Divides in How We View Michael Jackson Coverage?
July 06, 2009 3:06 PM
Pew Research took a look at how Americans are viewing the coverage of Michael Jackson's passing. On July 1st the organization put out some numbers. Here is a highlight: "Eight-in-ten African Americans say they followed news about Jackson’s death very closely, compared with 22% of whites. Women followed the story more closely than men (35% very closely compared with 26%). Close to four-in-ten (38%) of those under 40 say they followed the music icon’s death very closely, compared with 27% of those between 40 and 64 and 20% of those 65 and older."

Overkill on the media's part. Enough is enough. Surely there are more important things we need to know. The man died and we don't need to know all about his drug habits. We need only to remember his great contributions to the Entertainment World.

MJ's fortune is not his own. His exorbitant life style was bought with the Beatle's Play List. It is time to return the 'list' to it's rightful owners. MJ's heirs can survive on MJ's estate - or not. MJ has squandered
tens of millions that rightfully should have been the
Beatles, their estate, and their heirs. Imagine if Paul
M. had bought the rights to MJ's play list - who would cry foul then. MJ is not 'put upon'. If MJ's estate retains the 'list', his estate will never stand alone on it's own merits..........

What I want to know is this, California was and has been crying that they cannot make the budget they need help they cannot pay for different services including veterans benefits. Then please tell me who in the world is going to pay all the police personnel who are going to be working overtime to cover this fiasco funeral of a pervert. I bet it will be the Federal government don't you. People of California you need to ask Arnold who is going to pay out all of this money for security on the pervert.

World News Tonight is confusing itself with Entertainment Tonight. Charlie Gibson's fans want news with some substance not more hype about a self indulgent entertainer. Isn't there something happening in Honduras or the Middle East today? How about the environment, the fight against AIDS, or Darfur? Common Charlie, leave the fluff to someone else!

I was beginning to think that I was the only one that thinks the media has gone insane with this coverage. When Charles Gibson has so much of this on his show, and the fact that all the net-works will cover the funeral, you would think that the President died. I would hope the city of L A bills his estate for the expenses of covering this fiasco.

Speculation and opions is all that is being reported these days and not up to mCharles Gobson standards. Shame on you. Wait for the facts Charles. The rest can go to fluff fake news shows like RT that pay for news.

I knew coverage would be like this. The first person I saw make (an uninvited) statement was Al Sharpton. He's sunk to a new low. Let's face it, Mishael Jackson was just a drug addicted washed-up entertainer. He didn't break any barriers. Anyone remember Jimi Hendrix, Sam Cooke, Nat King Cole, and all those Motown artists? Jackson is no role model for anyone.
Yes, enough is enough.

Michael Jackson's death is a tragedy as would anyone else's death be. It saddens me though that people judge a man whose only crime was being famous. Let's not talk about the body of work he created in his young life that impacted the music industry worldwide and thus the lives of many millions of people globally. Michael was human just like the rest of us, he suffered dysfunctions, just like the rest of us. The biggest difference is he had to live his out on the world stage to the prying eyes of the media and the public. Maybe he's a pervert, maybe he's not. One thing for sure tough, we only have the medias word for that and just because they printed it doesn't make it so! After all, their main function is ratings; or the bottom line. RIP Michael and thank you for impacting the quality of my life with your talent, your spirit and your heart.

It's really sad when there is so much unrest in the world, so much going on with wars, coups, the economy, etc. that on NBC's world news there was only 1 minute, 30 seconds devoted to the above mentioned stories....the entire rest of the broadcast was about MJ.....(I believe this was on Thursday or Friday) Can't wait until he's buried and off the news! It's pathetic that he has been the headline for so long.....and Sarah Palin (who cares about her!)....lets hear some real news! There is so much that the news doesn't cover.....like it's a cover up.....wonder what Obama, the senate and congress are slipping by us while MJ has the headlines....seems like there's always something! I actually resorted to watching FOX to keep up to date on the real news of the world....everyone else seemed to be stuck on MJ!!!

Michael Jackson is an American culture. Although for some American culture is McDonald’s.
And the media is what we made it. Heroin and Marilyn are the stories of all their glory.

