This Week Moves to the Newseum April 20th

April 11, 2008 3:39 PM

On Sunday, April 20, "This Week" will be leaving behind our home at the ABC News Washington Bureau for a new studio at the Newseum on Pennsylvania Avenue. We've been anticipating the move for months. As we head into our final broadcast from the bureau, I spoke with my boss, "This Week" Executive Producer Kathy O'Hearn, about the new location and new look.

Newseum_exterior How would you describe the show's new Sunday home?

Our new home at the Newseum is a glass-enclosed studio with a spectacular view. It places "This Week" in the very heart of the nation's capital, overlooking the actual U.S. Capitol building.

How will the new location change the program?

Our hope is the new location will infuse the show with the vibrant energy of a living place. The Newseum will be filled with visitors while we are on the air, and that can't help but charge the atmosphere with a sense of vitality.

We will be offering tours of both the control room and the studio as we broadcast, making the show into an interactive experience and, we hope, more accessible to the viewer.

What inspired the new look of the show?

Our new graphic look was very much inspired by the building and the studio. The graphics carry the strong lines of the building, but have a translucent depth.

They maintain the show's graphic legacy of red, white and blue, but with a modern, fresh twist.

How has the show been preparing for the move?

We’ve been preparing for over a year, starting with meetings while the building was still under construction. Early on, our Vice President Roger Goodman met with the Disney Imagineers to create a unique optic system that allows us to shoot in the glass-enclosed studio despite the rising morning sun. It's pretty amazing.

For the past few months, we have been building the set, lighting the studio, rehearsing, and programming and prepping the control room.  Because this is the first Sunday talk show to go hi-def, the staff has also been in HD training sessions. And, staff members traveled to New York to observe the work-flow of Good Morning America, which is already broadcast in HD.

What do you think of the Newseum as a museum dedicated to journalism?

The Newseum is an inspiring and fun testament to the power of journalism in a free society. It highlights the importance of an informed electorate, which is really what we are all about, too -- informing our viewers on governance and public policy. It's a great addition to Pennsylvania Avenue, and to the city -- and I look forward to working here!

Just watching this weeks show on TV. And I cannot believe that the National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley talked about the problem in NEPAL when he meant to say TIBET! Not once, not twice but all through the interview he spoke about NEPAL! And the sad part is that neither George nor the panel appeared to notice this monumental gaffe!

Posted by: deepak | Apr 13, 2008 10:50:53 AM

did Hadley just confuse Nepal with Tibet? Why didn't George correct him?

Posted by: betsy | Apr 13, 2008 10:53:55 AM

I was surprised and disappointed that GS didn't call Hadley on his repeated references to Nepal when he was speaking about Tibet....one time could be overlooked as a slip of the tongue...but he said it over and over again....scary to think maybe Hadley doesn't know the difference between the two and GS didn't have the guts to point out his ignorance.

Faabulous! I'm looking forward to the new venue. I had hoped to visit the Newseum when I was in DC last year, but it hadn't yet opened.

I have a suggestion to improve the format of the Round Table. Each week, one invited guest should be a political reporter from a different state. The states could be rotated either by alphabetical order or date of entry into the Union. If you're on air 50 weeks of the year, all states would be covered.

It would be great to get a perspective on each week's news stories from someone familiar with how their state views the news.

George,

When will you discuss ISSUES like TORTURE BEING PLANNED IN THE WHITE HOUSE, the WAR in IRAQ, MCCAIN NOT SIGNING THE GI BILL that benefited every GI in previous wars.

Stop being like a RUPERT MURDOCH PUPPET and be a real reporter and interviewer who gives more than two hoots about the good of this country instead of being concerned about your own ratings.

Thank you.

George,

I was totally disappointed in your role at the debate. I thought you would concentrate on the issues instead you chose to attack Senator Obama with questions from a right wing Obama hater Sean Hamminity. I have enjoyed your show for years and I thought you were a fair and above board journalist. What you displayed at the debate was down right dirty and I am totally disappointed!

"The Newseum is an inspiring and fun testament to the power of journalism in a free society. It highlights the importance of an informed electorate, which is really what we are all about, too -- informing our viewers on governance and public policy."

If indeed you think your job is to help inform the electorate, you did a miserable job tonite on the Obama/Clinton "debate."

