17-Year Old Completes Solo Voyage Around the World

July 16, 2009 4:16 PM

We first brought you the story of Zac Sunderland 2 weeks ago with Neal Karlinsky’s report of the teenager’s quest to sail solo around the world.  Well, the 17-year old has completed his voyage -- he is now the youngest person ever to sail around the world alone.

Setting sail from Marina del Rey, Calif. on June 14, 2008, the then 16-year old documented his journey with a video camera.  He survived on freeze-dried food and said he lost 25 pounds over the past year.   Battling bad weather, close calls with other ships and constant sleep deprivation, Sunderland managed to stay afloat for his 24,568-mile voyage.

Take a look at Neal’s fascinating report:

Great. And how much education did he get? This should not be applauded. What's next: seeing if a 16 year old can sit on a pole for a year?

What he learned on his voyage was more than anything his public education system could have taught him! Bravo.
