Tragedy at Fort Hood -- 13 Dead, Details on the Shooting
November 05, 2009 5:11 PM
Moments ago at the gates of Fort Hood in Texas Lt. General Bob Cone briefed on the latest details:
“We’ve had a terrible tragedy here at ft. Hood today. The situation is ongoing although I think we have positive news that we’re very close to a resolution.
At approximately 1330 hours today, a soldier entered what we call the “soldier readiness facility” where soldiers who are preparing to deploy go for last minute medical check-ups and dental treatment…
Shooter opened fired and essentially due to the quick response of the police forces was killed.
The shooter was killed. He was a soldier. We since then have apprehended two additional soldiers 6 that are suspects.
The challenge that we face now is that the installation is locked down and in many cases a lot of our facilities, a lot of our families, children are locked in facilities.
It is locked down right now and we will air on the side of caution in terms of making sure that the situation is stabilized.
The individuals involved were U.S. soldiers.
It’s a terrible tragedy. It’s stunning. And as I say, as I’ve gone around to the hospital here, as I’ve been at the scene, soldiers and family members and many of the great civilians that work here are devastated.”

NOW WHO ARE THESE MEN!
Posted by: kritikit | Nov 5, 2009 5:19:14 PM
-or just homegrown terrorists-
Clues were missed or dismissed.
I'm sorry to hear this.
God help these families.

Ummm, didn't he mean they will ERR on the side of caution"?

Now that the other two suspects have been released, the question in my mind is how did one man with two handguns surrounded by battle hardened troops cause this much carnage without being taken down within seconds.
Also, I have noticed on some message boards a cry for Muslims to be removed from the military. Was this officer a Muslim? It has been reported that he was scheduled to be deployed. How many tours in war zones had he done and where there any known psychological problems from those deployments?

Why Charles Gibson has to mention first thing in the news that the guy who shot was muslim? Ofcourse we all know Maj. Nidal Hasan was muslim by his name but not to forget he was Soldier as well, May be little frustrated. Charles you are suxs

Sid, the guy could be Hindu for all I know, and a name does not necessarily denote one's religion or beliefs.
For all you know he could be a Scientologist or a Wiccan.
You are however, spot on regarding reporters jumping to conclusions without verification.

Charlie,
I know you guys are working on tight deadlines, but I was disappointed that you identified the Fort Hood shooter as a Muslim when we don't know if his religion had anything to do with this tragedy. We are not at war with Islam, remember. For the record, I'm a Christian.
Posted by: JB | Nov 5, 2009 7:01:41 PM
I agree with Tom. Why did that need to be the first thing Charlie said? When was the last time we heard about a shooting "by a Christian?" Let's pressure ABC -- and all news organizations -- to stop being biased. We deserve real journalism, not circumspect, hype and fear.

Yeah JB let's coddle the whole bunch.
Posted by: Brian | Nov 5, 2009 7:48:08 PM
I'm very disappointed in Charlie Gibson for asking if the shooter was Muslim. What does that have to do with anything? I thought World News was better than that. That question was stupid and held no weight in the tragedy of this event. If the shooter did not have that name, his religion would never have been mentioned.

How soon so many Americans forget how people of certain heritage who attacked America were all put in camps during WW II, be thankful every Arab, Muslim, person of brown skin such as India decedents, etc. not have to go through what the Japanese and Germans did during the Great War. Today the ones walking free did take 13 American Soldiers lives and injured 31 American Soldiers. How dare anyone criticize Mr. Charles Gibson, but you see that is our right here in America, as long as you are a legal citizen. However, how many are not legal citizens? Shame on the ones not born here in our country, who are so ignorant to walk our streets, who do not realize that they are lucky to be living in a FREE Country like ours today rather legal or not legal. We tolerate way too much in this Free Country of ours. It could be WW II all over again if much more happens with Arabs or Muslims flying planes into towers and killing thousands of not just Americans, but many individuals from a variety of countries worldwide.

