Colin Powell Shows Off His Moves at Africa Festival

October 15, 2008 1:05 PM

By STEPHEN WEBB, ABC News London

Colin Powell may have risen to one of the highest and gravest positions in the world, but judging by his performance last night he isn’t afraid to get his groove on.

Nm_powell_081015_main The former U.S. secretary of state surprised audiences at the Royal Albert Hall in London yesterday evening when he joined a hip-hop group onstage, even taking the microphone at one point.

Powell, the first African American to serve as secretary of state, was attending the grand finale of the Africa Rising festival, a four-city, three-nation tour to raise awareness of "sustainable solutions" for Africa using music and fashion.

Nigerian group Olu Maintain were onstage when the retired general of the U.S. army joined them in a version of the Nigerian dance Yahoozee.

Despite the surprising dance appearance, Powell had a serious message to deliver, highlighting the importance of his black identity.

According to reports, he told the audience: "I stand before you tonight as an African-American."

"Many people have said to me, you became secretary of state of the U.S.A., is it still necessary to say that you are an African-American or that you are black, and I say, Yes, so that we can remind our children.”

"It took a lot of people struggling to bring me to this point in history. I didn't just drop out of the sky, people came from my continent in chains."

Powell spoke of wrongs done to Africa by Western powers and about the future of the continent.

According to reports, he told his audience: "Asia is expanding, it created jobs for people, and Eastern Europeans are doing the same... it's now Africa's turn."

Nduka Obaigbena, the organizer of Africa Rising, told the U.K. newspaper The Times: “I never thought I would see Colin Powell dance Yahoozee. He showed that common touch.”

Pop singer Christina Aguilera and soul singer Seal performed at the event. The showcase featured fashion collections from Ozwald Boatend and Deola Sagoe.

Colin Powell was born in New York City to Jamaican parents on April 5, 1937. As a general in the U.S. Army, he served as national security adviser from 1987-89. He was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989-93. Under President Bush, Powell was secretary of state from 2001-05.

terry with a small t, you must agree with me that hip-hop is not in the same league as classic rock, ask anyone who Jimmy Page is and the name will ring a bell, know ask anyone, who is Olu Maintain and they'll look at you and say "who" ? I'm right and you're wrong, I win !!!!!!

By that logic a Chevy Cavalier is a better car than a BMW 535 because more people have heard of the Chevy. That's plain stupid.

As much as i like Jimmy Page he's be the first to say quantity does not equal quality.

Big Daddy had a party. What is so wrong with that? He is no longer a representative of the Republican Party, no longer a representative of the government of the United States. As a private citizen, if he wanted to run naked down Wall Street, it's his right!

For a dancer, he would have made a great Vice Presidential pick. Seriously, Powell is great. I don't always agree with his views, but when he talks I don't feel as if I should be checking my back for knives or my wallet for missing money. I don't blame him for the UN fiasco. He was duped by Bush just as many of us were. As for reminding children of their heritage by calling them African American, I don't have a problem. My family has always emphasized our German and Danish heritage. As long as the children remember they are American first and they shouldn't never judge anyone else by their heritage, religion, etc. they should be fine. Remember what makes you special, but also remember what makes you the same as the rest of us....many people the world over hate all Americans, black, white, brown, yellow, red......doesn't matter.

He would of never done this display of immaturity if he was still in office, what an embarrisment to himself and to his family.

Gen. Powell getting his "groove" on? How funny - yet how real! It is funny to see a stanch military man dance - discipline and all that - but be FREE to be who you are before the world - to help CHANGE the world.

Bravo Gen. Powell!

It's important for children to also learn about the Black Slave Trade and that the white man wasn't the only culprit in the slave days. The stronger blacks put the weaker blacks into chains and sold or traded them too. As long as we keep looking back to where we have been we will keep walking into the walls. We need to look ahead and we can walk a round the wall and start healing this land we can change the future but the past is in the past. All slaves and owners are dead and gone So lets give the future to our kids and not the past we are all one race human we all bleed red.

Another person bringing up the fact that past people had slaves, I have some news for you, there are no more slaves !!! No one alive today has anything to do with slavery so DON'T let it surface again to keep it alive !!!1

Any bets on who Powell is voting for. I am sure it will not be the chosen one. Not sure it will be McCain either but they are good friends.

Anyway he should have been the one running for President not these others. McCain is the best of the bunch but he is not really the one we need, Powell would have been great. Too bad Maybe him and Palin or Rice next time. WE all know that Obama will be lucky to make 4 years with out impeachment.

Did he find any of the WMD's he promised us?

Posted by: The J | Oct 15, 2008 5:11:20 PM

Seems like the peeps on this board are cool with giving him a pass on the hours he spent testifying about Iraq's WMD's.

Paula, as an African, I would say that what you;re saying is true to some extent. The difference is that the Europeans engaged in slave rade on a massive sacle for economic reasons. The few misguided Africans who dabbled with this immoral behavior did it out of spite and revenge. It went like this: if an African was indebted to another African and was unable to repay his debt, the debtor would be sold in exchange for what he owed. You might say that this was foolish.

Yahoozee music is not a gangsta music, its a Nigerian song written in Yoruba language(Yoruba is one of Nigerian languages)
Those who do not understand the song should ask for the interpretation before condemning it.

Hi Marcus, here is one "black" person who would vote for John McCain. But, there is one problem: I have always been a great admirer of McCain as a "maverick." But lately, McCain has lost that unique quality, because he has been held captive by the neocon ultra conservative idiology. I would have voted for John McCain, but he has shown lack of good judgement because of his choice of a running mate.

MAY GOD BLESS AMERICA

davectrap, that was an African traditional dance, not gangstar rap. Know the difference

Posted by: what667 | Oct 15, 2008 5:30:50 PM

No place for this Bush apologist in the Obama cabinet.

VOTE FOR CHUCK BALDWIN!!!!

Posted by: you you you know it! | Oct 15, 2008 6:05:26 PM

Can you imagine if Barack Osama gets elected this is the kind of moves we will have on the WHITE HOUSE lawn. I have always voted Democrat but because of the color of this guy I will vote McCain. I mean come on folks its the WHITE HOUSE

Posted by: Karl | Oct 15, 2008 6:38:48 PM

Marcus, an AA Navy vet told me he plans to vote for McCain, because he has republican views and likes McCain's support for the troops. As a Navy vet, he explained to me: McCain is in the best position to do the right thing in Iraq and bring the troops home. McCain is the more moderate candidate, who shares his political views. Freedom and America's wellbeing are something McCain cares about, which is why he put solving our financial crisis ahead of his debate preparation. While McCain suffered alot of backlash and grief for his support on the economic crisis and on a personal level it was a risky move, McCain's actions have proven over the years that McCain is a good leader so we need to vote for McCain. He was somewhat concerned that some AAs might vote based on a skin-color match.

IF Powell endorses Obama it is 100% absolutely about RACE. Period.

Posted by: reallyirked | Oct 15, 2008 7:20:39 PM

If Colin Powell votes for Obama it is a 100% about logic. Being logical is what he is known and respected for. I'm glad to see he was Dancing and having a great time.Colin Powell is a centrist, go to the Website and there he is. A moderate, nothing extreme about him.

President Obama will mandate dancing lessons in public schools with an emphasis on hip-hop and krump. Square dancing and swing will only be offered thru private church based organizations, to preserve their place in history as a cultural oddity.
