Bob Woodruff Grounded by Huge Sandstorm in Iraq

July 13, 2009 5:40 PM

ABC's Bob Woodruff reports from Iraq:

This has been a long, interesting and now unpredictable adventure. That is because we have been grounded by a huge sandstorm. The blue sky turned orange and thick, nearly covering the sun so it looked more like the moon. We took off from Washington D.C. early Sunday morning flying 15 hours to Muscat, Oman. There we flew onto the USS Ronald Regan carrier in the Gulf of Oman not far off the coast of Iran.

For 3 hours we watched Navy F-14s launched from the deck headed to Afghanistan as we tried to reach Iraq by C-17. Entering from the North, we landed in Kirkuk but because of the sand, we could not even feed our video. I'm officially inside Iraq for the first time since I was hit and nearly killed by an IED near here 3 and a half years ago. For a long time I had been hoping to return to Iraq. Once the sand settles we will be able to see if and how Iraq has changed.

Just another element that makes that area of the world so attractive, I guess! No sandcastles there!!!!

Is this an old post? There aren't any more F-14s in the US NAVY.

The F-14 Tomcat was officially retired from USN service on Sept, 22 2006.

I only joke about this because he's okay now, but I was about to say that his TBI must be worse than I thought. The F-14's have been gone for quite awhile now.
