Spacewalk Accomplished, China Sets Sights on the Moon

September 29, 2008 7:56 AM

By Stephanie Sy, ABC News Correspondent in Beijing

China has three new heroes and another reason to proclaim itself a rising world power.  Three Chinese astronauts received a heroes’ welcome Monday in Beijing after completing a mission in space that saw the nation’s first spacewalk.

Ap_china_space_080929_main Each step of the three-day mission was broadcast live on state television and viewed by millions of Chinese, who cheered when they saw Col. Zhai Zhigang step out of the hatch of the Shenzou 7 space ship for his 13-minute spacewalk.

U.S. and Russian astronauts had pulled off the same feat four decades ago, but that took none of the shine off China’s stroll in space. The Chinese called the successful spacewalk a “major breakthrough” toward their goal of building a space lab within five years.

In the view of many Chinese, the space agency’s strides symbolize China’s increasing dominance on the world stage, just as hosting the Olympic Games did. Seeing Zhai wave the Chinese flag as the Earth hovered below will continue to be a source of pride for many Chinese. The image appeared on the front page of every major Chinese newspaper the next day.

Chinese government officials and state-controlled media have focused on the fact that Zhai wore a Chinese-made spacesuit during the spacewalk. Indeed, experts say China’s Shenzou 7 spaceship was developed from homegrown technology, although with the benefit of studying the U.S. and Russian models that came before it.

“After we have successfully completed these three steps, we will go to even more remote areas,” said Wang Zhaoyao, deputy director of the manned spaceflight, to the Associated Press news agency.  “As long as we can make further progress…China will achieve the target of putting a manned spacecraft on the moon in the near future.”

It is China’s talk about putting a man on the moon that has NASA officials in the United States nervous. Chinese officials have said they will attempt a manned mission to the moon between 2015-2020, the same time frame President Bush has laid out for U.S. astronauts to return to the moon.

Of course, the United States is the only country to have put men on the moon, but that was nearly four decades ago, and it hasn’t repeated the feat since.

With China emerging as the U.S. largest economic rival, inevitable questions are arising about a future Cold War-style space race. That kind of talk may be premature. At face value, China’s space program seems eons away from rivaling NASA’s, but like its economy, its space ambitions have grown in leaps and bounds. And without the funding constraints that dog NASA, the Chinese Communist-controlled government could decide to pour more funds into the program at any time.

Chinese officials have repeatedly described their space endeavors as peaceful, seeking natural resources on the moon, for example. But regional powers such as India and Japan are also watching the space strides warily -- India, because, with the world’s second largest population, it may also want to mine the moon one day, and Japan, because it is worried about China’s military ambitions in space.

All of this cynical speculation is lost on the Chinese people. For a few days, people here can forget about the milk contamination scandal that has dominated the headlines, and stare in awe at their television screens—seeing their fellow countryman and comrade leave their footmarks on the final frontier.

Thanks to the US giving away all its jobs to China, the communist country is now able to fund space travel as we would have liked to do during the past 40 years. China will get to do what the US cannot do now. Thanks Bush

Well they certainly have the money to do so. We sent all of ours to them. They will get to the moon with our stolen technology as well. This from a country that 20 years ago had mostly standard screwdrivers...no power tools...not even speed-handles. Now they are going to the moon? Oh yeah, free trade works...for China. Thanks Mr. Bush.

Recent NASA funding cutbacks shows that our U.S. government doesn't care about the space industry, well until China puts a man on the moon. Then it will be NASA's fault cause China beat us.

maybe nasa can send some to the moon tomorrow so that we can forget about our crumbling financial system, for at least few days

Nobody panic! These guys just did something that the U.S. did in 1965, that's 43 years ago. None of this really bothers me...yet. Although the U.S. should be getting off our rears and getting our space program funded more. We now give about 0.6% of the national budget toward the entire NASA budget. A percentage of that is relegated to human space flight. It definitely should be much more. Before too many folks blame Bush for too much, it was Clinton that made a deal with the Chinese and sold them missile guidance technologies when he was at his desk with Monica. Everyone blames Bush doesn't have all the facts. True, he has not well funded NASA and has been glad-handing the agency since the inception of the Vision for Space Exploration. This is where you, the taxpayer come in. Write the White House, explain it to him. Explain it to Congress. Be part of the solution. If you take the time to gripe here, take that time to write your Congressman.

