The Morning Meeting: Burris, Franken & the 111th Congress; Nightmare in Gaza; Health Care Costs; and more...
January 06, 2009 9:46 AM
Well, the 111th Congress convenes today, and there's plenty of grist for us there:
The President-elect, for one, is back on the hill to talk about his plans to rescue the economy; Messrs. Franken (Minnesota) and Burris (Illinois) are not Senators - not yet, anyway, and in the latter case, perhaps not ever; and Joe Biden is insisting on being sworn in once more as Delaware's Senator today -- even though he'll be the Vice President in two weeks' time. All of this is happening as the "Congress of Great Expectations," as our political guru Rick Klein puts it, kicks off this morning.
The other major story is the war and full-blown humanitarian disaster in Gaza. Israel keeps insisting it is taking every precaution to avoid harming civilians; but each day civilians are dying in large numbers. Already today -- and it's early -- a pair of UN-run schools have been hit in Israeli attacks.
Other news on this Tuesday: health care costs take a welcome drop; retail sales take a welcome tick upwards; President Bush moves to protect marine life in the Pacific; and fresh troubles loom in the switch to all-digital television. Stay tuned...

Shame on the Israelis. I cannot believe in this day of so called freedoms and human rights, over 60 yrs of declaration of human rights charter and the geneva convention, attrocities such as Gaza are happening. When will we learn to put humanity before politics?
I am ashamed of my country and our mantra on human rights and freedoms. The people in Gaza are living a nightmare today. Do something to save those innocent lives..yes, not everyone there is Hamas.

Shame on us for supporting Israel. The killing of infants, toddlers and children that are defensless. Shame on all those supporting these atrocities, the so called conservative pro-life and liberals who support this nonsense.

Yes and shame on Hamas for putting the people of Gaza in this crisis.
