Coming Up: Energy and Oil Prices
June 20, 2008 3:57 PM
This Sunday, George talks energy and oil prices with our exclusive guests: Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA), Red Cavaney, President and CEO of the American Petroleum Institute, and economist Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University.
On the "Roundtable," ABC News' Donna Brazile, Matthew Dowd, Cokie Roberts and Sam Donaldson debate the week's politics.

sid: I find them to be fair on the issues. What is the matter, does the truth hurt so you do not like them.
I have seen them tear at Obama just as much or more then they did Hillary or McCain.
They take a topic, find the truth and inform you on it.
So if you can't handle the truth then I guess you should not watch them.

loved this round table. much more informative than the usual. normally fast forward thru the interviews. too rehearsed, they don't really tell you anything. this was VERY good.

We hear a little about conservation and renewable but we hear little to nothing on population and future demands based on our need to breed.

After watching the discussion this morning, it's politics and no action as usual.
We should just title our situation as the following:
"The Oil companies destuction and rip off and ruining of America."
Exxon makes $40 Billion(never mind the others)and most of it back to sharholders
When are our politicans really going to take action and do something about this huge price gouging? It's time clamps be put on an industry that is ruining every americans lives.
Rep. Markey is my rep and he never answered my question close to 3 months ago!
As long as our elcected officals are personally benefiting from the current energy situation nothing will be done.

Rep. Markey proved to be the typical Pompous Politician who cares more for Eloquent Evasion than for truth. He knows the Bush administration has spent
far more on alternative fuel research than the Clinton administartion. He knows that all his platitudes will do absolutely nothing to bring down oil prices for the next five years at best. Show more of people like Ed Markey to the American voters. Only by seeing his hypocrisy first hand will the voters realize he desparately wants to reduce the American economy to third world standards and leave room for "benevolent" dictators like Hugo Chavez.

Watching the broadcast, someone need to educate Markey that only a minor portion of generation in the US is oil fired. It is fueled by coal, natural gas produced in North America, nuclear, and to a lesser extent wind / geothermal, etc. This is a plain fact that is easy to verify. Thus, increasing wind and solar has effectively zero impact on the supply/demand balance for oil. I'm not opposed to wind and solar, but lets get the argument right. Additionally, wind and solar are not baseload sources of generation, so they are not the magic bullet. I work in the power industry and am all for reducing our dependence on oil and reducing emissions, however let's have intelligent discourse in order to come to the right answer.

The oil robber barrens keep talking about the need for more supply. They are right, but what we need is more supply of something else besides oil. As long as oil is a monopoly and consumers don't have viable alternatives available, the price of oil will continue to go up and we'll continue to pay through the nose because we don't have any other choice. Let the free market work; when there is competition, prices go down. Stop blocking research, development and availabitiy of alternatives.

Why do people in this country not recognize that the oil companies are simply the American people. Do you have a clue who holds their stock ? Have you ever heard of a pension fund ?

The simple fact is that the only viable solution for delivering the energy that we need is nuclear power. Ask any respectable physicist to run the numbers for you. You'll find out that even with the most generous assumptions solar, wind and tidal cannot scale to meet our needs. All good for small scale such as helping to power homes in the southwest but not scalable to meet our needs even assuming massive conservation.
Clean coal is an oxymoron and a pipe dream brought to you by the coal industry. Again ask a physicist. Plus coal is actually way more dangerous than nuclear when you take into account the health risks associated with mining.
Plus our known domestic nuclear power fuel reserves can provide 80% of our total energy needs for 1000 years. Make a couple assumptions about the use of breeder reactors and improved technology and we can go 10 times that long.
Even better, no CO2 and minimal waste that can be securely and safely stored. Yes, safely especially when you consider the risks associated with our current dependence on middle east oil.
We need to get serious and what is clear from the discussion on your show is that our politicians are clueless as to the physics.

