 PM

Burris is like the guy in the movie, who sold out his best-friend so he would get to hang out with the in crowd!

H think they should let the people of IL vote on a replacement, then Burris will know for sure that he's not wanted and maybe will slink back to obscurity.

I wish...

Harry reid is a complete TOOL, stop playing games! let the man come in and serve out the remaining 2 years ,he actually is on your side and will vote that way . STOP making a BIG DEAL out of nothing.

if you want it to be any more LEGIT in your eyes harry than it is , then let the LT Governor endorse Burris too.

There is over 100 senators in the senate and not have 1 being a African American is INSANE, there is over 41 million blacks in this country ,its 2009.. where is the reflection of our society.

Roland Burris seems like a fine, decent man. I have never heard him once say that he deserves the seat because of his colors. As a wise, judicious man he knows that he must pursue and exhaust all legal means to mitigate the injustice before he petitions the court where he will prevail, without one shred of doubt. The Senate knows that he will prevail. Please keep in mind that the federal legislature now owns the lowest approval rating of any branch of government with Bush's departure. They really have no business wasting the people's time. It's time to move on.

I suppose Obama deserved his election win too?

Once again our own government can't get out of it's own way. I say we have a lottery and give everyone one here (including the illegals) a ticket. Dozens of #'s are pulled from a hat with all winning #'s going to Washington to set up shop as a congressman, senator, etc..

Look folks

Wake up!!!!!!

This has nothing to do with race
This has nothing to do with Burris' qualification

This has everything to do with the PERSON who appointed him.

Blago would star in "Corrupt Politicians Gone Wild"

The guy has a single digit approval rating. Now tell me if you would put your trust and confidence in something like that. The person he appoints is basically dead on arrival come when the seat is back up for election. Burris without a doubt, would be a one termer and the fact that he was appointed by a moron would set the seat up nicely for the GOP to take.

Blago does not realize that the office of governor belongs to the PEOPLE. The people vote who should be governor. They also vote on who should be senator.

This appointment is not signing some mere legislation, it is literally one person deciding for every resident of the state.

Clearly Blago has proven that he does not have the capacity to make such a HUGE decision.

As a staunch Democrat I flaming mad at the bizarre way are conducting themselves. (reid, feinstein, blago, richardson, etc.)

Talk about snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory!!!

I keep wondering why the MSM uses the adjective "disgraced" before Blagojevich's name.

Is an accused a convict?

Why are people so fast at convicting a fellow American on the pages of the Newspapers and blogsites when a Court of Law with competent jurisdiction has no passed a guilty verdict?

Has the Rule of Law taken flight in the US? Or is it just a subjective and selective appication of the Rule.

Let Blagojevich have his days in Court, let the prosecutors present their case and leave the Court to pass the judgement.

Until then, all peace loving people should hold their peace.

The question to ask ourselves is, Is Burris qualified to be nominated to fill the vacancy?

My answer is a capital "YES"

This is a war the Dems can not win. A house divided against itself can not stand.

The governor of Illinois made a legal appointment.

Now, the Senate makes a legal decision whether to accept the appointment.

Posted by: Mr. Incredible | Jan 7, 2009 7:55:51 AM

Burris probably did nothing wrong.
I don't know.
However, the governor who appointed Burris is under a terrible investigation for malfeasance of duty.
So what leg is Burris standing on?
Surely, not Blago's reputation.
However, that's what Burris is doing.
I call that strong-arming.
