Make-Up For Men
August 01, 2008 12:49 PM
Millions of dollars have been made selling moisturizers to men -- but is makeup for men a step too far?
A British chain of health stores, Superdrug, this week launched "Guy-liner" and "Manscara" for enhancing men's eyes. Later this summer, lip balm and concealer exclusively designed for men will hit the shelves.
"We've developed essentials any guy would borrow from his other half.” said Peter Kelly, designer of the new cosmetics for Superdrug, the chain store.
"It's about subtle makeup rather than wanting to create the drag queen look," he told The Telegraph newspaper.
Superdrug clearly believes there are profits to be had, but market research published in May of this year doesn’t sound promising.
Mintel, a global market research company, revealed that the average British man spends less than $5 a year on skin care.
In their latest analysis, Mintel said men are more likely to buy products that hide tiredness and fatigue than those which decorate the face.
“It is unlikely that your average office worker will want to wear mascara or eye liner, although the next products to be introduced, Taxi Man concealer and lip balm, are likely to hold more appeal,” says Mintel on its Web site.

This is not the first company to come out with men's make up. I think it is Gautier that came out with make up for men a couple of years ago.
How many men wear make up these day? Besides men on TV, movies, magazines, and ads.
What will they come out with next...
