Charlie Gibson Defends 'Stolen' Enchilada Casserole Recipe
April 17, 2009 11:07 AM
It has come to my attention that Emeril Lagasse has impugned my reputation by intimating that I might have stolen my Enchilada Casserole recipe from him. (Click here to watch the video).
Balderdash!
Now I love Emeril like a brother. Great guy. But I am bemused that he would want to take credit for a recipe that consists, essentially, of a can of chili with beans, a can of tomato sauce and a can of enchilada sauce along with a bag of Doritos, some cheese, onions and sour cream.
Is that how you want us to think you cook, Emeril?
No, no. You do your fancy stuff with radicchio, cilantro, hearts of palm -- all the time kicking it up a notch with your fancy-schmancy secret powders -- and leave the blue collar cooking to us regular folks.
In fact, Emeril, I got the recipe (still, I believe, the most requested recipe in the history of the GMA website) from a friend, Mary Corkran, in Washington, D.C., and I got it long before I started hosting GMA; long before I met you, Emeril.
Now, I know you have cooked many great dishes on our morning program, many when I had the privilege of hosting. And I and my wife have made many of your recipes, always with great success and admiration for your recipes. But you don't have to own every great recipe!
So I urge all readers of this blog -- to strike a blow for us regular cooking folk, and download the Enchilada Casserole recipe -- Mary Corkran's and Charlie Gibson's not Emeril Lagasse's Enchilada Casserole recipe -- and keep it the most-requested recipe in the history of Good Morning America.
Anything more to say Emeril?

Three Cheers for Charlie!!! I believe in Charlie! I really like Emeril, in fact I cook in his pots, but I LOVE Charlie! In Charlies honor I will make his Enchilada Casserole for dinner tonightm while watching Charlie on the news!!

Maybe Emeril is just jealous because he didn't create that recipe...
Guess he didn't have a BAMMMM moment at the right time.

Charlie, you ROCK! Always have liked you! Emeril, here's a newsflash: Recipes existed even before your time. Get a grip and quit whining and seeing "recipe espionage" everywhere. My chuckle for the day!

This is so hilarious? Your friend Mary probably got that recipe off the label of some can of Enchilada Sauce in the first place. I agree with Robin and Ken. This is NOT news. It is a form of self-aggrandizement that makes me sometimes want to puke - and Charlie is my favorite, next to the hilariously funny Brian Williams. Let's hear it again for Susan Boyle! A real real person.

Hey!
It's Friday everyone - time to get ready for some fun. And everyone knows the news lately has not been much fun.
So pass the Enchilada Casserole. If it doesn't happen to originate from the guy from New Bedford, what does it matter.

For goodness sakes...this is silly but I can see why Charlie wants to go on the record and prove he didn't "steal" this recipe.
Go Charlie! Emeril...suck it up..BAM!

Have to agree w/ Robin, and the fact that this show needs to about real news, what happened. Do you want to be a news channel or just a talk show?
Give 'em hell Charlie, but it's not worth the effort, obviously Emiril is the chef God, or wants to be.
Sooooo laughable, so not important.

Emeril I love you...and all that you do...being from Massachusetts myself...but Charlie wins this fight...being a long time favorite of Good Morning America...it is a Gibson's recipe all the way...you go Charlie...even though I am somewhat of a cook myself...I love the simple & easy ingredients of this recipe...I intend on making & serving this on Sunday to a family party I am hosting...I will let you know how everyone enjoy this recipe...I know I will enjoy making it all from CANS!!!Thanks Charlie...& I miss seeing you on Good Morning America but do catch you on World News Tonight...you are the reason I tune in...I like your style of news casting...Thanks...

Yea Charlie! I have made his recipe several times, to great delight of the family, and would scourge Emeril for his insensitivity. Surely he should know better than to express his feelings in such a public way. Shame on him!

Emril,Emeril, Emeril. What are you thinking? As much as we love you...this is Charlie Gibson. We really love Charlie! The recipe is his. That's what I'm sticking with. But, what I really want to know is what does Dr Tim Johnson think of this recipe?

I like Emeril, but hated Emeril Live, his original cooking show from the 90s is when I took notice of him and visited his restaurants, ever since Emeril Live and that ridiculous sitcom, I have lost a great deal of respect for him and now after this incident, even more. I am done with you Emeril!!!

I really like both you guys and with the
world situation as it is, a good laugh never hurt anyone! Sometimes it is the
best thing that happens in a day, a friendly smile and a hearty laugh. Keep up the good work on your shows! I should mention, I don't like to cook and have not tried any of your recipes but do love to watch Emeril's shows and can't miss the ABC nightly news with Charlie. Thanks!

Great stuff!
I love GMA, Charlie, ABC News and Emeril. Everything in the news is SO heavy - there's so much negativity about the economy, frankly a little levity is welcome.
Everyone should just be able to lighten up and have a laugh. Who said reporters and television personalities can't have a sense of humor?! Personally, I'd rather they DID. Humorless people tire me.
I'm trying this recipe this weekend!

Ick. Whether the recipe belongs to Charlie or Emeril is beside the point. This is a recipe for enchiladas made from pure chemical junk food. Try making enchiladas from original ingredients - chili peppers, tomatoes, onions, garlic, fresh corn tortillas and cheese - and you'll see they taste SO much better. Personally, I wouldn't want my name associated with these junky ingredients, I certainly wouldn't feed it to my family, and I would never call it "dinner". Whole, natural foods are so much cheaper, taste so much better and are much more healthy! Live a longer life by eliminating the processed foods from your diet. The stuff in this recipe is pure garbage.

Go Charlie, go Charlie, go Charlie. To those of you above who are whining that this is not a news story. Guess what it isn't, it's a BLOG! I agree there's a lot going on in the world, there is death and destruction everywhere. But unlike the news article yesterday about "What comment type are you?" This is only a blog. Emeril needs to get a grip. I love this recipe, from Charlie and Mary! Now back to the news.
Posted by: Cheryl | Apr 18, 2009 8:11:39 AM
It's your Charlie. Emeril needs to back off.

Casseroles are for sharing, not fighting over. If you are a chef, and you want to keep a recipe to yourself, fine, keep it secret. But if you go on TV to show all the world how to cook like you, that means your work is in the public domain and anyone can "steal" it. Honest people give credit where credit is due. And to pick an enchilada casserole, or anything that appears in school cafeteria lines or at a church dinner, as a dish worthy to defend as one's own shows a jaw-dropping lack of judgment.

This enchilada casserole is definatelly yours--I was watching the morning you made it on TV for the first time. How dare Emeril!!! By the way have been making it for my family since that day and it has turned into one of my family favourites also!

I watched Charlie make this dish on GMA yrs ago, without any mention of Emeril.I believe Charlie.......

I am so sorry but in Mexico there is no such thing as an enchilada casserole. Also FYI, we do not use yellow cheese or ground beef on our recipes. We always use white cheese, shredded flank steak, cilantro and mexican cream as a topping. THERE IS NO SUCH ANIMAL AS AN ENCHILADA CASSEROLE, AMERICAN IMITATION!
