A Call to Let Madoff Off Hook -- Goings Ons Outside Courthouse

June 29, 2009 10:30 AM

ABC's Ayana Harry is outside the courtroom in New York City as the judge considers a prison sentence for Bernie Madoff:

The scene outside of US District Court is busy as journalists and victims line up for a seat inside the overflow room for Bernard Madoff's sentencing. There has been a steady flow of Madoff victims arriving, many have stopped to speak to the media and describe their losses before attempting to enter the courthouse and hear the fate of the man who swindled them. Madoff's attorney Ira Sorkin arrived and quickly entered without stopping to comment for the media.

Advocacy groups are also outside the courthouse promoting their causes. The Madoff Survivors and Victims Coalition is handing out a list of their issues. The group calls for Congress to develop legislation to address losses due to fraud, for Bankruptcy Court to recover and quickly distribute assets to investors and for the IRS to extend the number of years for filing amended taxes as a result of fraud.

The "Bernie Madoff Edition" of Andy Borowitz's book, "Who Moved My Soap? The CEO's Guide to Surviving in Prison" has also been handed out to journalists covering Madoff today.  The cover features a picture of Madoff with bars superimposed over his face and says the book is "made form 100% shredded paper," "compact design survives most strip searches"  and "can also be used as a weapon!" The satirical book includes chapters on jail cell feng shui and the seven habits of highly effective prisoners. A bar of soap on a rope with Madoff's face is also available with the book.

There is one man outside the 500 Pearl Street courthouse calling for clemency for Madoff. Self-described civil rights activist and comedian Randy Credico is passing out flyers that read "Clemency for The Ponzi One." Credico is arguing Madoff should not be sent to prison because he is a first time non-violent offender.
