Coming Up: Emanuel, Pawlenty, Nader

Share

June 28, 2008 6:40 PM

Ap_paw_ema_080627_main This Sunday, Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL) and Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R-MN) join George to debate the major political news of the week: the two landmark Supreme Court decisions, the unity effort of Sens. Obama and Clinton, the raft of new ’08 polls this week, and Obama’s shift to the center politically.

Then, Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader discusses his run at the White House.

On the "Roundtable,"  The Huffington Post’s Arianna Huffington, National Review’s Byron York, Townhall.com’s Hugh Hewitt, and The Nation’s Katrina vanden Heuvel debate the week's politics.

Dear George,

Did Katrina & Arianna both forget we do live in an audio/video era? Obama campaigned clearly and emphatically that, if elected, he would “immediately begin withdrawing” troops from Iraq. (Not much gray area here) This could be played and replayed from any number of speeches he has given across the country. At least Hillary had the good sense to always use the phrase “gradual and responsible“ withdrawal, knowing that an immediate exit would leave Iraq in utter chaos. But it is becoming increasingly clearer as we move closer to November, that Obama is just another politician and will, like the blowing wind, change his direction to fit the mood of the voter. (ie public campaign financing...is anybody keeping score yet)

I have to call out Charles Markham and Janet Dozier on their comments.

Janet, Gov. Pawlenty got much more uninterrupted and sole camera time than Sen. Emanuel. Sen. Emanuel never tried to talk over the Governor while the Governor often tried to talk over the Senator and George actually stopped the Senator so that the Governor could speak.

Charles, Governor Pawlenty is a Republican. Hugh Hewitt is a Republican . . . did you even pay attention or did you just want rail against the press as being anti-Republican no matter what the facts are?

Hey George.

I know you're a democrat.
I know you worked for Bill Clinton's
campaign in the war room.
My question is: why you didn't allow
the governor to respond Obama's flip/flap issues??????

I cannot wait to vote for McCain in
november.

The Obama campaign should be careful about unleashing Emanuel as a surrogate. He came across like a bully this morning - constantly interrupting, invading Pawlenty's space with those gratuitous pats on the arm and shoulder.

I liked Pawlenty's efforts attempting to get Emanuel to just give us ONE instance where Obama has stood up against a democratic party "sacred cow".

Emanuel couldn't because Obama hasn't!

What a lousy roundtable. I have no desire to listen to people like Hugh Hewitt regurgitate talking points. That conversation accomplished nothing. If that's how This Week is going to be, I'll be watching NBC from now on.

Yes, Janelle, the score is being kept. On flip-flops:

McCain: Waaaaayyyyyy to many to count
Obama: 1 (campaign financing)

Yes, Obama did say he 'would bring the troops home immediately' but what you do not include is the word 'start' and he also always said 'in a safe and responsible manner' and would 'consult with the commanders on the ground to ensure it is done safely and responsibly'. In fact, he is still saying he would start bringing them home immediately. No flip-flop there.

He has not flip-flopped on NAFTA either, he has always said he was pro-free trade but that he also wants to make sure it is fair trade. No flip-flop there.

I know, his positions and what he says is often too nuanced for most Americans but that just tells me that he is a very intelligent person. That's what I want in the office of the PResidency, not a C- person like we have now or a person who finished 5th from last from the US Naval Academy.

Well today's rountable was precisely the reason why America and Washington in particular gets nothing accomplished for the American people...it was, at it's core, a group of people talking to each other, not listening to each other and only ready to espuse their own narrow viewpoints, unwilling to compromise any other point as worthy of consideration...it was nauseating. To wrap this up in the mantle of responsible journalism is ludicrous.

I felt that along with showing that the bottom 60% of taxpayers would recieve only $157 in tax breaks under McCain plan, it would have been fair to point out that that the bottom 60% of taxpayers pay less than 1% of the total taxes.

Hey George.

The swiftboaters got a new book
coming up august in bookstores.
I know, you know that because you and
Charlie are political junkies.
I cannot wait those TV commercials
24/7 to define Obama..........as an
opportunist...left wing liberal....
Stay tune......

