9-11 Mastermind: Coming To New York
November 13, 2009 9:54 AM
It’s a long-awaited and hugely controversial decision, ostensibly the judgment of the U.S. Justice Department but certainly reflecting the thinking of the White House. Ten high-profile prisoners at Guantanamo Bay are being transferred to face justice in the United States. Perhaps the two best-known – the self-described 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Ramzi Binalshibh, who allegedly helped train and the hijackers and get them to the United States – are to be tried in the Southern District of New York, in a courthouse that sits less than one mile from Ground Zero.
The Bush Administration always maintained that affording these people their day in court was not necessary, and carried unacceptable security risks. We’ll hear from Attorney General Eric Holder shortly – but it is already clear that the Obama Administration believes these men can and will be dealt with within the confines of the justice system. "I am absolutely convinced that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed will be subjected to the most exacting demands of justice," President Obama said in Japan today.
With this one decision, that Bush-era mindset is turned on its head.
More to come…

Yes let's bring him here but somewhere they should be made to jump without a parachute from the height some of the victims in the Twin Towers had to jump. That's justice

Isn't this typical American thinking, or lack thereof? Haven't heard the answers to the "what ifs" of a "not guilty" verdict!!! And, if found guilty how many citizens will have their taxes go to pay for cushy jail cells? And for how many years while things go through the appeals process??
Time to deal with these depraved persons!

I applaud the decision to try the terror suspects in NY. It's not without precedent to try terrorist in federal court. The attack on 9/11 was a crime not an act of war. The bombing of the military ship USS Cole was an attack on our military (act of war) therefore it belongs in military court.
Mr. Obama has shown that he is willing to put his political neck on the line and confront problems that are not popular. It seems that Democrats are the only ones willing to confront difficult pressing issues (health care, Guantanamo, climate change, equal pay, etc.) instead of the status quo. Republicans couldn't wait to put fear and panic in the debate, while ignoring the over 200 terrorism suspects that have been tried in the US, including shoe bomber Richard Reid who also tried to blow up a plane. When he was convicted in our justice system I didn't hear any Republican objections to it. Why can't the American people see through the propaganda, race baiting and fear mongering?

If bombing the World Trade Center and flying a plane full of people into the Pentagon wasn't an act of war why are we in Afghanistan fighting a war? Try them in a military court.
