Jocelyn Couture-Nowak, 49, Montreal, Canada
April 18, 2007 7:15 PM
A foreign language professor and former Montreal resident, Couture-Nowak taught at Virginia Tech with her husband Jerzy Nowak, a horticultural professor. Couture-Nowak and her husband taught at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College before moving to Virginia, where she was well liked by students and faculty.
One fellow Virginia Tech professor, Craig Brians, told "Canada AM," "She was a very nice person ... My wife often described Jocelyn as someone [who] when she'd walk into a room, just would bring a smile to the room, that even in the darkest of situations, she had something encouraging to say. She would have something uplifting to say."

I am the Uncle of Leslie, she and all the people killed at VT where all remarkable folks. The world lost a great deal. Leslie was a grat person, she donate blood like clockwork, and had for several years donated her hair to locks of love, ran in marathons, worked partime in the school dinning hall she save the entire amount ( $4,000) for her trip to Russia. In her e-mails the day before she made comment about how happy she was with V.T. her friends, classes , and her trip next month.

Mme Couture-Nowak was my french teacher for 2 years while I attended Nova Scotia Teachers Collage in 1993-1995. She was a wonderful teacher, a light in a dark room. She will be sadly missed. My deepest Sympathies, all my thoughts and prayers are with you, God Bless.

There are no words to leaven the pain of your loss and this tragedy. But the following is a humble offering that hopefully will bring some comfort, when you feel the sun shining again:
In the rising of the sun and in its going down, we remember them.
In the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter, we remember them.
In the opening of buds and in the warmth of summer, we remember them.
In the beginning of the year and when it ends, we remember them.
So long as we live they, too, shall live for they are now a part of us as we remember them.

I grieve with you for the loss of such a remarkable person. May you find comfort through family/friends support and precious memories. Please do not become filled with hate but instead love like there is no tommorow. We don't know why such tragedies happen, but through such pain we need to create positive change. My faith has me believe that you will be reunited again someday. Please accept my prayers and love during this time of sorrow.

To the Family of Jocelyn Couture-Nowak:
Please accept our deepest sympathy. Like many others, we were so sorry to hear of the tragic death of your loved one.By all accounts, your wife, daughter, and friend was a fine person and will be sorely missed. Take comfort in knowing that soon death will be a thing of the past."He will actually swallow up death forever, and the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will certainly wipe the tears from all faces." (Isaiah 25:8; Revelation 21:3,4)It is our sincere hope that you will find the needed comfort and strength to endure this difficult time. (2 Corinthians 1:2-7) We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. Warmest regards.
