President Obama: Federal Government 'Will Go Bankrupt' if Health Care Costs Are Not Reined In
December 16, 2009 3:01 PM
ABC's Karen Travers reports from Washington:
President Obama told ABC News’ Charles Gibson in an interview that if Congress does not pass health care legislation that will bring down costs, the federal government “will go bankrupt.”
The president laid out a dire scenario of what will happen if his health care reform effort fails.
“If we don't pass it, here's the guarantee….your premiums will go up, your employers are going to load up more costs on you,” he said. “Potentially they're going to drop your coverage, because they just can't afford an increase of 25 percent, 30 percent in terms of the costs of providing health care to employees each and every year. “
The president said that the costs of Medicare and Medicaid are on an “unsustainable” trajectory and if there is no action taken to bring them down, “the federal government will go bankrupt.”
“This actually provides us the best chance of starting to bend the cost curve on the government expenditures in Medicare and Medicaid,” Obama said.
Watch Charlie Gibson’s interview with President Obama tonight on World News and check back on ABCNews.com for the full interview.
Obama told Gibson that anybody who says they are concerned about the rising deficit or worried about tax increases in the future has to support this health care bill.
“Because if we don't do this, nobody argues with the fact that health care costs are going to consume the entire federal budget,” the president said.
Obama is facing an increasingly skeptical American public when it comes to his push for health care reform.
The latest ABC News/Washington Post poll found that support for the health care reform package, while never robust, is now at a low ebb and opposition has been steadily growing stronger in intensity.
For the first time, a majority of those surveyed disapproved of the president’s work on health care (53 percent) and oppose the health care reform package making its way through Congress (51 percent, compared to 44 percent approval).
That seven-point margin for opposition is its most to date -- indeed statistically significant for the first time -- and the differential in intensity of sentiment has grown since September.

And if the "stimulus" package wasn't passed Obama said we'll see 8% unemployment. It passed and we're well past his uneducated promise of 8% unemployment. If health care reform doesn't pass by New Years' Day, the world will end. Sorry, B.O., we're not buying your schtick anymore.

I am so tired of the same ole politics. The republicans have made so many road blocks and refuse to work together that people begin to sour on healthcare reform. Sour? You shouldn't sour - you should get mad! Angry! When is this country going to be able to resolve anything when all they do in Washington is play politics and all to their own ends... never caring what the American people need or think! We should be
on the lawns of the capital demanding our senators and congress pass a comprehensive healthcare package by end of January - Stop the politics - Do what is right for the people!

"The president said that the costs of Medicare and Medicaid are on an “unsustainable” trajectory"
And Obama is undeniably right on that. Republicans completely destroyed any remaining "conservative" credentials they had when they made the craven political decision to attack all efforts to reign in Medicare as 'killing old people' to scare up the elderly vote in 2010. They even went on the record en masse as defending the unsustainable Medicare budget down to the very last dime, insisting there wasn't a cent of savings to be had to help reform health care.

Once again, and I have said it so many times it is starting to run together, this legislation is not about health care, it is about health INSURANCE! If we were actually trying to bring down the cost of health care, then most people would be behind it. All we are doing is creating a massive bureaucracy which will layered on top of the current failing insurance system, providing an increased burden to everyone involved. The underlying costs of the care itself are not addressed anywhere in this massive, unconstitutional package. I do not even want to address the outright BS statement guaranteeing our rising costs and the bankruptcy of the nation. I suppose the trillions that he wants to take on credit will not add anything to the problem. I am so fed up with this nonsense.

Talk about scare tatics, being used and Obama is the one who is using them. Your Insurance rates will go up if this bill is passed, and you will have less say because of the government interference.

Obama is correct here. Of course you do not need a fully functioning brain to state the obvious. Does anybody really believe we will not go bankrupt for this and other reasons. Social security, medicaid, medicare, budget deficits, trade deficits, leadership corruption, individual debt, the toxicity of the Federal Reserves books, etc. We live in very interesting times.

It appears if global warming is man made the only place the gas is coming from is the White House and Congress.
However like Global warming everything they say is a false.
Both party's are broke alright morally.
For the simple minded folks not serving us in Washington. I said liar liar pants on fire.

Neither Obama or his team EVER "promised" 8% unemployment. You are lying. Provide the quote, let us google it up if you aren't lying. Find where he promised 8% unemployment without at least a half page of discussion about uncertain and error in making any predictions.
Where is quote of Obama "promising?" Why do you have to exaggerate and lie to support your opinion?

