Russia Votes For Independent States

The front page of Russia’s Kommersant newspaper today trumpeted, “Russia is ready for the independence of Abkhazia and S. Ossetia” and if the results of today’s parliamentary vote are anything to go by, that would seem to be true.

Both houses of Russia’s parliament voted unanimously to recognise the independence of Georgia’s breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The vote is largely symbolic as it is non-binding but it will now be sent to the Kremlin for approval. Analysts here say President Dmitry Medvedev may well use it as a bargaining chip with the West as negotiations continue over Russia's conflict with Georgia.

During the debates in the Federation Council and the State Duma, several speakers compared Georgia’s military action in South Ossetia to Hitler’s invasion of the Soviet Union in the Second World War. The dramatic rhetoric reinforced what many analysts here have been saying all along, that this conflict is less about the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkazia, than it is about Russia asserting its moral and military victory over US-backed Georgia.

In a poll taken by the Levada Centre in July, before the short war between Russia and Georgia, 62% of Russians said that the national interests of the US and Russian diverge in almost everything. Certainly, South Ossetia and Abkhazia are no exception. Many Russians feel particularly vindicated in supporting the independence of the breakaway regions because of the US and the West's support of Kosovo’s independence, which was deeply unpopular here.

As news of the parliament vote broke out, Georgia’s government shot back, calling the vote a continuation of aggression against Georgia. Georgia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Giga Bokeria told Reuters, “we considers this decision another in Russia’s fight against Georgian sovereignty… It is, and will be, if accepted by the Russian president, a continuation of Russian aggression against Georgia and a serious violation of international law.”

Now the world will be waiting and watching to see how the Kremlin responds to the vote.

Russia is back to its game of keeping the peace by keeping the pieces. I'm sure that the next step will be for both of these regions parliaments to ask to become part of the Russian federation much like the Baltic states through puppet parliaments asked to become part of the Soviet Union after the Ribbentrop Molotov pact of 1939. This is also their pay back for Kosovo.

the usa government should take a closer looks at its ties with countries that dont offer immediate support on an issue as clear and simple as this.

nato was formed for just such a reason and to let russia ,or any nation bully their way into another sovereign nation is just unthinkable and plays back to the warsaw pact days . nato needs to stand together and tell russia ,or china or whoever ,in no uncertain terms , that such actions are not acceptable ,and will NOT BE TOLERATED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES AND WILL BE MET WITH THE SAME APPROPRIATE FORCE AS IS NEEDED TO MAINTAIN THE STATUS QUO.

the pussyfoot tepid french/german/euro response will only lend credence the the russians' belief that they are plenty mighty enough nowadays to do whatever they want with impunity . hitlers germany was a very similar situation ; russia should be very closely watched and if military action is the only thing they will respond to then that is what nato should do , undivided and with no waste of time or footdragging.

it is a very dangerous precedent to set with a country that has a very large nuclear arsenal that is also run by and large by thugs ,mobsters and power grabbing industrialists ,to let them ruthlessly invade and loot a neighboring nation with no real punishment , all the while ignoring well established international policies and precedents ,as well as pleas from its neighbors to stop . it is obvious that russia will annex (on its own terms) both these regions very soon ,no matter what the rest of the world (or nato ) says. now i wonder, what/who will be next?

it was also very sad and disappointing to hear the russian political rhetoric and the overwhelming support for such nonsensical and illogical actions . the russian political system supports no form of true democracy, nver has and never will. they are too busy mindwashing their constituents into a nonsensical nationalistic fervor with state controlled rubbish media the same way it was in the warsaw pact days(and the same way it was in hitlers pre ww2 germany.)

if there is truly a cogent analogy to hitler and those times ,it is much more appropriate to russias actions both preceding and during the event than anything georgia or the usa did or could have done.

the official russian government program of passing out of border documents / russian government passports to large numbers of breakaway supporters is totally illegal under international law and must be stopped immediately.

this is the same kind of land grabbing that has gone on in the middle east for way too long and has to be stopped immediately, in israel/palestine as well as the rest of the world.

the tacit and patent support by the usa for israels' illegal occupation of palestine , as well as the illegal breakaway province of kosovo , is a slap in the fact of the russians and their regional status when the international community attempts to reign them in in such a tightly woven and very similar border dispute.

also ,according to recent reports, russia is now attempting the same strategy in the ukraine (passing out passports) and they will eventually use the same reasoning they invaded georgia with to invade whoever they choose.

the sad truth is this; the only way to deal with these russian thugs is with undivided international force. quit wasting time nato ,lay down the law ,enforce it strictly (and fairly).

russia does not rule georgia and has absolutely no business there . georgia should have been in nato long ago but nato was scared of the russian response to such an action and put it off .

russia saw a sweaty and fearful nato blink long and hard ...now look and see what is happening.

Russia is playing our game. How fitting. What goes around comes around. It just made me cringe hearing Rice scold the Russians about invading a sovereign nation. Gee, where did Putin get that idea?

bah, you spew out a bunch of blah. People in Abkhazia want indepedence, and people in South Ossetia just got shelled by Georgia. Russia is getting involved because of their interests, and as a counter to American imperialism. Ron Paul!
