Free Knife With Your Hoodie?

October 03, 2008 11:51 AM

By EMILY WITHER, ABC News London

Knife_jacket_081003_mainA jacket being sold in Britain has sparked controversy after a shopper discovered it came with a free built-in pocket knife.

The British high street chain T.K.Maxx specializes in budget clothing and had been stocking the $105 hooded coats that had a 2.5-inch blade on the end of a chain concealed in an inner pocket.

Shopper Steve Gale discovered the sharp end of fashion when he found one of the coats on sale at the store.

He told the U.K. newspaper the Sun: “I pulled the chain and out came this knife. I couldn’t believe it. It was actually part of the coat. Imagine how you would feel if you bought that for your kid.”

The store is now being heavily criticized for appearing to promote knives as a fashion accessory, at a time when the murder rate among teenagers is on the rise. However, T.K.Maxx denies it even knew the coats came with knives attached.

Gale condemned the hoodie while talking to the Sun, “What has it come to when clothes become weapons? It’s just encouraging kids to go out with a knife.”
But is this an overreaction and just a sign of the times?

The rise in knife crime and gang culture has been making headlines in Britain throughout the year, creating a culture of fear in this country when it comes to knives.

The murder rate is on the rise. So far this year 27 teenagers have been stabbed to death in London, compared with 26 for 2007. Scotland Yard has said that tackling knife crime has become its “No. 1 priority.”

However, the coat was made in Switzerland, a place where these types of knives are readily available and still viewed as a useful tool. The country also doesn’t suffer from Britain’s growing problem of teenage knife crime.

The mistake has drawn particular criticism as about a year ago, one of T.K.Maxx’s sales assistants was stabbed to death on the shop floor, according to the U.K. newspaper the Daily Mail.

T.K.Maxx, a sister company of America's T.J. Maxx, claims that it had no idea that the Swiss-branded coats came with a knife and that is has now removed the jackets from its shelves.

A  T.K.Maxx representative told ABC News that “recently we became aware that a Swiss-branded coat on sale in store included a pocket penknife as a promotional gift. Once aware of this issue, we followed all necessary procedures to remove the items swiftly from the supply chain.”

The representative added that the store “supports and enforces all laws with regard to the sale of knives.”

Questions remain about how the store did not know it was selling a coat with a penknife.

And so many people think the Brits have class.

So people are committing crimes with Victorinox Swiss Army folders, now? Huh. I still use mine for sectioning apples, opening mail, cutting twine, etc.

Guess I'm just too "Old School."

AWESOME! Now all they need to include in a handy-dandy pair of nylons (to pull over your face) and you have an all-in-one terrorist package to purchase. It's a bank heist waiting to happen. Although...a gun would've been a bit more convenient.

Don't be retarded! A knife is not a "murder weapon" or an instrument of violence unless the person holding it makes it so! A Swiss army knife is an innocent tool like any other. This is the most absurd news story I've seen all week.

They will soon ban knives followed by rocks etc...

Posted by: louiville2 | Oct 3, 2008 3:18:40 PM

The guy who complained about the jacket did not have to buy it. Pocket knives are common tools. England is on a slippery slope, first guns where illegal now they are working on knives, soon they will have to pick up all the small rocks...

Every day I carry a Swiss army knife in my left pocket, and it is the handiest little device for opening letters, turning screws, and pulling out staples. I love it.

I had a boy scout knife growing up, and guess what? I managed to not kill anyone with it. We certainly have become a nation of wusses. How many stories have any of you read where a child killed another child with their handy dandy boy scout knife? Isn't a steak knife longer than a boy scout blade? Maybe we should all eat with our hands from now on and ban all utensils. You know, just in case we get the urge to stab someone.

Oh please! Give it up! Some people are really paranoic! Next time they will come with condoms...just in case.

Posted by: Oh please! | Oct 3, 2008 4:06:53 PM

What an over reaction. Brits are so neurotic they see an elephant where there is a small dog. Those little SA knives barely open a package of gummy bears. Then again, I am reminded this comes from a country that if the guy that robs and beats you to a pulp slips on your blood and hurts himself, you will go to jail for assaulting him. GB has greater social issues than clothing accessories.

Yay! Lets demonize knives like we did guns because lord knows knives are EVIL! EVIL I SAY!!

Wankers. That's what happens when you're a subject and not a citizen.