I can't believe anyone would take seriously ANYTHING this "man" has to say. Everything out of his mouth is a lie or exaggeration.

"If we don't pass it, here's the guarantee….your premiums will go up, your employers are going to load up more costs on you,” he said. “Potentially they're going to drop your coverage" - Ok, so who's using scare tatics Mr President? Let's also say this the way it is...this is not about what's best for Americans, this is what will look the best for the President. Even Soros is making that claim with his question to Howard "I have a scream" Dean - "The President's poll numbers at new lows. And a lot of leading Democrats believe that if this bill goes down, it will cripple the Obama presidency. Are you prepared to do that?"

OMW...I cant believe he expects us to believe anything he says. This man does not come close to knowing what he is talking about. Scare tactics is right. I think he intends to bankrupt taxpayers. His ratings are dropping like mad and he has the nerve to tell us this kinda bs! He and his buddies are only making it worse for the American people. Do they not understand what majority of the people is. WE dont want this package. I guess the American people dont count, oh but we knew that would happen with a socialist president
Posted by: SOnoni | Dec 16, 2009 3:33:30 PM
This president is worse than a used car salesman on steriods. Also hypocritical.
Recall that this is the same scare-monger who severely chastises others at eevery opportunity for what he views to be "scare" tactics that are offered to support arguments against his policies.
And now, listen to him himself shout out a big "boo" to support his own Obamascare health destruction reforms, just as he has done for any and all of his other "the-world-will-end" demands for ramming through his agenda:
"President Obama told ABC News’ Charles Gibson in an interview that if Congress does not pass health care legislation that will bring down costs, the federal government 'will go bankrupt.' ”
"The president laid out a dire scenario of what will happen if his health care reform effort fails."
Wow! Since when did the president have a smidgen of the tiniest bit of concern about America going bankrupt?
A non-stimulus bill that increased jobs losses to force unemployment to double-digits didn't faze him. A pork-busting budget bill earlier this year failed to faze him. Another pork-busting budget bill now on his desk to sign doesn't faze him in the least. Ratcheting up defict spending to new record levels every few months or so gives him no reason to pause with his wild spending, no more than shoveling many hundreds of billions in American taxpayer dollars to pay off climate change cultists who are lobbying as middlemen for a cut of the president's payback promoting world-wide wealth redistribution.
Scare tactics from the original scare-monger-in-chief. Same tired old game.
America deserves to have a lot better than a one trick scaremonger for POTS.

The federal government declared bankruptcy in 1933. There is no money. All money currently circulating is debt notes. You can't even redeem the "tender" for gold or silver, which was the whole purpose of the paper currency in the first place. It is a debt note that used to be able to be redeemed by a real valuable commodity. Now your money is completely worthless. Not only is the government broke, but so are you. And you have been for nearly 80 years.
Adding more unfunded mandates WILL bankrupt the states, kill employment, and whatever is left over will be taken in fees and taxes to pay for the additional MANDATED services. You are being delivered to the international banking cartel on a plate. And you cheer your enslaver, wether it's name be Bush, or Obama. Hell our national parks have already been turned over to the United Nations. Just look up the "world heritage sites", or "biosphere preserves" owned by the United Nations.
Come on folks, this is in broad daylight, they aren't even hiding it, you just need to open your eyes!

100% correct, but unfortunately the dems want one extrem the conservatives want the other extreme and nobody gives a rats ass about the middle class who in the ned will end up paying for it all
I say buy guns and start shooting politicians for sport

Gee Barack, you lie so badly! There is not a single cost saving measure that is enforcable in the entire bill.
The big money was in PHRMA and you dropped to your knees and blew them on day 1.
Hope you and yours get sick far from help...its what you wish for us!
Posted by: madmatt | Dec 16, 2009 3:39:07 PM
OBAMA YOU LIE!!! The costs have accelerated in direct proportion to the amount of government involvement in health care. Raising taxes and then saying health care costs are reduced is just a outright lie. Do people really think you can add 25M people and reduce costs?
Posted by: brian | Dec 16, 2009 3:39:30 PM
Enough of all the back & forth. If this bill passes the way it is now, what is anyone really getting? The same or higher premiums, a mandate on buying health insurance which people can't afford now, and 3X the premium amounts for people with pre-existing conditions! And are the people deciding this HCR in Washington worried about it? No, they have their health insurance and the salaries to be able to pay for it!
