As Promised, This Week Moved!
April 20, 2008 12:39 PM
A few hours ago, we finished our first broadcast of "This Week" from the Newseum.
This blogger doesn't have much to say since working for a Sunday morning show requires some early hours, but we want to know what you think of the new location, this morning's interview with Senator John McCain, and the Classic Roundtable.

This Week Moves to the Newseum Tomorrow
April 19, 2008 7:44 PM
It's finally time! After months of preparation, "This Week" is moving to the Newseum.
Tomorrow's premiere broadcast guest is Senator John McCain. We also have a "Classic Roundtable" with Sam Donaldson, Cokie Roberts and George Will.
On Friday, we held a rehearsal from our new set overlooking the U.S. Capitol. George Stephanopoulos and George Will were there, and I had the privilege of standing in for Cokie Roberts alongside my colleague Matt Jaffe, who played Sam Donaldson.
The picture on the left provides a sneak peak of our new view. It's a screen grab from our practice roundtable. We're all listening intently as Sam's stand-in Matt discusses Barack Obama.
Tune in tomorrow for the real thing!

This Week Moves to the Newseum April 20th
April 11, 2008 3:39 PM
On Sunday, April 20, "This Week" will be leaving behind our home at the ABC News Washington Bureau for a new studio at the Newseum on Pennsylvania Avenue. We've been anticipating the move for months. As we head into our final broadcast from the bureau, I spoke with my boss, "This Week" Executive Producer Kathy O'Hearn, about the new location and new look.
How would you describe the show's new Sunday home?
Our new home at the Newseum is a glass-enclosed studio with a spectacular view. It places "This Week" in the very heart of the nation's capital, overlooking the actual U.S. Capitol building.
How will the new location change the program?
Our hope is the new location will infuse the show with the vibrant energy of a living place. The Newseum will be filled with visitors while we are on the air, and that can't help but charge the atmosphere with a sense of vitality.
We will be offering tours of both the control room and the studio as we broadcast, making the show into an interactive experience and, we hope, more accessible to the viewer.
What inspired the new look of the show?
Our new graphic look was very much inspired by the building and the studio. The graphics carry the strong lines of the building, but have a translucent depth.
They maintain the show's graphic legacy of red, white and blue, but with a modern, fresh twist.
How has the show been preparing for the move?
We’ve been preparing for over a year, starting with meetings while the building was still under construction. Early on, our Vice President Roger Goodman met with the Disney Imagineers to create a unique optic system that allows us to shoot in the glass-enclosed studio despite the rising morning sun. It's pretty amazing.
For the past few months, we have been building the set, lighting the studio, rehearsing, and programming and prepping the control room. Because this is the first Sunday talk show to go hi-def, the staff has also been in HD training sessions. And, staff members traveled to New York to observe the work-flow of Good Morning America, which is already broadcast in HD.
What do you think of the Newseum as a museum dedicated to journalism?
The Newseum is an inspiring and fun testament to the power of journalism in a free society. It highlights the importance of an informed electorate, which is really what we are all about, too -- informing our viewers on governance and public policy. It's a great addition to Pennsylvania Avenue, and to the city -- and I look forward to working here!

Daily Roundtable: McCain Shops for No. 2
April 03, 2008 12:19 PM
McCain started talking veepstakes, saying he has a list of about 20 possible running mates. The GOP nominee-to-be also said he hopes to pick early and have his choice settled prior to the Republican convention in early September.
You can read Bret Hovell's report by clicking here.
And watch McCain's remarks by clicking here.
Who do you think McCain will pick as his VP? And who do you think McCain should pick? What combination presents the strongest ticket for the GOP? What should McCain's strategy be in selecting his running mate? Talk about it in today's Daily Roundtable discussion.

Meet This Week: Ray Baker, Intern
April 02, 2008 2:45 PM
Meet "This Week's" Ray Baker, intern extraordinaire. Ray is a senior at Howard University with an affinity for politics and sports. At "This Week," Ray helps with the Sunday Funnies, show production, research, and pretty much everything else.
How did you first get interested in media?
I first got interested in media as a high school student. I won a speech contest that a local news station was sponsoring. It was about then when I found out I could make a career out of talking. When I got to college I learned that, although I can have a career in talking, I really need to be informed and be sure I'm speaking truth. Otherwise it becomes what the Egyptians called "tef tef."
What is something you've learned during your internship that you never thought you'd learn?
Something I learned that I never thought I'd learn was about the business of television. There is so much preparation that goes into making sure everything looks right. I had no idea how much preparation was needed to make sure television looks flawless and effortless to the viewers.
What are the best and worst things about your internship?
I think my professors would want me to give an academic answer as to what the best thing about the internship is, but truthfully the best thing about this job is Donna Brazile. She's great and it really has nothing to with her political views. She's just a brilliant, hilarious, down to earth woman. So I'd have to go with Donna Brazile and the scrambled eggs on Sunday Morning come in a very close second.
The worst thing about the job is working weekends. We have to be here pretty early Sunday morning and I'm still a college guy at heart so I'm used to hanging out and partying with my friends on the weekends. But since I've been interning here I have had to stop that.
Who are your favorite television personalities?
My favorite television personalities are lesser known but do really good and substantial work. One guy is named Jeff Johnson. He does some work for BET. Another guy I like is Ed Gordon. Obviously I'm a fan of George. Working with him I get to see first hand how talented and informed he is about political issues and social issues of the day.
What do you plan to do after graduation?
After graduation I plan to work in either community or political organizing. I have some opportunities looming that look promising so I am excited about that. Over the summer though I will be working at a summer camp I've been working at for the last three years. Those kids are important to me so rather than jump right into my career, I'd like to have one last summer where I can give something back to those kids.
If you have any questions for Ray Baker, post them in the comments section and he'll respond.
