Partahi Lumbantoruan, 34, Indonesia
April 18, 2007 6:59 PM
An Indonesian doctoral student, Lumbantoruan studied civil engineering at Virginia Tech. Devoted to his education, he and his family sold property and cars so he could attend Virginia Tech. His father, Tohom Lumbantoruan, told The Associated Press, "We tried everything to completely finance his studies in the United States. We only wanted him to succeed in his studies, but ... he met a tragic fate."
Lumbantoruan was known to be a hard-working student, who was in his third year of studies at Virginia Tech. Family members were planning a public burial in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta.

Partahi's family must be devastated by this unnecessary tragedy, and I cry for them that this is the america they experienced. Please know that many an american are horrified that this happened and that guns are so easily sold, mental health be damned. I pray for you that Partahi's murder is not in vain, that people will see this as a reason to take on the powers that refuse to stem the cycle of violence in america, .. that refuse to fully fund mental health clinics, .. so that crazy people get off the streets. Sincerely, margot geitheim

To Partahi's family,
You poured out your heart and soul financially and emotionally, to raise an outstanding son that you can be proud of. Remember, he indeed turned out to be exceptional by pursuing his dream at VTech for his doctoral degree. Continue to be proud of him. And may God comfort you at your tragic lost, and engulf you with love ones and fond memories of your son.

I grieve with you for the loss of such a remarkable and brilliant person. May you find comfort through family/friends support and precious memories of times shared with Partahi. Please do not become filled with hate but instead love like there is no tommorow. We don't know why such tragedies happen, but through such pain we need to create positive change. My faith has me believe that you will be reunited again someday. Please accept my prayers and love during your time of sorrow.

My deepest condolences to all the families of the victims, near and far. I pray for your children and give thanks for the gifts of their lives in my life. May God bless all those who, like Partahi, tried to make this a better world for all, and for his family, who showed such love and support for him. We won't forget Partahi and all these shining stars.
