Divides in How We View Michael Jackson Coverage?
July 06, 2009 3:06 PM
Pew Research took a look at how Americans are viewing the coverage of Michael Jackson's passing. On July 1st the organization put out some numbers. Here is a highlight: "Eight-in-ten African Americans say they followed news about Jackson’s death very closely, compared with 22% of whites. Women followed the story more closely than men (35% very closely compared with 26%). Close to four-in-ten (38%) of those under 40 say they followed the music icon’s death very closely, compared with 27% of those between 40 and 64 and 20% of those 65 and older."

I think what many of you are missing in your complaints about the coverage is the fact that Michael Jackson's music and iconic moves provided a backdrop to the lives of those of us on the tail end of the baby boom - he was always there, omnipresent. We literally grew up with him. And this last week of coverage is like a public shiva - celebrating his life; now he's been publically memorialized, is buried, and we have to move on.
One more thing - what a cynical, judgmental bunch of folks out there; I am now of the opinion he was as innocent in his interactions with children as he claimed to be - his human nature was just pure - as opposed to the hardened souls of his critics. RIP, Michael.

Really!?
Are you talking about the man who took drugs?
Are you talking about the man who denied his children a day to day loving mother?
Are you talking about the man who has a line of debtors at his door?
Are you talking about the man who wasn't a peace with his God given appearance?
[sarcasm]
Yeah, his human nature was pure as the driven snow.
[/sarcasm]
