Oval Office Interview

February 03, 2009 5:13 PM

ABC News Charlie Gibson Reports:

The White House invited us down for an interview in the Oval Office with President Obama and you wonder if they had known Tom Daschle was going to withdraw his name from consideration and his chief enforcement officer was also going to step down today,  would they have wanted to do it.

Watch "World News with Charles Gibson" tonight at 6:30 ET for the full report.

And, obviously, those were the first questions -- about Tom Daschle, about Nancy Killefer and about Timothy Geithner, who, though confirmed, still didn't pay all of his taxes. And Obama said, Well, it's my fault. He took responsibility.

We said,  "Was it an embarrassing day, Mr. President, for this administration?"  And he said yes, this is an embarrassment.  And he takes responsibility for it. He's the one who, in his inaugural speech,  talked about an era of responsibility, saying there can't be two sets of rules for the people in Washington and for the people back home who pay their taxes. Nonetheless, it is an embarrassment for the administration.

And, then, there are questions to be asked about the stimulus package, which is now being hashed out in the Senate -- whether the president would accept the kind of Republican amendments that are being offered, amendments to make things better for homeowners, to have more tax relief and, also, to increase infrastructure spending. The president defended the amount of spending and the rate at which it would be paid out. He  believes the vast majority of the $800-plus billion is stimulative and will be spent rather quickly.

I cited a CBO study finding that only 25 percent of the money would be paid out in the first year but the White House disputes that, arguing that much more would get out to the public, and much more quickly, than some outside analysts think.

And, then, there's the question of whether Obama is comfortable in the White House. And, he said, indeed, it has only been two weeks but, yes, I feel rather comfortable.

And,  he said we have so many big problems, but if you didn't have big problems then this would be just another job with a really nice office.

Wow a President willing to take responsibility for someone elses mistake. The last prez couldn't even take responsibility for his own mistakes.

Hey, Charlie Gibson... the CBO report says that 75% of the money will be spent in 18 months... I know you have to repeat your right wing talking points, but at least get your facts right...

Posted by: Mike | Feb 3, 2009 5:34:13 PM

Hey Mike,
Yep, 75 percent will be spent in eighteen months. It just doesnt happen to be the percent that will actually create jobs or stimulate the economy. That part comes in 2010 and 2011 when the economy will have corrected itself.

Goodness. How could Obama know if people reported all their earnings. This may be a set back in President Obama's eyes but not mine because he is taking responsibility (when it actually isn't his to take).

Posted by: KC | Feb 3, 2009 5:40:15 PM

Obama says he takes responsibility for tax dodging appointees, but we heard the responsibility line all the time from the Bush wacker too, which led to another and another and another.
Big O is the guy who was going to personally make sure things were different and above board but in such a short time in office you have again demonstrated that words without action are meaningless again and again and again.
So Buck Up Barack and cut out some of the parties and TV blitzes and park your "candy ###" down behind that desk and do some homework because those you have doin' it for ya should all be fired!
The clock is tickin' so who will Obama be pickin', lets hope he does better next time round.

Responsibility? What does that mean to Daschle, Geithner, et al? I don't know. But to Obama it must mean that you acknowlege a mistake. There is no penalty. No shame. No slap down, as would be the fate of the 'people' of America who continue to pay the salaries of those 'responsible' for this crap. Justice is NOT served and I sense my country is becoming my enemy!

mike...charlie gibson is a nice man but right wing? he is viewed as a liberal by most. liberals need to wake and realize you guys are losing it quick in the publics eye. how about get something done with this bill without all the pork and socialism. americans are waiting. we know its not the republicans as they have challanged this bill and are winning the battle in the publics eye.

Posted by: catman | Feb 3, 2009 5:42:57 PM

Well, lets wait and see what they do with H.R.45. if it passes, the masses will revolt, for sure.

WHY DON'T WE SEND EVERYBODY IN THE US 1,000,000? This would cure everything by the dems logic.

I don't think that it is an embarrassing day for the presidenr, however, I think it is a day of disappointment for him. How could his "friends" serve him so poorly, and how could his vetting team do likewise??? Surely these nominees would know that they have had problems with their taxes, or other issues that would cause problems with the process. Could they not have come out with them earlier, before being named? What did the vetting team think to let them through. Did "nominees think that the rest of us are deaf and blind? Did they think these problems could be painted over and they would sail through?? These nominees should be the ones who should be ashamed for their actions, and it is truly a shame that they underestimated us all, including the president.

Welcome to the real world Obama! It's a world that won't make excuses for you. You live and die with the decisions you make, unlike hiding behind the skirts of the senate. Things will only get much tougher and the people you have around you in the name of "change" will embarrass you.

He is not a leader. Media said he had the smartest and brightest people surround him, I don't think so.

"I cited a CBO study finding that only 25 percent of the money would be paid out in the first year ..."

Charlie - go to the CBO's website (and specifically the director's blog). That isn't what any of the reports regarding either the passed House version actually says. The senate version is at about 78.5% before FY 2010, and the House at about 64%. The roughly 25% figures are for the first 6 months... or until the end of Fiscal Year 2009 -- which ends before Oct. 1, 2009. (Assuming an effective date of Feb. 16, as the CBO assumes, that leaves just 6 months and two weeks in FY 2009.)

Fairness is not repeating incorrect talking points from both sides; it is asking hard questions with correct facts. This is too important to screw up such easily verifiable facts and you owe your viewers more than that. Please do a better job.

Gibson is no better than Cooper, Couric, Williams-hype the negative, ask dumb questions. Instead of asking about areas where progress is being made, or what the president thinks is working, he asks if he is comfortable in the White House. The media has contributed greatly to the psyche meltdown in this country, maybe they should all be out on the streets for a few months collecting unemployment.

The last prez did not take responsibility for his own mistakes because he did not make any. He was not even self aware according to the professionals who study behavior.

Americans have short (very) memories. The critics now out in mass must not have been born yet, were sound asleep or drunk beyond conscienceness during the first two weeks of the Bush Administration. I am not one to look backward except for lessons learned - and President Obama seems to have brought a new perspective with lessons learned to Washington. Too bad many Americans have not done the same. The fella will make mistakes - but I haven't seen a mistake yet that was engineered by a neo-con agenda on day one in the White House that lead to a war of choice - and that my fellow Americans is a fair comparison. One many Republicans don't want to make, but down in Texas stands (sits, sleeps, Texas two-steps) the comparison.

catman: "liberals need to wake and realize you guys are losing it quick in the publics eye. "

Sure thing, there. Coming off an unprecedented majority win (OK, incumbent Reagan in '84 did better) and historically high and stable approval ratings, I'm sure liberals are worried.

Did you the post by KC? Maybe he should have known if everyone paid their taxes, and maybe the people themselves should have known they owed back taxes, and maybe they should have told him, and maybe there is something you should know about your staff (if you have any)or maybe your company should know something about you(did you tell them everything?
My point is, we all have such a short time here on earth, and many problem while we are here.He has taken responsibilty. So why do you want to be so negative?

Posted by: fempharoh | Feb 3, 2009 6:41:05 PM

Charlie, what CBO report did you cite?

The actual CBO report on the House bill said roughly 2/3 of it would be spent in the first 18 months, and the actual CBO report on the Senate bill said that more than 3/4 of it would be spent in that time frame.
