A Facebook Update on the American Town Without Running Water

July 16, 2009 10:55 AM

On Tuesday's World News, Steve Osunsami brought us a report about a Mississippi town without running water.  Since that report ran, a Facebook group was created to lend support to the cause.

The group currently has 43 members, and they're leaning on authorities to help.  One member wrote:

"Hey everyone, I spoke to the County Supervisor this afternoon and he states that the USDA has done an about face on the issue and is giving an grant for 75% of whats needed. Don't about you but I want to see them give 100% and reparations for being without for so long. What 6 years?? I also plan on having Barry Bryant, (County Supervisor) on my internet show on Sunday. More details to follow..."

He then later posted:

"If I remember correctly the county IS footing the remaining 25%. They are working with a nearby hospital www.northsunflower.com to raise the rest..."

Half the county I live in doesn't have city water... they have wells.

I love how the media piles on and then the government goes and throws money on something that is these peoples problem.

Dig a well in your yard.

But now we are going to pay 10 million bucks per person so that these 40 morons can have water.

It is amazing to me the critical comments above from people who have running water and don't care about helping other communities having a hard time with basic amenities.... which they never think twice about.

Grow up people. Help others and quit complaining. Hopefully you won't ever find yourself in their shoes but in case you ever did..... you would be grateful to people lending a helping hand so you can go to the restroom and flush a toilet.

Shame on you and your arrogance.

Jason, you do have fresh water, though? Right now? Be it well or city water, one should not mock the circumstances of others while one is comfortable. Just thank God, Jason, that you have water.

Chad, get off your soapbox you self-righteous fool. Helping your community is one thing when it's voluntary, but taxing others success without representation is nothing short of robbery. Like others have said, they could dig a well, most rural communities do so. Have a freaking bake sale, lobby some banks to provide these folks low interest loans to do so, whatever, just don't tax the rest of us to do it.

If these people have in fact been without running water for 6 years, there is no problem. They obviously have an alternative solution; and the federal government, of all things, certainly does not need to dive in and "fix" the problem. We need to be smart with our money. If it costs too much to live somewhere (aka too much to bring water in), then move.

Well said Mike.
I think Chad will take a better look at the situation and then change his stance.

I am not suprised w/ the Mississippi Delta. Without water for 6 years. PLEASE!! This is what people pay taxes for. Where is the tax dollar going? Governor Barbour, Representative Bennie Thompson, Commissioners and elected officials, shame on you all. What happened to funding, appropriations, regulations and monitoring? What an embarrassment. The Delta looks like hell and southern Mississippi looks like royalty. Thanks Steve Osunsami for your excellent reporting and exposing this worthwhile information to the public.

Ha. I remain in my stance that we are a country built on more than riches of oneself and as members of this country we try to take care of our own and not be selfish in our resources. Sadly there are many people suffering from poverty....some self inflicted others not at all. Have we forgotten that our freedom was won by communities banning together under the premise of wanting a better life and helping each other instead of a selfish king. We get to enjoy the vast opportunities this freedom has won us and forge the responsibility to not be neglectful of those around us in need due to extenuating circumstances. Thank goodness that we have a few real patriots in the country/community that are ok with taxes going to help others in need as well as help make this great nation great.

Mike did you have a bake sale so your community could afford getting running water into your house? Or did you just move into the neighborhood that already had it setup and provided for by the government? Continue in paying your water bill for usage of a system originaly created outside of your personal resource capabilities to provide water to your home and get off your soapbox.

"Helping your community is one thing when it's voluntary, but taxing others success without representation is nothing short of robbery" -Mike

Are you serious. What are taxes for then? Were you sleeping through your Government class growing up.

Because our country is built on freedom and a community that supports that freedom by taxes helping communities have the means to take care of themselves and prosper....wether that be building roads, having a judicial court system, town hall, parks, or running water.

The very same thing you are complaining about provided your current running water system in your community.....how ironic.

KUDOS!!! to you Chad. Ignore the racist ignoramuses who criticize you. I'll bet they are lucky enough to have been provided with the necessary basics of life and now resent others wanting the same. HOW CHRISTIAN OF THEM! Only in America will you see this. We have our sons and daughters dying in an unplanned war for eight years so we can live in a Democratic system of freedom--is that freedom only for certain people??? There are many rooting for you and only a miniscule with the unchristian and undeserving, selfish and self-serving critics.

Luckily your representation chose to examine the situation and help instead of being selfish.

Thank you ataxpayer2. I appreciate to know that there are people with sound judgment out there.

Chad, you are a fine young man, thoughtful and caring...as for Mike and Michael...the heck with rotten people it will always fall on deaf ears while they are able to take a shower or bath whenever they please turn on the faucet and boil some water for dinner...That is what is wrong with our Country, We are raised on the premise United States of America...but selfish people are only in it for themselves, some day they might need a helping hand and myself I hope it is NOT there..Come People of America ....D I V I D ED WE F A L L ...........

Posted by: janet ramsos | Jul 16, 2009 4:59:02 PM

I agree how could we not want to help our fellow Americans. It is sad to see so many selfish people. I have but one question. What is wrong with you people?I will pray for all of you who are selfish..Thank GOD for loving, caring people. Where would we be without them?

I also have my own well and sewer system. No one in the government comes and replaces it if it fails. I do that. In 6 years I could have dug them a well with a teaspoon. The best place to find a helping hand is at the end of your own arm.

I just returned from a church trip to help the poor in the Appalachian mountains. The local organization had trouble finding truly needy families. The family we helped was clearly more lazy than needy. Their two teenage sons played on their skateboards while our teenage children built them a trailer addition.

Why lift a finger to help yourself when all you need to do is get a gullible editor to help you whine to the federal government.

Come on ABC ... you can do better than this. Don't waste our time on this type of article, and don't deny the people of Mississippi the satisfaction and education of solving their own problems.
