Can women save the economy?

July 12, 2009 9:20 PM

Katty and I prescribe a novel solution in the Outlook section of the Washington Post: women could be the answer to our economic ailments. There's a hefty batch of research that shows the more senior women a company employees, the more money it makes. And a lot of evidence that women manage differently--we are more cautious and inclusive, while men are more competitive and prone to risk-taking. Nick Kristof discussed some of this a few months ago, but we take it one step further by suggesting that the only way women will get to the top is in a more flexible workplace. Let us know what you think.

Sounds conservative to me. What's not to like?

I think it is a great idea.... Men have been messing things up long enough... Its time women have a chance to prove what they can do... If Hillary had been elected President I think we would have been closer to handling the economy better by now...Go Women......

It's about time men learn to share responsibility with women. Men are largely responsible for this economic mess we're in now and also largely responsible for the world's violence. Is this the world we want: violent and corrupt?

It's time for men to share responsibility with women and it's time to stop treating women as second class citizens. Anything less is discrimination.

Women are becoming more competitive and risk takers then they have ever been. Over the next five years there will be a vast difference in the flexability in the work place. There are more remote positions and corporations are leaning towards their employees working at minimal a partial week working from home.

Great topic!

Over the next 5 years we are going to see an increase in a more flexible work environment. More and more corporations are leaning towards working remotely. Typically, at minimum, a partial work week. Women are excellent at multitasking and with the ability of working remotely, there will be an increase in competitiveness and risk-taking.

Sadly, Ron Paul is not a woman.

As usual...women take no responsibility for what goes on in the world, it's always the MAN'S Fault...needless to say that men do thing's because of controlling women...Hear this Ladies...marriage is DEAD...screwing men in the court's has made it SO!!!!!!!!!!!

do u think so? wow...americans are dumb!!!! What good has women's lib brought for us? nothing...Women take no responsibility for their action....Women talk of equal rights but at the same time in divorce court they cry like babies and demand for 90% of everything the men worked for even before he met her. Don't you think that if they think they are so high and mighty then they should stop asking for alimony and fend for themselves just like the men?

Also what does the Bible have to say about the head of the house? Let's read in Ephesians 5:23-24: "For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything."

This country is doomed for it does everything that God despises. We have been going downhill since the day we let women have equal rights.

I believe that womenm should work...and excel ...but like everything else there

there should be boundaries.

That's a rough question since the business world alone does not need to change, perceptions and support systems need to change also. I am a relatively successful independent contractor working for a large company who is now at risk of losing shared custody of my children through divorce. I am learning that he (or in this case she) who earns most, loses most in a divorce. Since I am earning the money and therefore can not be home as much as my soon to be ex-husband, I may lose the right to have my children 50% of the time. All of my life I have strived to be equal; well... thanks for nothing.

One of the survey shows that few women who do make it in that world have to make many compromises – and not just by tagging along to lap-dancing clubs or snorting as much coke as the boys, half of women in senior positions in investment banking – average age 42 – had no children, while a quarter of those who did had stay-at-home husbands.
