Brian Ross Reports: Madoff Arrives at NC Prison to Serve 150-Year Sentence
July 14, 2009 6:04 PM
Shackled in handcuffs and clad in a blue jumpsuit, Bernie Madoff arrived at his new home today -- the Butner Federal Correctional Complex in North Carolina. Madoff, 71, took a 34-hour trip by bus from New York with an overnight stop at a prison in Atlanta.
The Butner prison is a medium security facility where inmates start the day at 6am. They and are required to work for 7.5 hours making between 12 cents and 40 cents an hour. Dinner is served at 5pm and is followed by free-time where prisoners can participate in recreational or educational programs.
Among Madoff’s fellow inmates at the prison is The "Blind Sheik," Omar Abdel-Rahman, who was involved in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Others include New York mafia boss Carmine “The Snake” Persico, Israeli spy Jonathon Pollard and another convicted billionaire, John Rigas, who stole from the communications company he ran.
Brian Ross has covered Bernie Madoff and his ponzi scheme extensively for ABC News. CLICK HERE for his comprehensive reports. Brian is working on a book about Maddoff -- to see the first chapter CLICK HERE.
