Ap_librescu_070417_blog Romanian-born Liviu Librescu, an engineering science and mathematics professor at Virginia Tech, was killed in the Virginia Tech massacre. According to Librescu's son, students sent e-mails explaining that the professor had risked his life for his students by blocking the doorway of his classroom and allowing students to flee through windows. He was then fatally shot. Librescu, a Holocaust survivor, had an international reputation for his work in aeronautical engineering. He died the same day Israel marked Holocaust Martyrs and Heroes Remembrance Day

The world is in terrible grief for the loss of such a guy while the survived students are fortunate enough to have such a great professor. God bless all the victims and survivors! God bless VT!

When such a horrific tragedy strikes, we sometimes ask ourselves "how would we react?" Here was a man who survived the most dark evil man has visited upon his fellow man, and gave his life for the lives of his students. Truly a HERO. While his loss must surely be profound to his family, his legacy includes the lives of his students that he saved, and showing the rest of us the shining example of just how good we can be.

After hearing the heroic story of Professor Librescu, it is obvious the world lost a truly remarkable man. I did not have the honor of knowing him during his time here on earth, but as he demonstrated Monday morning, he was the epitome of what it means to be a man for others. I can only hope to live my life as he did; selflessly giving everything he had to save the lives of his students. Although he is no longer with us, the ultimate sacrifice he made will never be forgotten.

There is a quote by Edmund Burke that adorns a poster in my office adjacent to my desk that reads, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

Amidst the strife and confusion of bullets strafing the hallway, shouts of terror and blood spilling, a man stood ready to stand his ground one last time.

This same man had, many years before, looked the devil in the face, and through an indomitable spirt, became an impactful force on youth for many years as a teacher.

This man, Liviu Librescu, dared to do what was right, knowing fully-well that the cost would be the ultimate one. Heroically standing in the doorway against an unknown enemy, he gave just a few moments for students to rush out of the windows.

May those students who escaped due to his heroism remember this quote, from Ralph Waldo Emerson, "A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is braver five minutes longer."

Thank you, Mr. Librescu, for that additional five minutes--may the familes of those you saved recognize that Sura from the Koran, "Every soul doth, for a surety, have an angel watching over it." You were that angel. I am not a student at VT, and have never before even heard of these people, but am powerfully touched by what I have read.

Thank you.

When we look for hope somewhere in this tragedy, we find the example of Professor Librescu. He knew what horror was; he knew what was coming. He urged his students out the window and then he stayed behind to keep them safe. May God protect and care for his family and friends in their sorrow. This was truly a good and great man.

What an example of courage. Few people will ever exemplify courage like Professor Librescu. This story is heartbreaking yet uplifting. You would think that a man who survived the Holocuast should never experience anything terrible again. But even in the darkest moment, he was a role model and not a coward. God bless his family.

So sorry for your loss. Be comforted in these words, "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends."
John 15:13 What an incredible picture of LOVE Professor Librescu demonstrated for his students. The ultimate example of LOVE. You will forever be in our prayers. God bless.

"He who saves a life, saves the world eternal."

By saving those students lives through your actions, we have learned what it truly means to be human, living together with consideration and selflessness. We have learned what we need to do and how we need to treat each other from now on: Compassionately and with love and caring for each other instead of continuing with the hate-filled chaos that has existed for so long.

Thank you for the reminder and by carrying your message forward and changing how we relate to each other as human beings, we can indeed save the world.

I live in Houston Texas and I have been watching the news in every spare moment of the day. My heart goes out to every family affected by this horrific tragedy.
I think your loved one did the most heroic thing possible to protect his students in a horrible situation. You should be so proud of him. Please know that the World is with you in your mourning.

Your loved one died, but the sacrifice that he made was the crowning achievement of his already very amazing life. His selfless heroism should be a shining light that reminds us that although we live with great evil in our midst, we also live with great goodness.

Not only are you a hero, but a brave man who has seen the worst of man while showing us about what is good. Professor Librescu did what I am not sure if I could do. However, may we all learn from his life.

My G_d comfort the family of Professor Librescu.