I thought too like several other here that Hugh Hewitt was an extremist fundamentalist and did not provide a balanced view. So George S., please do us a favor don't bring any rabid extremist on your show. George Will is an ultra right, but the way George conducts himself and argues his case is very civilized. So if you cannot get George Will, get someone else who is somewhat similar in his pro-republican stance but does it in a dignified manner.

It isn't surprising people see things the way they want. While I watched the interview between Rep. Emanuel and Gov Pawlenty, I thought it to be very one-sided also. Emanuel getting most of the time and doing most of the interrupting...so I just re-watched the interview (I always record the Sunday polical pundits) and Pawlenty spoke for a total of 4 min. and 15 sec trying to interrupt about 4 times, while Emanuel spoke for a total 7 min and 50 sec and interrupted so often that George final had to ask him to stop and let Tim finish a response.
We do see what we want.

As to Matthew, I was a potential Obama supporter, until I went to hear him speak at a rally. He is nothing more than the New McGovern.

John McCain is exactly what he appears to be. No bulls**t, he doesn't care whether you like him or not. If he gets elected great, if not, it's our loss. I live in Arizona, and if you check, you will not find any PorkBarrel by-products in our state. Your tax dollars are not being wasted here. We pay our own way and we take care of our own. That's the way McCain is, that's the way he thinks his state should be, and he would run the country the same way. Everyone should get a fair break if they do it the legal way (ie immigration, anti-torture, Geneva Convention.)
But maybe I've said to much...it's almost lunch time, I think I'll go have some Arugula or is that too nuanced... For all us stupid people out here...that's a kinda lettuce...

George, take control of your show, do not let Rep. Rahm Emanuel, dominate all of the time and talk over Gov. Tim Pawlenty's answers. I listen to this show every week, I began listening in the 1980's. You owe it to you audience to control the show, and not let a bully dominate the time.

Posted by: Stephen | Jun 29, 2008 4:20:30 PM

Hey Giorgos

Why did you allow a bully to control
YOUR SHOW??????????
Hussein Obama is fake,an opportunist
and manipulated the caucuses.
Unfit for commander in chief......

Janelle,

Go to Obama's web site and McCain's. Both give speeches and speeches are designed not to so much inform but to inspire. Barack is a very intelligent person and he sometimes gets too nuanced for most Americans (not suggesting you're one of those Americans, you actually sound intelligent).

McCain doesn't BS? Give me a break, they all BS but McCain has pulled the wool over your eyes. A maverick doesn't vote over 90% of the time (I'm being kind, it's more like 95%) with Pesident Bush. No matter how many times he tries to distance himself from him.

I was a potential McCain supporter until I heard him speak and heard what he thinks of the economy (something he knows very little about and thinks is fine), the type of Supreme Court Justices (that REALLY scared me!) and what his foreign policy would be like (not much different than the idiot's currently in the White House).

Janelle, you sound intelligent and open to seriously looking at Obama as a potential President. Dig deeper into each candidate's policy stances (go to their web sites and check the public record, don't listen to anyone else, even me), check out 'The Keating 5', look at each candidate's education (an honors graduate vs. someone 5th from the bottom of his class, remember we have a C- student as president now and you see how well that is going) and think about what will be best for the country.

Just let me say that, as a woman you should be scared of McCain, very scared. Especially if you have children.

Go Nader -- the only honest one in the bunch!

Posted by: Turku Wren | Jun 29, 2008 6:05:42 PM

Was anyone really expecting George to be an objective journalist?

Posted by: S | Jun 29, 2008 6:08:59 PM

I think on the interview today Gov. Pawlenty was too nice and still smiling even Sen. Rahm Emanuel looked very furious to him.
Gov. Pawlenty is a patient guy and Sen.Rahm Emanuel is arrogant guy.

Cokie Roberts and Sam Donaldson are much better than those 2 women today.
Especially Katrina is so annoying.

WCM,11:37:27,

I think he should. Let everybody uses the Public Financing, fair enough.
