North Korea's Beer Of Choice

July 03, 2009 11:33 AM

North Korea has aired an advertisement on state television for its locally brewed cool one ….Taedonggang beer.  Very unusual  as North Korean TV is usually filled with patriotic programming and North Korean movies, not commercials. As a seven time  visitor to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (the official name) I can honestly say that after a hard day of working with your North Korean minder  there is nothing like sitting back, putting your feet up, and sipping a cool Taedonggang…..so as they say in Pyongyang …..hey DPRK this Taedonggang is for you!

If the country never has commercials, and all of a sudden there is on promoting beer to ease stress, does it not strike you as odd? Perhaps it is Kim Jong's way of saying stressful times are coming-drink up!

Yes, television is state owned in North Korea. No telling what the beer is made from. A couple of years ago, famine became so bad that state TV was running spots on how nutritious eating grass is.

This is the only article on the World Newser, as I write this, that isn't about the USA except for a short piece about Saddam's last FBI interview.

Are we that myopic?

A quick glance at the BBC site shows articles about floods in China and Vietnam, Iranian clerics defying the election results, and a bomb hits Philippine Church-goers, among others.

Instead, we get stories on the intellectual level of China's beer and Obama likes Mike over Kobe.

What's next? Highly abbreviated articles so we won't have to think for more that 15 seconds?

The_Nick, that's because a genuine press no longer exists in the U.S. The American media have become nothing but a willing propaganda machine for the White House. They can used something like Michael Jackson's death and their prolonged coverage of it (even though not many people care) to smokescreen quite a number of news stories.

HAHAHA you're right the_Mick I just lookd at the world news section and it's all USA exept for the grainy black and white picture of a terrorist, looks more like an enhanced photo of the shroud of Turin.
HAHAHA and the travels even funnier.........all USA here in the UK we don't call it travel unless you actually leave the country.
