Daniel O’Neil, 22, Lincoln, R.I.

April 18, 2007 6:58 PM

Ap_oneil_070417_blogDaniel O'Neil was a graduate student in environmental engineering, who hailed from Lincoln, R.I. He was among those killed in Norris Hall, according to Connecticut College, where O'Neil's father, Bill, is director of major gifts.

O'Neill's friend Steve Craveiro described him to The Associated Press as smart, responsible and a hard worker -- someone who never got into trouble. O'Neil graduated in 2002 from Lincoln High School and from Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., before heading to Virginia, where he was also a teaching assistant.

A musician, he played guitar and wrote his own songs, which he posted on a Web site. According to Craveiro, O'Neill always had big plans. "He would come home from school over the summer and talk about projects, about building bridges and stuff like that," Craveiro said. "He loved his family. He was pretty much destined to be extremely successful. He just didn't deserve to have happen what happened."

Dear O'Neil Family;

We are parents of a Hokie Graduate Student alum and live in Barrington, RI. We were glued to the TV after the shooting, remembering our fun trips to peaceful Blacksburg.
We were devastated to read that your wonderful son, so full of promise was a victim. Words cannot express our sympathy. May you find peace. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

May you find peace in this troubling time. I recall a speech made by Mary Levy of the Buffalo Bills National football team when he was inducted into the NFL hall of fame... he mentions his having served in the army with 21 of his classmates... only three of those classmates returned from the war, he being one and the other 18 were to remain "forever young". I am sure your son/brother/friend will be waiting for you with open arms and a bright smile when you shall meet again... for he is "forever young".

There are no words to leaven the pain of your loss and this tragedy. But the following is a humble offering (from fellow Nutmeggers who work in academe) that hopefully will bring some comfort, when you feel the sun shining again:

In the rising of the sun and in its going down, we remember them.

In the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter, we remember them.

In the opening of buds and in the warmth of summer, we remember them.

In the beginning of the year and when it ends, we remember them.

So long as we live they, too, shall live for they are now a part of us as we remember them.

Right now I am living in California, but originally from Warwick, Rhode Island and I recognize Daniel's bright smile. I know I have seen him back at home, Rhode Island is a pretty cozy place. Daniel was a remarkable person (his website is beautiful) and I know I will try to live each day the way he would in his honor. My heart goes out to the O'Neil family and may you find comfort through family support and precious memories. But most of all know that you will all be together again someday, I truly believe that. May God bless you.

Dear O'Neil Family,

My sincerest heartfelt sympathy for the loss of your son. I was sadly moved by these events and the loss of innocent lives. Know that there are many people who are heartfelt as I about this tragedy and the senseless of your son's young life.

Dear O'Neil Family and Friends:

I am a Lafayette '06 alum and was very sorry to hear that Dan was a victim of such a senseless tragedy. Although I didn't know Dan personally, when I saw his picture he had a very familiar face. He was a friend of several friends and we walked the halls of AEC at Lafayette together. My thoughts and prayers are with your family. I hope Dan's music brings you some comfort in this time of mourning.
May God Bless You.