Where were the representatives of the other oil/ gas producing and oil/gas consuming nations? George is just a hack. It was like the Mad Hatters Tea Party.

Senetor Kay, bipartisan bipartisan bipartisan, but her first words were it's the Democrats fault.
Mention of all the unexplored leases and Red says we are drilling with all the rigs we have. If so than how will providing more leases increase production unless you build more rigs?
Where's the incentive to cause record profit companies to increase supply when tight supply keeps the profits high?
Oligopoly look it up in Wikipedia if you need a definition. Limited competition and the oil companies rail against environmentalist while secretly enjoying all the barriers to competition that the oilyGOPoly has built over the years.

George- I enjoy your show but would like to bring a glaring issue to your attention. I believe that Ms.Donna Brazile no longer has the credibility to be a part of the Roundtable team. Donna Brazile, as a vocal Super Delegate, was a part of the primary election result "fixing" by the DNC for Obama and thus has has lost all measures of objectivity, decency and honesty to be able to offer any credible opinion on your show. Drop this DNC and Obama maniac now from your roundtable now so that your credility remains intact. Brazile should not be in the august and respected company of Will, Roberts or Donalson.

I paid more attention today than I have in ahile, (tyr to watch every Sunday morning) and couldn't believe I was hearing "It's all the Democrats fault..." over and over. No one party is responsible for everything.....individuals who are allowed to do what they do are responsible!
Also, aside from the oil crisis.... can someone explain to me why a foreign country was given the military contract for air machines rather than Boeing?

The show on oil was one of the worst I have seen. Instead of using this opportunity to actually tell the public why this is occurring, you subjected us to the usual Demo vs Repulican blame game. There must be many people who can discuss this intelligently. Where are they? Don't you think we are weary of what you gave us? And then no George Will and nary a mention of where he was.

I was disturbed to hear the outright lies the two "Righties" were spewing all over your show. Its seems more and more the only true move the republicans know how to make is to spew lies and turn the blame on the next closest democract, or independant.
The repub's are known to be in money, especially where oil is concerned, so who do the Repubs think the're fooling?
I know the Dems aren't saints , but do the Republicans think general americans are that un-informed to understand what they are saying??
Basically, we dont need to open any new reserves, or shelves , or anything, the oil WE KNOW IS AVAILABLE hasent been tapped yet.and repubs want to open new explorations???? Who gonna make millions off that idea. Our oil reserve could do enough to thwart the speculators right now, and future drilling would replace our reserve when it gets depleted, no rocket science, or masters degree involved, just simple logic.

Great show. Great topic. I am disturbed that it is obvious that we need more energy but Rep. Markey and Mr. Sachs would rather use this issue to discredit our current President or advocate a Presidential candidate. They seem to be more interested in politics than solve the energy problem. Just proves that anybody with a pulse can be a Representative or Lobbyest.
We simply need more energy from all sources. That means we have to embrace nuclear, new petroleum, solar, wind, and others. No rocket science here.
Unfortunately, keeping gas prices high is the best way to keep people focused on the problem. However, with that kind of daily pressure and the pump, we will have the willingness as a nation to make the changes we will (unfortunately) see 5 years from now.

I was extrememly dissappointed in the Energy Program this sunday. Not much mention of Nuclear-It is the way to go-We need to bring back to America the casting of the Nuclear Vessels. if not 19 years to get one in Japan!!! No mention of bacteria mfg of gasoline research. Not much mention of smart using of Coal. No mention of a pipeline from Canada to Refinerys in the Northern States. We need some reality thinking by Dems and Repubs. Are we going to get it. Im' depressed

Please make note. Everyone wants to blame Exxon, Chevron and the other "Big Oil Companies"...
Over 70% of World wide Oil production is controled by Government ran oil companies. Chavez in Venezuela, Pemex in Mexico, Saudi Aramco, Russia, Nigeria etc etc.
So somebody remind me what happens when Government controls things?
