LA Taxpayers Picking Up A Pricey Tab for Jackson Memorials

July 09, 2009 12:25 PM

So how much did the Michael Jackson memorialization cost the city of Los Angeles?  Turns out the extra police, the overtime, the logistics, tallies to $1.4 million in fees for LA.  The city tried to solicit donations from the public to help defray costs.  That didn't really work.  Now the city attorney wants to know exactly why LA ended up absorbing the costs and if there's a way to force someone to chip in.

Is it out of line to make the Jackson estate, worth hundreds of millions (and rising due to current sales), to cover the cost of this spectacle?? If it is out of line, then it shouldn't have been held in the first place.

so why didn't every single person woh makes their living via the music industry who attended that "lovefest" pay thier share?

I am not a big MJ fan at all, BUT one thing is undeniable. He pretty much saved the entire musuc industry in the early 80's. Everyone from Madonna to "PDiddy" owes their careers to him.

Let them step up and pay for this thing!

I'll bet they will come up with some way to "donate" their time to a tribute to Michael telethon, or album or soemthing to raise money, rather than part with their own.

The city was grossly negligent for even allowing this thing to happen without a way for it to be paid for. Especially given California's current econmic condition! Either Jackson's family or the celebs should have stepped up and owned this thing.

A lot has been written since MJ died - some I agree with and some I don't. But Mike_C is absolultey right by stating "the city was grossly negligent for even allowing this thing to happen without a way for it to be paid for." The details of how the extra city expense would be covered should have been worked out before the event ever took place.

I heard that the Staples is owned by the group which was organising the London concerts. They should pay for it.

when my parents died we had to pay for the police escort which was required to drive from the church to the cemetary. they even told us how many police we had to pay for based on how many cars we estimated would be in the procession. we overestimated but still had to pay for the extra police. why doesn't the jackson estate have to pay for his funeral? why do the taxpayers have to pay for it?

I think that his estate should foot the bill, eventhough LA made far more than 1.4 million from the event.

So why wasn't this resolved BEFORE it happened. It took 2 weeks to bury him I'm sure someone would have thought of this before it happened? Bill the estate. There will be millions left over. Besides, doesn't MJ owe us for a trial??????

Let the Staples Center contribute I mean with all the ticket sales they should help!!

The county of LA should have said " show me the money ". Leave it to the Jackson family to stiff someone else with the bills.

look how LA done MJ in court just alittle tribute to the way he was treated, and accused wrongfuly, MJ did not hurt children.

And OJ was innocent too.

Posted by: jack | Jul 9, 2009 9:53:34 PM

Hey Rose wake up and smell the roses, if he was so innocent why pay them off. This was a farce if i ever saw one, He was made to look better and more important than God. Let his fa,mily pay for this spectacle it was their idea to do it.

In view of California's economic status (they're totally broke), this 3-Ring Circus shouldn't have been allowed to take place. His family should be presented with the bill for all costs related to this debacle, which is what it really was. This is NOT the way to show respect for the dead. Maybe they should have hired Barnum & Bailey to handle the proceedings.

MJ was put in a golden casket...
The whole event cost more money than I'll probably see in my entire life.
Cali was left to pick up the tab.

This could've been avoided if they took a look at the history of payments and stuff, after all, MJ ended up owing a few hundred millions to a whole pile of people.
Cali should've put their foot down and demanded to be paid up-front.

The answer as to who should pick up the tab for the Jackson memorial service is REALLY obvious: It should be paid for with funds from Jackson's estate! Putting this burden on CA taxpayers is beyond ridiculous! The executors of Jackson's estate should be sent the bill, and if they don't pay the state should seize whatever they need to satisfy this debt!
