ABC News' Stu Schutzman reports:
We usually cut living legends some slack. So here goes. Mike Singletary, legendary linebacker of the Chicago Bears, monster of the midway, Super bowl champ, hall of famer, has done it again. Singletary has a knack for controversy putting his foot in his mouth or exploiting other parts of his anatomy in the strangest ways.
Last year, the rookie San Francisco 49ers head coach dropped his trousers during halftime and mooned his entire team. "We were getting our tails whipped," he said. "There were other ways I could have done it but I think this got the message across." He's right, there were other ways he could have done it but we’ll cut him some slack.
Today, according to Yahoo Sports, Singletary has kind of done it again. Matt Stafford is the consensus first pick in the upcoming NFL college draft, at least that's according to many of the experts. But not according to Mike Singletary, who says he wouldn’t even consider drafting Stafford for the 49ers despite his stellar ability and winning record. The reason, says the coach is that Stafford has refused to consult the team shrink about his parents' divorce. Huh?
"If you're going to look at drafting a guy in the first round," says Singletary, "and you're going to pay him millions of dollars and asking him about a divorce about his parents, if that's going to be an issue, uhhh, then you know what, maybe he doesn't belong here."
Huh? Now chances are the 49ers will not even get the opportunity to draft Stafford, he'll be long gone when their turn comes. But that's beside the point. Actually, what is the point? A star college player refused to discuss his parents marital status with a psychologist, that's grounds to pass on a player who may be the savior of the franchise? What other reasons might the coach have for rejecting a player? His eye color? His grandfather's occupation?
We'll cut you some slack again coach cause you're a legend...but now you're really under the microscope.
