Austin Cloyd, 18, Blacksburg, Va.
April 18, 2007 7:16 PM
Austin Cloyd, an international studies major, dreamed of one day working for the United Nations, her father told the Associated Press. Cloyd was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Champaign, Ill., and enjoyed playing volleyball and basketball. But above all, she seemed to have a sense of social responsibility and helping people.
The Rev. Terry Harter of the First United Methodist Church told the Associated Press that "She was so inspired by an Appalachian service project that helped rehab homes, that she and her mother started a similar program in Illinois." At Virginia Tech, Cloyd was involved in an international rights organization and worked as a lifeguard at the student sports center. Cloyd would have turned 19 next week.

At the time of this horrible tragedy, I was touring the campus of the University of Michigan with my stepdaughter who is a high school senior. I can't imagine what all of you are going through, but my thoughts and prayers are with all of the victims and their families. God Bless All of You!

So sorry for your loss. May God be with you in the days ahead. Such a senseless tragedy. I feel that our universe has been stripped of such potential. You are forever in our prayers.

There are no words to leaven the pain of your loss and this tragedy. But the following is a humble offering that hopefully will bring some comfort, when you feel the sun shining again:
In the rising of the sun and in its going down, we remember them.
In the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter, we remember them.
In the opening of buds and in the warmth of summer, we remember them.
In the beginning of the year and when it ends, we remember them.
So long as we live they, too, shall live for they are now a part of us as we remember them.

Don't stand beside my grave and weep.
For I'm not there. I do not sleep.
When you awake from sleep in hush,
and hear the swift, uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circling flight;
Or in the soft starlight of night,
I'll be that gentle breeze that blows,
in moonlit glints of falling snow;
Or sunlight on the ripened grain,
after a gentle autumn rain.
Don't stand beside my grave and weep.
I am not there. I do not sleep.

I was so saddened by the loss of lives at Virginia Tech. My daughter who is also away at College and who isn't as academically driven said "but these kids were actually trying to be somebody." I only know Austin by what I read but this sounds like her. She was somebody, she made a difference even in her short life. My thoughts and prayers to her family.

Though my heart aches with grief, mainly because of the sensless nature of the violence that came as a result of one person's irrational hatred, I've decided that the only way to personally make sense of this is to NOT forget Austin's smiling face, to ALWAYS be reminded to bring the humanity that lives just under the skin of all of us more completely to the surface.

To the Cloyd Family:
Please accept our deepest sympathy on the tragic loss of your precious daughter. We, along with many others, mourn the loss of your daughter and all the other victims of this unspeakable tragedy. Take comfort in the thought that soon death will be a thing of the past. "He will actually swallow up death forever, and the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will certainly wipe the tears from all faces." (Isaiah 25:8; Revelation 21:3,4) It is our sincere hope that your family and friends will find the needed strength and comfort to endure. (2 Corinthians 1:2-7) We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

To the Cloyd Family,
Please accept my deepest and sincerest condolences to you, the family of Austin Cloyd, on the loss of your daughter. As a mother of a daughter who's on her way to the Army, I can only say that while I have no sense of depth of how you're feeling, I can imagine that it must be the most difficult emotional pain that God lies upon our shoulders as human beings. She was a real beauty, I'm sure inside as well as out. Please know that your family are in my prayers and please, take care of yourselves.
May God bless you and keep you...
