Here's our full interview with Michelle O and Jill B on women, work and Sara Palin! We could only fit a third of it on GMA, but the rest is worth listening to. I was struck by how hard this economy is on women especially--who are trying to figure out how to take care of parents, children and save what little they can. For so many women these days the issue about balancing work and kids isn't as much about balance as it is the sheer economics of it all. There's no choice but to work--and that makes having some flexibility from employers all the more critical. If you don't have the luxury of part-time or not working at all, how wonderful it would be to at least know you can attend your kids' plays or sports events, or make it to parent-teacher conferences. Or get home at a decent hour.
But the question is--how much can government help? Obama and Biden would say it can help by expanding the family and medical leave act to include sick days, by pushing equal pay legislation, by ensuring health-care. In many ways though, women's lives could be helped as much by creative corporate thinking--policies that promote flexibility and a healthy work-life situation.

I just watched the Full Episode of your interview with Michelle Obama and Jill Biden.
As a woman in America who is both watching what is happening in our country, in this election and frankly our world - this is a very important time across all levels.
It was absolutely refreshing to hear a discussion with substance, respect and focused on what really is important to American families and women. After the election, we are left with the real day-to-day issues, and to pretend anything else seems more a form of denial or avoidance. It may feel good to have a reprieve from our day-to-day hardships with the hype on Palin, but how is it truly helping?
I for one am not interested in having my choices curtailed. I for one am looking for real women discussing the real issues - and how change can/will occur. I for one am "getting" how much this is about participation in change rather than sitting back and criticizing/blaming.
I appreciated this interview. It wasn't wrought with emotional bashing, intended avoidance and sidestepping. What you see is what you get. We need that - and as they both said - they have been there, are there and care to deal with it, not avoid.
My personal opinion - the avoidance of dealing with the issues by focusing on the hype around a woman VP pick is deeply unfortunate. Many of us watch this emotional distraction with a vow to stay more focused on a Obama/Biden win. I am tremendously tired of being manipulated.
And I am grateful for ABC airing such interviews - more women discussing this in the news - in this fashion is what we need.

Nc...Real women discussing real issues and seeing that change will occur...you said it in a nutshell...Gov. Sarah Palin is going to herald in a new era...and we won't wait another 24 years to see a woman on a ticket (Geraldine Ferraro). Strong women supporting strong women and their choices....PROUD HILLARY SUPPORTER WHO SWITCHED TO McCAIN even before McCain picked Palin, but it makes it that much sweeter.