What a disgusting spectacle of inane and irrelevant questions. You should be ashamed!

Sounds like a classy new building. Too bad the classless Mr.Stephanopoulos has to continue in the new venue.
Tonight's debate was the worst display of "journalism" I've ever seen (and I've been on this earth for 47 years).
ABC viewers and undecided voters were held hostage by a political hack with a blatent conflict of interest with one of the candidates who asked repeated questions about flag lapel pins and 70 year old ex-radicals.
Meanwhile, not that well off George and Charlie would understand or care, average Americans can't buy gas to get to work, can't find a job anyway, can't afford the spiraling cost of food, can't afford to get sick without health insurance and on and on.
But no questions of any substance FOR THE FIRST FULL HOUR! George, how do I put this gently? Go to hell.

I will never watch another broadcast in which you are moderator or one of the participants. As a retired high school teacher I can tell you that the low level of American political discourse is because of media hacks like you. You are a disgrace. Ira Shelton, Seattle, WA.

Why don't you come clean about giving HRC the list of questions you were going to ask last night.

It's the closest I've seen to a public lynching... But, I know you'll never post this...

George needs his questions dictated to him by Sean Hannity. So ABC is the new Fox channel?

Posted by: Karen | Apr 17, 2008 9:45:10 PM

First let me say I have watched ABC News my entire teenage and adult life. I first fell in love with this network when you hired the late Max Robinson. Then you put Carol Simpson on the air. When i serverd in Vietnam I met the late great Peter Jennings. The best of all times. What a legacy you had. I was on my way to respect and admire George Stephanoulas and if I misspelled his name I apologize. As well as Charlie Gibson. But what took place at that debate was terrible. With all the issues facing this country today our kids dying in a war, struggling families trying to buy food, gas pay their mortages. save their jobs if they can check the headlines today more layoffs etc. You spent time asking about nonsense. Both Senator Clinton and Senator Obama are United States Senators that sit on Armed Services and Foreign Relation committee's they have TOP SECRET CLEARANCES. They have been investigated by The FBI and other government agencies. To ask a question about some relationship with a former member of The Weather Underground if he had one would not the FBI know about it. Think about that a minute. How we he have ever got a TOP SECRET clearance they do not give them away. Asking Senator Clinton about something she went throughten years ago and she has explained in nausim makes no sense either. I will never again watch This Week or any other ABC News Program. You ahve just lost a 36 year viewer. Shame on you for wasting the American people's time.

The debate questions were both inane and insufferable. Just like George. Who pays you? ABC? HillaryIs44? Sean? No, wait, you have the same network as Sean.

The debate was pathetic, at a time when people are genuinely, seriously concerned about the nation and its future. And an *$$ like you asks about FLAG PINS? and a retired preacher? And you defend your questions and important? Methinks you have lost touch (if you ever had it) of what is happening in this country. You need to be canned from the show, go back to her campaign, or head out to the real America. Shame on you.

Just a note... I used to make it a point to watch this week with george whatever and world news... but no more after the LAME "access hollywood" style debate moderated by george and charles. Especially after hearing the recording of george taking notes from sean hanity... where's the leadership, where are the serious questions about real problems???

Be sure to look for the ratings drop...

regards, steve in mission

You, at the Newseum George? After your performance at the Clinton-Obama debate you should be put on permanent display in the Newseum's Hall of Shame, as an example to future generations of shoddy journalism and pathetic reporters.

I hope ABC fires you.

You're ugly George, and you look like an idiot!

I was just the interview with Sen John McCain and totally appalled that he is still in the race since he believes to continue Bush's ideas and objectives. Decreasing military cost, increasing taxes will only make this place a more problematic country than it ever has been. The rich can afford these taxes, but what about people who are disabled and retired from the military who have to live on a minimum income. I can not even afford to drive my vehicle out of the driveway unless I have to take me or my wife to the doctors. Food is another thing. I am now only able to afford about helf the food I used to buy about two years ago. And my wife is a diabetic and has to live on a certain diet. Do these politician care? Not in the least. What about all these soldiers just coming back who are getting maltreatment in the VA facilities like Washington DC and Dallas. This country has become a total disgrace to its people and other countries. If you do not have a very high income income you are nobody and I feel this country is just as responsble for committing genocide as Iraq is because of its maltreatment to its seniors and people are incapable of providing the proper care to its people. You want changes, cut off all welfare to people who are healthy enough to work, whether its McDonalds or Wall Street and make them keep the job with a tracer done at least once a month. Cut federal taxes down to about 10-15% versus 20% and above and give the lower paid people a chance to make something of themselves. I being a retired disabled veteran am totally ashamed of my country and how bad people like Pres. Bush, who has never seen active wartime, and McCain who even being a former POW, puts the veterans and this country to shame for wanting to cut military cost at all. Just because he is officer doesn't mean he is any better than any enlisted man who served their country.

