Does the Banner on Mt. Rushmore Represent Freedom of Speech or Trespassing?
July 08, 2009 5:28 PM
Earlier today, activists from Greenpeace descended upon Mt. Rushmore and posted a banner reading "America honors leaders not politicians: Stop Global Warming." The massive banner measured 2,300 square feet and featured a picture of President Obama. The stint was to bring attention to global warming -- Greenpeace feels that Obama has not done enough to fight climate change.
A dozen Greenpeace activists were arrested -- they scaled the mountain using rock anchors put in place by the National Park Service. Anyone who climbs Mt. Rushmore can be subject to a trespassing charge, and those arrested are scheduled to make a federal court appearance later today.
Tell us, are you offended by Greenpeace's actions? Is their protest in the name of freedom of speech, or are they trespassing and defacing a national treasure?

Greenpeace is doing us all a favor by advocating for our future. Keep it up.

Well I happen to agree with the sentiment, but I do agree with the Graffiti.
I have freedom of Speech but not to deface my neighbors house, or a public building.
Poor way of expressing themselves I'd say. Ever wonder why Greenpeace has been around for years but5 seem to fail at changing things? They need to change first.
IU think they confuse the message with their organization.

Greenpeace has it right. Obama needs to get it in gear and act now to save our planet.

If we are more concerned with trespassing than with global warming we've got a long road ahead. Thanks Greenpeace for sending a message that can't be ignored to the G8 in Italy this week.

They have the right to speak out on the issue, but not by trespassing on Federal grounds. There are legitimate ways to communicate your message, freely and without restraint in America. Take any issue worth attention. Did advocates for breast cancer research violate trespassing laws to communicate their message? Or have they followed legitimate forums to grow their message year after year. I think "stunts" like this delegitimize Greenpeace rather than give them the true voice they need.

Complete disrespect. I have lost all respect for GreenPeace's mission after this stunt. Disgrace to an American treasure. Let's just paint over the Declaration of Independence or scratch the liberty bell next time.

Rubbish - the global warming is all rubbish. Every planet in the solar system is warming!
Protesting in this way is more about exploitation of their own group than the cause.

Though I disagree with their assertions about global warming, I think we would do well to remember the words of former Supreme Court justice Hugo Black: "If we do not protect speech we despise, this will someday threaten the speech we cherish."

Greepeace is doing nothing more than promoting a religion. Anyone else would be charged, so should they.

Uh, isn't a National Monument owned by all of us? And isn't the First Amendment still operational? And if WE own the National assets, don't WE, by definition, also have responsibility for the condition of the planet we all share? 'Cuz if you leave it to the Gumint, the Gumint won't do anything for WE, only for their deep-pocket friends. Who, strangely enough, are forced to share the same air as the rest of us. Let the freak flag fly!

Thankfully, we have the rule of law which allows us to stop them if we can and punish them when they are caught. Sure, if the internet isn't a good enough tool for them, then they get to pay the price when they break a Just Law.

Greenpeace recognizes only one point of view: theirs. Everybody else is dead wrong (as they think). So... they hammer their opinion in our throat as hard as they can, lawfully or not.
It is interesting to note, that they are arrested not for speech, but for trespassing. Speak whatever you wish, but where it is lawful.

There are other means to have exercise the right to say what Greenpeace said. They were trespassing and defacing a national treasure. They are guilty. The sentence: Take them to the top of Mt. Rushmore. Tell them that they are causing global warming by making so many Americans mad - their temper heat up. Toss them off as an example of what happens to idiots who deface our parks and monuments. Benefit: The wildlife gets a free meal.

Real poor way of expressing ones opinion. I hope all those involved are prosicuted to the full extent of the law. I'm surprised they got as far as they did. Shows alot about the security of one of our nations most popular tourist areas. Kind of scary isn't it.

Obama cannot save our planet, he is one man. We all have to do our part.
These people were trespassing and arrested as should have happened.

100 years from now, this will be looked on as a sane voice in a culture that was bent on collapsing through selfishness and ignorance.

This is yet another example of bed wetting Volvo driving (40 years old living with parents) liberals. They will undoubtedly sue on the grounds of freedom of speech which is total BS. No one has the right to deface a national treasure let alone place a picture of Obama that close to the founding fathers of our nation.