In the state of Missouri, a knife is considered a weapon. Students as young as five can be expelled from attending any pubic school in the state for one calendar year if caught with a knife, even a parry knife.

Knives may be fine for adults but they are not toys and not for children.

cool marketing...I don't see a problem wit these...I had a few swiss army knives when I was a kid...had guns and knives since I was about 9 years old...never killed anybody...and DMR, I've known many a Brit, and I have to say that they DO have a lot of class...

Posted by: Jazz | Oct 3, 2008 4:14:59 PM

seriously? .. these are swiss army knives!?!? ... this is way overboard ...

Posted by: yve2008 | Oct 3, 2008 4:23:59 PM

I really enjoyed my visit to London and and surrounding areas, where most of the people I met seemed polite. I had no idea that it was such a violence entrenched country that normal people are not allowed to have even benign pocket knives. I feel much safer here in mid west USA where people can own and carry guns and knives.

Posted by: TXPDelta | Oct 3, 2008 4:30:58 PM

Big deal. Got my first knife when I entered Boy Scouts when I was 8.
It's not like they were throwing in a free Sword

Posted by: It's a Knife! | Oct 3, 2008 4:43:33 PM

@MCJ...THANK YOU! This is the dumbest crap I've heard since "the fundamentals of our economy are strong." Of all the things to get angry over (lack of dental care) the Brits decide to get mad at the Swiss Army Knife...you can open a can with it for crying out loud!

Posted by: quest2010 | Oct 3, 2008 4:45:26 PM

Sad.

Unfortunately, the men that have lost their country no longer have balls. So now I guess this knife's only use is for insane ABC propaganda. Oh, and cutting present tape with those cute little sissors.

How do you go from a country that had the wonderful claymore, to one that fears a 2" blade? I guess a little bit at a time.

Grow some,
Jim

What sensationalist rubbish. You'd think they'd be offering a 6.5" trench knife with the fear mongering nonsense people are spouting.

Posted by: SirGeorge | Oct 3, 2008 5:05:22 PM

Folding pocket knives like Swiss army knives with a blade of 3 inches or less are actually legal in the UK. The media here ALWAYS neglects to mention this little fact in their fear-mongering stories about knives in Britain. I'm an American living and working in the UK, and it drives me insane how anal the British are about knives. Granted, the kids here are VERY violent and out of control, but the cause is their poor social upbringing rather than 'knife culture.' When you live here as long as I have, you come to appreciate America's 'right to bear arms'. I used to be 100% against guns, but after living in the UK so long, I can see how the right to bear arms and defend oneself is an effective and important if not necessary protection against a tyrannical or overbearing Nanny State. The Founding Fathers of America knew what they were doing when they penned the right to bear arms (against the British!).

Posted by: GC | Oct 3, 2008 6:37:59 PM

I guess it's funny for you guys to read about this, but I live in the UK and can tell you we have a real problem with young kids and knife crime. Over 30 kids have died in London this year, some from attacks involving smaller weapons then the knives being sold with this jacket. Some of the victims have been as young as 13, it is also illegal in this country to sell a knife of any kind to a minor, so TK Maxx is in breach of UK law.
and for the record, the jackets have not " been withdrawn immediately" they are still on sale in many stores.

mine came with a glock and i love it.

Posted by: Paul | Oct 3, 2008 7:31:58 PM

i'm not a member of the NRA and am actual very liberal, i'm opposed to gun control. maybe if we didn't have that right we would be excited about small-size swiss army knives. i want whatever it takes to get me home and keep me alive. i would love a swiss army knife in my hoodie. for free? why complain, just sell it to someone who wants one, or donate. please don't get an ulcer.

Posted by: Paul | Oct 3, 2008 8:06:07 PM

Knives are tools. People are murdered by kitchen knives or box cutters and utility knives. NOT pocket knives. I carry a pocket knife every day (mostly Spyderco or Victorinox) and they are very useful. I have no idea how people get along without a knife daily. God didn't give me claws or long k9 teeth like a tiger so I have used my brain to figure out it's a good thing to have a tool like a knife on hand for a variety of things.

Posted by: David | Oct 3, 2008 8:12:48 PM

Come on Brits. This tempest in a teapot is like something we Americans would contrive. A Swiss Army knife is hardly a murder weapon. A person inclined to commit murder with a knife would be much more apt to do it with a steak knife swiped from the family kitchen instead of this little toy.
