Should Taxpayers Share Cost of the Jackson Memorial?

July 06, 2009 9:57 AM

The memorial will cost the city of Los Angeles money.  There are the extra police, the shutting of roads and all of the logistics involved in pulling off this extremely high profile service at the Staples Center and nearby Nokia Theatre.  While no official dollar amount has been announced, LA councilwoman Jan Murray, speaking on Good Morning America, said she'd love for the Jackson family to help defray some of the costs to the city.

What kind of city logistics will this take to pull off?  According to the Associated Press, the LAPD is thinking in terms of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and the celebration following the LA Lakers recent championship.

why not pay for it, Jackson has done more for LA than all the illegals combined and LA likes to pay for ilegals

If california are so far in debt that teachers and law enforcement officers are losing their jobs or taking pay cuts, I dont see why they should ever fund a cent towards this.

The Nation of Islam, who are so deep in with the Jacksons, and also have a lot of money in their coffers, should fund it, as should any other celebrity who has ever been involved with Jackson.

ABSOLUTELY NOT - WHY SHOULD TAXPAYERS PAY FOR HIS FUNERAL????

Do you think that you would be covered when you are deceased?? If this is paid for by taxpayers - then it should cover ALL.

OK ENOUGH THIS MAN WAS NOT A GOD NOT A POLITICIAN HE DIDNT SAVE A LIFE HE IS NO HERO HE WAS A AD EXCUSE FOR A PERSON AND CALIFORNIA IS DROWNING IN DEBT!!!!!!!!!!!! LET THE JACKSONS PAY FOR ALL OF IT . THEY WANT THE SPECTACLE ITS A DISGRACE

Last Wednesday a true hero died in Boise, Idaho and not one word appeared in the national media. They were too busy glorifying a demented pedophile! Captain Ed W. Freeman, United States Army, distinguished himself by numerous acts of conspicuous gallantry and extraordinary intrepidity on
14 November 1965 while serving with Company A, 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). Why can't we celebrate people of this caliber instead of a plastic Michael Jackson?

Absolutely NOT. He was a drug user and a pedophile. Period. Better yet, let ABC and Good Morning America pay the expenses. Afterall, they've all been promoting, ad nauseum, Jackson's sainthood during the last week.

Everytime there is a funeral, the city and the police are involved in directing the traffic, whether it is one or two cops. The city is always involved. If it was your relative, none of you would would mind if the city stepped in. However, due to greed, selfishness, and hatred which you all are dispicting right now, that is what is speaking. Elvis died of drug abuse, not one negative word was spoken about that. I believe someone, simply put his Doctor, let Michael die while searching his house for money. When he returned to Michaels room, it was simply too late. Michael Jackson was murdered. Apparently he found the money and used it to hire a lawyer after he let Michael die. Michael was not not a drug addict.

Taxes pay for sports, ballet, and other frivolities. You pay for Octomom and illegal aliens. Why not Jackson’s funeral?

Sure he was rich enough to afford the price of his own funeral but we gave bonuses to rich executives, isn’t that the way the new America works? Tax working people and give it to the rich, the lazy, the law breakers and the just plain weird.

Jackson fit more than one of those categories so we should give him a little extra..

What is wrong with his family paying for this?? It's not our responsibility and I resent that this all you hear on the news. Drugs killed him and we should pay the price.

What about it being paid for by his estate or family????

Posted by: smt | Jul 6, 2009 11:24:34 AM

Why not cover the expenses for our soldiers that have served our country???? Not someone who was addicted to drugs and after children. He is not a hero.

Claudia, have you read the drugs he was taking and you say not a drug addicct. What is it then?

Posted by: smt | Jul 6, 2009 11:29:39 AM

Of course, taxpayers should not pay for the funeral. The Jacksons should foot the bill -whatever they are willing to pay for.

California is broke. They can't pay for this.

Claudia - how do you figure he was not a drug addict???? Look at the drugs he was taking, by 5 different doctors. Why should we cover his funeral expenses, this was self-inflicting.

Pay for the tru heroes of our country - the men and women serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. They are the true heroes.

ohh hell no, I have had enough of this worship, what about fallen troops? lost families, debt, unemployment, nahhh man here in America we worship, pedophiles and snobby sluty celebrities who care less about the fans, only the dollars they spend.
Public pay? "lol" Don't "WE" pay enough as it is?

Posted by: FreshMeatz | Jul 6, 2009 11:45:20 AM

Absolutely not.. The state of California is broke.. How can the state administration justify spending taxpayer monies for this act!! It's more of a spectacle which will be televised all over the world and TV channels will make money with all the commercial slots.. Why don't the TV channels and the Jacksons pay for this event....Since they're the ones who want it the most to be done this way?????

Posted by: g2b | Jul 6, 2009 11:56:34 AM

If California is going broke, how can LA afford to accommodate MJ's funeral? City and State are connected aren't they? Shouldn't the Govenor have something to say about the City spending money while the rest of the State goes broke?

Tax payers should be outraged by this. So he was a big star. If his family wants a public affair let them figure out how to pay the City back for providing its services.

Posted by: capflygirl | Jul 6, 2009 12:22:20 PM

Absolutely not, his estate has the money.
It was not the choice of many people to have a open ceremony. As talented as he was, many stars have died and not requested an eleborate funeral at the tax payers expense.

Posted by: Mariebeth | Jul 6, 2009 12:28:36 PM

Yes they should. Many peolple over the Jackson family including myself would like to mourn thru seeing a memorial. He was a true performer. Personal life aside, people loved and was inspired by him and his music. So people beside the close friends of the Jackson should be able to see a memorial service.

In my humble opinion, I don't believe the city should pay any of his funeral expenses. he was considered a private citizen (in the loose sense of the word)- not a head of state or dignitary - and as such, he or his family should be responsible for his final expenses. they should be billed for any costs associated with this, just as my estate/family would be.

Posted by: Mizsuvie | Jul 6, 2009 12:46:07 PM

Do to the current economic conditions, I think the city of Los Angeles should put a lien against the estate to cover the expenses for the funeral and memorial service. They might not have any expenses because both of these events will generate millions of dollars in revenue and taxes for the area and it should be treated like any event like a convention or super bowl.
