Gorilla Distraught Over Her Dead Baby
August 19, 2008 12:42 PM
By Christel Kucharz, ABC News Producer, Germany
11-year-old gorilla mother Gana has been distraught and grieving over the sudden death of her baby Claudio.
The 3-month-old gorilla baby died suddenly in his mothers arms last Saturday at the gorilla compound of the zoo in Muenster, Germany.
Visitors of the zoo witnessed a picture of pure grief as the mother gorilla stared at the corpse in shock and bewilderment over the sudden death, as if she could not believe what happened.
“She was holding her baby in her arms when it died,” zoo director Joerg Adler told reporters, “at first she was just holding her baby and then she started stroking the body to try and bring it back to life unable to accept that her baby is dead.”
“She gently placed him on her back and walked slowly around the compound, stopping every few paces to look if he had returned to life. It is heartbreaking,” he said.
“Some of the zoo visitors were so moved, they could not stop crying.”
Zoo veterinarian Dirk Wewers explained, “What we see here is a mother’s farewell to her dead child. This kind of behaviour is totally normal for all monkeys, not just gorillas. These animals have a very close attachment to their babies and they need time to cope with death. In the wild, it can sometimes take a week or two before the mother finally will let go.”
“This is perhaps one of the gifts a zoo can offer – to show that animals are very much like us when it comes to feel[ing] elation and pain. Gana’s loss is teaching our visitors so much.”
Officials say that Claudio’s body will be examined to establish what caused his death, but so far mother Gana is not letting anyone close to him.
She’s still carrying the lifeless body around, holding it tight to her and slowly walking around in her compound.
And though she appears a bit calmer today, zookeepers are still unable to get to the body of the gorilla baby, so fiercely is his mother guarding him.

Very Sad. Breaks my heart. Animals love like humans do and I wish others could fathom that we are not the only species that love.

Poor mama gorilla. :-(

And what a shame that mother and infant had to go through this while imprisoned and under the eye of others.

Yes, evelyn, much better that she should be killed in Africa by hunters for her organs or her hands/feet! You do know that they're being brought to the brink of extinction there, don't you?

I hope she's not all alone. She should be with another gorilla now to console her.

Ah the difference between animals and men.... yet humanity remains.

Anyone notice the vitriol coming from those who refuse to acknowledge the sanctity of other life beside homo sapiens?

Chill out Citizen in Fl, you sound hungry, so have yourself a hero sandwich and shut the hell up.

Wow, Citizen in FL, you sound vicious.

I am so sorry for the mother. I know her heart is broken. Let her grieve for however long it takes. There should never be a time limit on grief. All animals are God's gifts to us and we should learn to respect them and always love them.

I feel so bad for the mother. The zoo keepers should let her grieve in piece and i also believe that she should have the comfort from another gorilla.

Citizen in FL, along with the rest of America's right wingnut, "hippy"-hating conservatives is a lot closer to a domestic terrorist than is Evelyn.

Valium, anyone?
Posted by: Kelli | Aug 19, 2008 4:49:20 PM
It's very sad.
Animals also have feelings just like human.
The worst is her baby died in her arm.
Why the zoo did not even know the baby was dying?
Didn't they check on him when he was born?
I hope the zoo keeper will let her stay with her friend , so she will let it go sooner.

A lesson on evolution: We have all 3 levels of brain mentioned here. First, and most basic is the reptilian brain. It is in control of things such as breathing, heart rate and autonomic functions. It is also in control of our flight or fight instinct. Second level: paleomammalian brain. This is the next level of the brain which sits on top of the reptilian brain. It controls emotions and feels and all mammals have it. Hence why animals truly do display emotion. Next highest (and also the thinest) the neomammalian brain. This controls intellectual tasks. Only a few species have demonstrated that they have this level. Humans, Chimpanzees and I believe orangatans. One of the big tests to prove this is the mirror test. Only species that can recognize that what they see in the mirror is themself, are they said to contain the neomammalian brain. But, I also like to argue that species with the paleomammalian brain also can make decisions and think. I do not think you can experience emotions if you can not realize what the implications of an action or outcome is. So let this gorilla mourn and stop thinking that we are the only species that thinks.

Citizen, news flash for ya, pretty much everyone on this Blog sees you as inferior to an animal of pretty much any kind, yep, even a dung beetle. Why are you breathing my air little beatch?

Citizen in FL: You're wrong. Animals are superior to humans. Here's proof: I'm human and I hope and pray that you, your wife and your daughter all get excrutiating forms of pancreatic cancer and die slow and painful deaths. An animal would never/could never wish something so horrific as that. So, go now and die. Bye. Be-aaaatch!

Citizen in FL: lol on the 4 2 0
Baby gorillas die in the wild, too, and the mothers mourn the same way there that they do in captivity. It's sad no matter where it happens, but I'm not about to go all PETA-nazi on the zoo. Maybe they'll give her a kitten or something (I thought I remembered a story where a gorilla adopted a kitten and raised it after she lost her baby).

A story as sad and sweet as this and people respond to it by name calling and hate. This is yet more proof to me that humans are inferior to animals in every way.

But in America, many women fight for, support, and embrace the idea of abortion. They are probably insane or unfeeling, self absorbed pop tarts. In any case, I hope they feel complete shame. Obviously, they are incapable of remorse.

What the article didn't tell you is that the gorilla mother abused her first offspring. The zoo keeper had to remove the offspring, nurture the baby back to health, and eventually move the offspring to another zoo. As for the second offspring, the zoo keeper let nature takes its course and hence the death.
In the over scheme of thing, let's not react to what the media publish. We humans get into serious conflicts when we overreact emotionally or physically to events in which we fully do not understand.

Hey, citizen. when I was boning your tramp wife she didn't mention you had an SUV but she did mention you are hung like a chinchilla, with a brain to match

Citizen in FL, you seem to have the brain of a p-i-s-s ant. You are a user. Do you give anything back, ever do any worthwhile volunteer work. Or is it all about yourself and your hog lifestyle? May the latest tropical storm wipe you and your hog lifestyle out.
