Economy Depressed -- But College Presidents Making More?
November 02, 2009 1:46 PM
With the costs of college spiraling…there comes a headline about how much college presidents are making. 23 college presidents make more than a million dollars now. According to a survey from the Chronicle of Higher Education, despite the downtick in the economy (including all those parent’s college funds) the salaries for the big men and women on campus are up about 6% from last year. Interestingly, more American youth are attending college than ever before. But a growing number are attending more affordable community colleges.

Higher ed has become nothing more than another corrupt branch of government, and a "golden handshake," "retirement home" for politicians who have performed the most political favors for the "retirement home" of their choosing, guaranteeing the corrupt, palm-greased politician a nice, cushy six-figure administrative position when they tire of being an elected official.
This practice should be prohibited under Federal law. No more lobbyists, no more free healthcare and other such political perks for politicians, and definitely no more former politicians in higher ed administrative positions.

In today's economy, just maintaining your current pay scale has got to be worth 6%... bargains and sales for nearly every product needed and real estate investments for pennies on the dollar... so a 6% raise is equal to a 12% increase. Please people, we’re already bleeding.

I agree.... No more lobbyist, or politicans who take money and gifts from special interests groups. Like insurance companies, NRA, the Tobacco industry and such. Politicans should be ashamed of them selves. They were voted in to do good for the people who voted for them. Any politicans who sell their voted to the highest bidder should be fired and never allowed to serve again. As for those college presidents. Do they deserve to be in that position? Is that a job they are qualified for or were they given the job as a favour! And just who are teaching our kids? Are they people with the credentials and work experience. Or are they just graduated themselves from college or in their final year. As long as you have a diploma from an acredited college it may look good. But have you ever tried to have a conversation with some of these people. Scary!!!! No common sense at all, no real life experience at all. America we need to do better by our children. Stop all these rip off artists out there. They are stealing from America, stealing from your future and your children's future. I wonder if we could find out just how many politicans are taking gifts from these so called lobbyists.
America stop worring about who's sleeping with who. That's not our business. That's between them and their spouse. What is our business is who's giving them the money to spend. Is it the tax payer money? Or are they selling their vote to the highest bidder, knowing full well that if the people that voted them into office knew that they were being used they would be fired instantly... Let's get real wages for doing the job you are qualified for. Not for some outlandish BS position that you are not qualified for.

Hold on everybody. Your sweeping generalizations are just that.
There are many high qualified men and
women heading up colleges and major universites, who have not served any
time in politics. They are the good guys; the ones who are not enjoying the college 'high life' just because they
were lobbyists or retired politicians.
We need these people to lead our institutions of higher learning and they
deserve every penny of their hard-earned
salaries. A good example is
President Sargent of Suffolk Universirty
in Boston, devoted to the university for
decades and as president for 20 years.
He has given over a million dollars to
Suffolk over the years and just received
a vote of confidence from the board of
trustees. Therefor, try not to equate
all university presidents to the entitled ones from Washington.

Carol, you are right on point! The UMass system is a classic example from Bulger to Meehan, and all they are doing is building a second state-funded (translation: taxpayer funded) pension on a job they got through cronyism and old-boy politics.

What did you expect? Now we have liberal college presidents living the high life on ARRA NIH university stimulus money, your hard-earned tax dollars while over 10 % of taxpayers are unemployed . When awarded 50 % of ARRA grant money goes to the universities as indirect costs -- that is correct! 50 % of the money does not go to the actual science beaker ready work -- but goes to the university. In this case, 5 billion dollars of your American Research Reinvestment stimulus money went to over-payed University President liberals making over 1 million dollars a year.