I dont think its right that most of the "celebrities" that are going to be showing up for Jackson's memorial are all "black". Michael was not about race and anytime Al Sharpton show's his face he has to make it about race... Racism well never go away if people keep bringing it up.

This is really getting old. Like so many others they liked the drugs and this is the end result.
The coverage is WAY TOO MUCH. Thank heavens that I have cable.

"I dont think its right that most of the "celebrities" that are going to be showing up for Jackson's memorial are all "black". Michael was not about race" - Brad
Well said Brad, especially since Michael was a WHite Man at the time of his death.
But read quick because your post will soon get deleted like mine was yesterday.
ABC News is scared of frank talk about race issues.

How sad has the media industry become in this country when we have lost 13 incredibly brave soldiers since Michael Jackson's death and there has been scarce a word devoted to remembering their lives. They unequivocally did more individually with their life and death than Mr. Jackson ever thought about contributing with a few songs and dance moves. Only their sacrifice allows us the freedoms we indulge in and you report, as their memory slips quietly off into the night without recognition, remembrance, or report. Have we forgotten what is right and moral in this country? Inside your soul you have got to know what is Right and Just. Why not this once you try emulating the change the rest of the country longs for. Please prioritize your news coverage to what really matters.

On so many levels the coverage this is receiving is just wrong.

The coverage on MJ is extreme just like it was for Anna Nicole, but that's what America wants...more celebrity news. The media loves it, the fans love it and the rest of us just watch because we love to hate it! On "The View", however, Sheri has to get a grip! I'm sick of the ladies of the view and their racial and political soapboxes! After today's show, I've decided to stop watching The View. If it were only Joy and REAL "EVERYDAY" WOMEN WITH A VIEW, I might watch! Elisabeth, I have to say that I finally agreed with you when you made the comment about the young soldier who got almost no coverage on the 4th of July because of MJ coverage. I know you were merely stating what others are commenting, but Sheri completely went of the handle and took it as a personal attack on black people. She wasn't even listening to what you were saying. She went back to what MJ had done for the world...Asia, Africa etc. She didn't even think about what this American Soldier did for her and her son... He lost his life fighting for her and her son's freedom. In my eyes that young soldier did more in the short time he was in Iraq than MJ did in 50 years. MJ may have helped a lot of people, but he never gave his life for those persons freedom. He was a superstar, the soldiers who lost their lives ARE HEROS! Get over it Sheri, we all have to go sometime whether we are black, white, hispanic, asian whatever... and GOD doesn't care what color we are so you shouldn't either. RACE RACE RACE... Let it go! OK you loved MJ so did a lot of people. I loved his music, but LET HIM REST IN PEACE! I understand that THE VIEW is about these women's opinion on certain issues, but maybe Barbara Walters should change the name of the show to THE SOAPBOX! The View is getting old. The view from here is that the arguement of race and politics is understood and the hot topics need to get other peoples VIEWS! Regular, everyday commom people of all races and political views. Ask us to comment on the issues and we will give you our humble opinions rather than the celebrity views! Joy and sometimes Whoopi will do that "SOMETIMES"! The other two just become annoying! I love to watch ABC news and shows, but not at 10:00 am anymore! YUK!

I guess everyones entitled to their own opinion.
So heres mine...Michael Jackson is and always will be the icon that made all the difference on how music was and still is being made.no matter who wants to admit it or not, he brought the music, style and, dance moves that new and older bands are tryen to do. He opened the doors for the music everyone listens to. he went through more things in his life doing that than anyone. He will always be remembered as a legend. Nobody nows the truth about the alligations that were made against him. And i will never believe them anyways.
REST IN PEACE MICHAEL...YOU WILL FOREVER BE MISSED....

Overkill. Granted, he was and amazing talent. I don't suggest he doesn't deserve to be celebrated, and mourned. But what was basically channel-to-channel all day coverage of Jackson and free publicity for media types and celebrities displaced what might have been deeper coverage of Obama's hapless "negotiations" with the Russians, Servicemen and women's sacrifices on the battlefield, and on and on. Perspective continues to be lost and ABC News continues to play a role.