LAST WEEK'S DEMOCRAT DEBATE
As is clear from Aussie actor Mel's rantings, the Gibson clan tends toward racism. Good ol' boy Charlie confirmed this tendency as the obscenely immoderate moderator of the Dem debate. But hey, that's ABC's schtik! JON

I thoroughly enjoyed watching your your show today! I did not think that HD would make big of a difference to a NEWS program but I came away a amazed!

The HD detail allows us to clearly see the expressions of the speakers, which adds a whole new dimension to the discussion. There is more truth in the face than in the words!

Thank you for this! It is truly a great pleasure. And your NEWSEUM studio is really great also!

Peter.

Two thoughts on the debate: (1) If you're going to take a tabloid approach, kindly do so in a balanced way so that viewers don't walk away thinking one candidate has more tabloid-baggage than the other; (2) If you're interested in giving Americans something to think about in regard to character, please ask questions that bear on character.

One more thought: Those in our society who lean toward racism must have had treat when watching that debate.

I'm an independent and am NOT a supporter of Barrack Obama (or Hillary Clinton) yet I am one of the millions who believe you did an horrific job moderating the debate.

And yet you chose 3 ABC News employees for the round-table this week, none of whom were (for obvious, if differing reasons) willing or able to offer any criticism of it.

You all but admitted it was one of the major news stories this week by addressing it at the round table, but didn't have the sense to put up an opposing point of view?

All of your guests as well as the hosted stated or intimated that Barrack Obama supporters were the ones complaining about the format when that is utterly untrue. Just this morning on Meet the Press, even Ed Rendell, Clinton's most vociferous supporters, agreed that the first hour of the debate was pointless fluff.

I am not one of those cynics who believe it was an effort to help Hillary in polls and who would complain about the "appearance of impropriety" having George Stepenopholous moderate. I've watched his show enough to know that is an unfair attack.

I AM however, one of those cynics who thinks it was about ratings. And that, I think, bothers me even more. The commercialization of this debate - whether in the form of sensationalism or in the form of disruptive advertising - was its most alarming feature.

I only hope it shines a spotlight on the problem with Television News - particularly taken in tandem with the diminishing circulation and corporate control of paper news. Like most, I gather much of my news from the internet, but clearly that medium has a lot of maturing to do before people learn how to use it as a responsible non-partisan outlet for current truthful information.

So back to this morning's show... Why no dissenting point on the round table? Who made the booking decisions? Was the idea of actually debating ABC's handling of the debate considered verboten by corporate or did G.S. simply not have the courage (or arguments) to defend himself against the genuine non-Obamamaniacal criticisms?

Not because I think he actually should have asked them, but if George thought it was fair ground and really important to voters, he should asked McCain the following (for consistency's sake):

1. Why did he not ask McCain why he was NOT wearing a flag pin??

2. If George Steph. thinks these symbolic issues are really worth discussing, why didn't he push McCain a little harder on Hagee and ask why he wasn't holding himself to the same standard he set for Obama just a few minutes before?

3. Why didn't he ask McCain about his wife's tax records not being released?

4. Why did he spend 2/3 to 3/4 of his time asking him about substantive issues like taxes, Iran and Iraq?

5. Why did he begin with the substance and only ask about that symbolic stuff at the end?

Shame on ABC for not even having the courage to either apologize and move on (in which case, the McCain interview would have been just fine). In the alternative, they could have defended themselves and dealt with McCain as I described for the sake of consistency.

And since they chose not to do either of these and still have no guest that would criticize ABC's coverage, then they should have recused themselves from talking about it at all.

By characterizing and marginalizing criticism as a reaction from "Obama supporters" and dealing with it as they have, is insulting frustrated viewers of every political persuasion.
