Could You Be the World's Biggest Liar?
November 20, 2008 11:05 AM
BY LINDA ALBIN, Radio Correspondent, ABC News London
I was prepared to give it a go…so here I am…sitting on the beach of a hot, tropical island…the waves lapping. Just a simple lie will do to get me into the world’s Biggest Liar Championship.
It’s a tradition that goes back more than a century in the days where there were no TVs or radios or computers.
Andrew Carter, a former winner, has the secret to success – “If you can keep it short and sweet, a little joke now and again” does the trick, he says.
Former winners include the one about the 9-foot cod killed with a barrel of beer and bubble-oh-seven’s underwater adventures.
Interestingly, most contestants are men…leading one to believe they are natural-born liars.
NOTE: The event takes place tonight
VENUE: The Bridge Inn, Britain’s Lake District
Prize: $37 and a silver trophy that the winner keeps for a year
History: Dates back to the 1800s when pub owner Will Ritson entertained folks with his tall tale of turnips as big as sheds