In all seriousness- what relevancy could his religion possibly have? And assuming he was muslim- what would it matter if he converted or was born into Islam? The ignorance and generalizations by journalists as respected as Gibson and Ross is depressing. How often did we hear about Timothy Mcveigh's religion? Or Ted Kaczynski's? we didn't- because it wasn't relevant, and didnt fit neatly into predetermined newsworthy stereotypes. Was it a priority to reveal the religious backgrounds of Charles Manson? or Ted Bundy?- Of course not. Why? because christian and jewish killers don't have the same catchy ring as “muslim terrorist”. The truth is, when someone with an Arab or "muslim sounding name" is connected with a violent act- we make damn sure to let everyone that this murder was by a muslim. We probably won't even remember his/her name, but we'll remember they were muslim.

The words "Islam" and "muslim" have become synonymous with murder, violence, and terrorism. Granted- these are due mostly to acts of catastrophic terrorism- by fanatical groups cloaking their acts in their religion. But when David Coresh killed federal officers should that have been an indictment on all people who believed in Jesus Christ as the personal Lord and Savior? Of course not. What about the massacre at Jonestown by Jim Jones? The same answer. But you get an Islamic fanatic- well that's just something all together different isn't it? Now I guess every murder by every muslim is in someway somehow connected- and a symptom of something inherently wrong and violent about the common denominator- islam. As ridiculous as that may sound to some, its the gospel to many, especially now in Ft. Drum Texas I wager.

As ridiculous as that may sound to some, its the gospel to many, especially now in Ft. Drum Texas I wager. Ask yourself-should the media, the supposed "bastions of truth and objectivity", contribute to the demonization of an entire religion and culture? Are they helping by feeding that perception and stereotype- like Gibson did this evening? ABC News: If your aim is to further alienate muslim communities in the US and their youth specifically- you are doing one heck of a job. My sincerest condolescences to all of the families who are suffering tonight because of the unjustifiable acts of a MURDERER - plain and simple.
Posted by: Alex | Nov 6, 2009 12:16:52 AM
It is not how did they do this but why? The answer is simple because the American people are the most trusting nation in the world. We let these idiots come in this country and that is why we are being slaughtered a few at a time.I am a Mother who is sick and tired of these Muslims thinking they can use our resources then shoot us in the back. Sorry I am not so stupid. All Mothers need to unite. We took stands in the past and won. Why not now? GET THESE IDIOTS OUT OF OUR COUNTRY! I am a born and bred United States citizen and I have rights! I say they go.
Posted by: Donna Wilson | Nov 6, 2009 7:29:45 AM
I forgot to mention I am not a rascist but I also am not an idiot. They are counting on the people of the United States to use our constitution to allow them to do their evil stuff here in this country , so if anyone out there believes that these so-called born again citizens are here for our benefit well, believe me you have not been around at all. The Japanese said we were a stupid nation and they weren,t just kidding. We roll over and say kick me , especially after 911 because we believe people of all races should have rights. My Daddy always told me you have to earn rights and trust and I don,t believe some Middle Easterners have earned our trust. WHEN AND IF THEY DO THIS THEN I WILL GIVE THEM THE BENEFIT OF A DOUBT UNTIL THEN I AM GOING TO BE SUSPICIOUS OF ANY OF YOU.
Posted by: Donna Wilson | Nov 6, 2009 7:41:27 AM
@ Donna Wilson: For your information ma'am- Major Hason was born in Virginia-not exactly a "born again citizen". I hate to break this to you, but not everybody with a "foreign sounding name" was born outside the U.S. Just some food for thought. Eat up.

Those who do not have military experience, are obviously not aware that military personnel, do not necessarily have weapons and live ammunition with them, when not in a combat area.
The assailant brought his own weapons and own ammunition, for this attack. it was clearly preplanned, and premeditated.
It is equally clear, that this individual's religion, probably played a role in this action, more than his psychological condition.