Who cares if the Chinese send astronauts to the moon before American do it again. Maybe we should take care of our earth and start improving our own peoples lifes instead of "shooting" for a "glory" stunt. We act like animals instead of civilized human beings - always hung up in competition thing instead of working together for the advancement of peace and prosperity for all.

..and if we are to listen to some we could just not be competitive humans (against nature) and sing "Kumbaya" and sit on this Earth and make it an Eden. Dream on. This is no longer about "glory" as some would post. It is now about mining and money. The Lunar surface and subsurface is full of rich minerals. All we need do is to fly the right materials there to begin to harness this and it will pay for itself sooner than later. Some really should read up on current events.

It is true that China was much poorer
30 years ago. But keep in mind that as
early as 1964, China blew off its first
nuk bomb follwed by the neutron/hydro
bombs. In 1971, the first satelite was
launched into the space even while the
country was in a political chaos of the
so-called culture revolution. All these
successes have shown not only the government-backed funding power, but also the Chinese marvellous ability to
study and create without outside aid. Over the past 50 years, the US has been
very careful not to let the Chinese share any of its space tech know-how. If China should be thankful to any country for starting the space programme, it is Russia or the formmer USSR. It is 100 pct blasphemous to say
China has stolen any major technology
from USA. Such talks smells only the
stupic arrogance of a few of the narrow-minded Americans who are so ignorant tha they never care to venture beyond their own horizons and show due respect
instead of jealousy and animosity to achievements made by other nations.Be open-minded and be friendly to your next-door neighbours and your neighbour sharing the Pacific with you!

There's a small error in there, the earth was hovering above instead of below, the error was so obvious to me as I have been watching it ten times over. The act of waving the flag was unpremeditated, the astronauts prepared the flag themselves, imagine...

Posted by: lbyau | Sep 29, 2008 7:54:04 PM

Yes, China has problems, don't you think US has problem also? Today we just got one, big one, Dow dropped 777 points! "The Chinese Communist-controlled government", do you really believe they are so-called "Communist"? Labeling them "Communist" or something else, whatsoever, does not help anything, -- capitalists are not doing anything better than "Communists", at lest right now.

If the chinese are planning on going to the moon around the same time as the U.S. why don't we just team up with them and go together? We could take the Russians and the British too, that way there wont be a war over the moon. If the expedition is funded by all said countries imagine the kind of base we could build. Even though we'd have to split any materials we mined it'd be a very small price to pay for the peace and discovery we'd gain.

China is the best! Go China!

Posted by: nacy | Sep 30, 2008 2:47:32 AM

Hey China, if indeed any Chinese person is allowed to view this web site. So what, America has been there and done that a long time ago. China to me is like the cry baby country who feels left behind and is trying so desperately to catch up to America (the pie in the sky) and overtake our position in the world. I hope they don't. What American wouldnt't? Hey folks, you need to do whatever you can at any opportunity available to not purchase Chinese made products. For an example at Lowes I paid $22 for two 50ft garden hoses vs two crappy $5 garden hoses made in China. I had the choice, yes it was more expensive but I do what I can. I'm not a hard core right winger conservative, I'm a lefty liberal, save the planet type voting for Barack/Biden. I just don't like China and what they're up to. Eff China!

This article by Stephanie Sy is yet another piece of anti-China propaganda. Note how the "nervous" NASA officials are not named, nor are their alleged comments quoted. In truth, most people at NASA are no doubt as proud of their Chinese colleagues as they should be. Also, where's the now-famous photo, showing the Chinese flag over the Earth? China is deservedly proud of their accomplishment. American journalists should be ashamed at their constant pandering to the idea that China is evil. It's Cold War b.s. all over again.
