Retired General Among Metro Deaths in DC

June 23, 2009 7:03 PM

ABC's Luis Martinez reports from Washington:

Among the nine fatalities in yesterday's deadly subway train collision in Washington D.C. was a retired Air Force general who headed the National Guard in the nation's capital and gave the order to scramble fighter jets during the 9-11 terror attack.

At a news conference at the crash site this afternoon, Washington DC Mayor Adrian Fenty confirmed that Maj. Gen. David F. Wherley Jr. was among those killed in the crash.   Also killed in the crash was his wife, Ann.  Both were 62 years of age.

Prior to becoming the head of the DC Army and Air National Guard Wherley commanded the 113th Fighter Wing, based at Andrews AFB in Maryland.  That Air National Guard unit provides the planes and personnel that regularly fly combat missions protecting Washington.

It was this unit that scrambled jets over Washington during the 9-11 terror attacks and received orders to shoot down any suspicious aircraft that threatened the capital.

After commanding the 113th Fighter Wing,  Wherley assumed command of the DC Army and Air National Guard in July, 2003.  He retired from that post about a year ago.  He had been promoted to the rank of Major General in October, 2005.

According to his biography, Wherley joined the Air Force in 1969 after completing ROTC training at Fordham University in New York.  He ultimately logged 5,000 hours of flight time in various fighter aircraft.

What a stupid comment. Sigh.

be advised that some of the major crashes and incidents related to
air and transit travel might be due to the dept. of energys new
technology research into high energy beams and cyclotron
research(livermore/geneva switzerland/chicago at chapaigne
illinois(fermilabs)as well as the HAARP project out of alaska. the
interference with the ions in the atmosphere affects super conductors
and wireing which in turn affects by cutting off input to computers
in rail transit and aircraft. four major accidents which are highly
suspicious in four months give clues. more will come!
I predicted over two years ago that planes would be falling from the
skies as the testing of those high energy projects were given the go
ahead. they have been as of this year, with the national ignition
facility project out of livermore and san franscisco,as well as the
new reactor collider at geneva which had an accident in sept-10 of
2008 and was just now brought up to speed. do the research and the
math yourselves and prepare the public and the traveler for what they
might be faceing. the national security issue and plausible
deniability is at play here. lives are at stake!

Awesome comment bro.

Be advised people of planet earth, protect yourselves from high energy beams and cyclotron. WEAR TINFOIL HATS!

Sad that anyone died in this accident. Part of the Bush administration's (and previous administrations) shortcomings was to ignore important upgrades of national infrastructure. Had we not spent trillions in a fruitless battle contest we could have put that money to good use repairing bridges in Minneapolis and trains in DC. A tragedy awaits all of us. Pray you are not a victim of the next one.

i wish jesus would quit rapturing drivers of mass transportation.

Instead of spending money on cash for clunkers why not spend to get rid of the 1000 series trains which are from 1976. These trains are very brittle and are like coffin trains.

But Biden and Obama love pork spending instead.

The NTSB recommended these trains be upgraded but this wasn't in the stimulus instead the stimulus had loads of pork.

But America loves their senile Biden who called justice stevens justice stewart.

The same senile Biden thought the new hudson river tunnel was for cars.

Sad that so many great people have died. It's always a risk taking any type of transportation to travel long distances, the 9/11 plane passengers, the Titanic. That's life.

I say the trains were going too fast, 50 miles per hour is just too darn fast. That's over 73 feet per second. And if there is a blind curve ahead, what's around it, is it clear 73 feet after the curve ? It takes a second to respond to "hit the emergency brakes" and then you need to have several hundred feet for stopping distance.

If the train crash was due to computer failure, two of the most common causes of computer failure is overheating of processor or other electronic chips, and intermittent electrical contacts. Both of these are mechanical problems, and the trains have a lot of vibration going on, and loosened electrical wiring is a problem long worked on in the industrial and transportation fields. Things wear out. Sensors get clogged or blocked and radio receivers get interference from the huge number of transmitters in the general area (every cell phone, walkie-talkies, cell towers, television towers, etc.)

Planes fall out of the sky due to bird strikes, metal fatigue, engine failures, downdrafts, shear winds, rotating winds and rain, sleet, and icing on the wings. And there are lightning strikes to consider too. And the rare possibility of small meteors hitting an airplane.

Be advised that I see that "charles b" is a complainer who knows little about high-energy particle physics - the cosmic radiation that hits the earth 24 hours a day is higher in energy, continuous, more widespread and pervasive than anything the high-energy particle research scientists can create.

There is no plausable deniability, just a non-scientist non-engineer crank who cannot spell words correctly and wants to blame the high-energy particle research facilities for disasters that have other causes.

Good points by Charles B.
The problem here is that most people have no idea of what you are talking about.
Beware of HAARP and GWEN.

Americans have been "programmed" for the three "S's" Sex, Screen and Sport.
And plenty of B.S., Brittany Spears to divert attention away from the "real news".

Tony Smit:
Who goes around a blind curve at 50 miles per hour?

Almost all modes of transportation are OLD, and antiqated. The companies are trying to milk every bit of use out of them without any extra investment. Unfortunately, the traveler will pay dearly. Buildings, bridges, vehicles of transportation were not meant to last..even with maintenance. Corporations will own, but not bare the brunt of expense. Eventually, they will be barking at the government for a bail-out. People need to see the government as a good thing, because corporations are only out for themselves. Ask the uninsured and unemployed, and those asked to work without pay..and those who continually recieve no annual pay-raises. But rest assured, the CEO's will continue to be handsomely rewarded.
