Jeremy Michael Herbstritt, 27, Bellefonte, Pa.
April 18, 2007 7:06 PM
Jeremy Herbstritt, a Penn State graduate who was attending graduate school at Virginia Tech, was another victim in the shootings, said Paul Ruskin, spokesman for Penn State's Office of Physical Plant.
When he graduated, Herbstritt, a notorious gadfly, was named “Most Talkative” in the 1998 Bellefonte High School yearbook. According to The Associated Press, Herbstritt grew up on a small farm in central Pennsylvania, where his father, Michael, raised steer and sheep.
"He liked to work on machinery, take a lot of stuff apart and fixed it," his grandfather Thomas Herbstritt told the AP. "He was a studious kid."
Herbstritt was also reportedly an avid runner who liked to kayak. He had been an altar boy, and was involved in research on the West Nile disease while at Penn State. Herbstritt's parents were in Boston Monday to watch their daughter run in the Boston Marathon when the shootings occurred. He was a graduate student studying civil engineering at Virginia Tech, according to the student directory on the college's Web site.

There are no words to leaven the pain of your loss and this tragedy. But the following is a humble offering that hopefully will bring some comfort, when you feel the sun shining again:
In the rising of the sun and in its going down, we remember them.
In the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter, we remember them.
In the opening of buds and in the warmth of summer, we remember them.
In the beginning of the year and when it ends, we remember them.
So long as we live they, too, shall live for they are now a part of us as we remember them.

In memory of JEREMY HERBSTRITT - Your son's name and picture captured my heart from the moment I saw them. I have a son his age. Jeremy is in my prayers and thoughts daily. I pray that your family will find the peace that has been taken from you and that you will find, once more, the joy that his life brought you. May God bless you, and all the families, in this time of sorrow.

It is not enough to say the worlds thoughts and prayers are with you. The media blitz overwhelmed us with the constant barrage of images. But it also showed us what a remarkable young man Jeremy was. I keep thinking these young people were our next leaders. Their legacy will live on in the lives of those who were touched by this tragedy.

Jeremy's vibrance was apparent to me, even someone who never knew him. You can just tell what a beautiful person he turned out to be. I wanted to let the family and friends of Jeremy Herbstritt know that it wasn't lost on us, the citizens of the U.S., what a horrible loss you have suffered. I also wanted to let you know that his radiance and vitality are apparent still, even to those that never had the blessing of knowing him. May God be with you.

Jeremy has an infectious smile! I can see his bubbly personality all over his face! I also have a son. My heart reaches out to all of you. The citizens of the U.S. are heartbroken that our children were taken away from their lives. Know that I think of your son as I do all the victims of this tragedy. Know that you are not alone. My thoughts are with you and may your heart heal in time with strength.
My heartfelt sorrow for your loss.

I did not know Jeremy, but the minute I heard his parents talking about his work with West Nile virus - I found I did know him. I knew him by what it takes to work with mosquitoes - intelligence, humor, tenacity, and spirit. Another brilliant mind taken by a senceless act. The hearts of the entire Florida mosquito control community go out to all who knew and loved Jeremy.

I never met Jeremy but he was my 3rd cousin. Our family has suffered greatly with the loss of such a brilliant, kind and handsome young gentleman. His tragic loss is felt by every member of our family, even those who never had the honor of meeting him.
Speaking for all the Herbstritts on the west coast, my, or rather our, condolances to Michael, Peggy, Jennifer, Joseph, Stephanie, Thomas and Mary Herbstritt, and to Alexis Bozzo.
The thoughts and prayers of the entire Herbstritt family are with you in the loss of Jeremy. He will be missed by us all.
God bless,
Chris Herbstritt
