Finger Painting with iPhones
May 29, 2009 1:01 PM
ABC's Wonbo Woo reports:
Abcnews.com's Ki Mae Heussner gave us a headsup about this week's New Yorker cover. It's the work of an artist named Jorge Colombo - and a pretty stunning image, especially considering it took less than an hour to make the drawing.
On an iPhone.
Using his fingers.
Jorge used an app called Brushes, which retails for $4.99. It's one of a number of drawing apps available for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Jorge calls Brushes the “studio in his pocket.” No canvas to carry, no pens to sort through – all the tools he needs, right there in his pocket.
When I started working on this story, I looked up an email I'd sent in January to some artistically-inclined friends about a set of richly colored illustrations of Los Angeles scenes done using an iPhone. It was a link to a Gizmodo posting about Stef Kardos' work.
Stef is an art director for Disney, the parent company of ABC News. He's also an art blogger - and one of the earliest users of Brushes. Like Jorge, Stef paints on location - usually spending only 10-20 minutes on a painting.
"I really love the light here," he says of Los Angeles. "I really wanted to paint the sunsets or at night here, because the nights are very nice in the city. But it's very difficult with traditional media, because obviously you are in the dark."
The iPhone, with its lit screen, changes that.
The flickr pool for Brushes users shows off the app's versatility. I really like Xoan Baltar’s stylish street scenes. The brooding faces on Simon Willsher's characters remind me of graphic novels I read as a teen. And I love pretty much everything that Susan Murtaugh has done.
Here’s a link to our spot, airing on today’s Webcast.
