Actress Mirren Makes Controversial Rape Comments

November 18, 2008 8:40 AM

By Emily Wither, ABC News London

Actress Dame Helen Mirren, famously known for playing the queen, is up to mischief again. No stranger to controversy, she once said she'd been raped but never bothered to report it. She’s now lashed out at female jurors in rape cases for believing the victims ask for it.

In an interview with the Sunday Times magazine, the Oscar-winning actress said that "women go against women" in court, blaming it on "sexual jealously."

Dame Helen said during the interview that when it came to rape cases, the defense wants to select as many women as it can for the jury.  "Other women on a rape case would say she was asking it."

During the interview Dame Helen appeared to shift from loving women to loathing them in just a matter of seconds. She declared her love for women over men before going on to say that she’d prefer to be interviewed by male journalists because when it comes to females, she knows "there  is a little stiletto knife hidden behind the back. "

Mirren used the rape trial as an example when discussing female competitiveness, but her opinion on the topic could say a lot more about her own experiences. In an earlier interview with GQ magazine,  Mirren said she’d been date raped  "a couple of times, but not with excessive violence."

At the time,  she angered rape victim advocates for saying there wasn’t much point reporting  rape  to the police because it was "a tricky area." Campaigners have called her latest comments ‘incredibly destructive’ and they're concerned it may have an effect on victims coming forward.

But some believe Helen has just brought to light some uncomfortable home truths. Speaking to Sky News, Sandra McNeill of the Campaign to End Rape said it was "a well-known fact" that lawyers representing rapists try to get a female-dominated jury.

Polls taken on the subject of rape have highlighted that many believe a victim has to take responsibility for being attacked if they are drunk or wear revealing clothing.

However, Britain’s solicitor general, Vera Baird, has accused Mirren of being ignorant, swiftly pointing out that juries are selected at random in the United Kingdom.

It looks like whether onscreen or off, the 63-year-old national treasure has yet again caused quite a stir. ABC News tried to contact Mirren’s rep, but they were unavailable for comment.

God bless Helen!

She has the guts to state this un-PC reality inspite of the rage that will be thrown upon her.

My girlfriend was raped by her neighbor and the rat was acquited due to some ridiculous reasonable doubts raised by the defence counsel.

I will never forget the stern faces of the women on the jury. The prosecutor heard after the trial that all the men voted to convict but it was the women who hung the jury.

No woman/man asks to be raped. When someone says no, they mean no. Just because they might look a certain way (i.e. dressed immodestly)or act a certain way does not mean they want to be attacked. I don't care who it is. It could be a woman well known for being promiscuous or a boy who just happens to be very friendly. I don't think that it falls mostly on women who are attacked, I think personally that men/boys are raped just as often, but are not likely to report it due to possible backlash or afraid to because of the stereotypes placed on the male sex. (Men are supposed to be macho, so on and so forth) It saddens and angers me to no end about how some people still think in the sense of "oh he/she got raped - they asked for it." Again, NOBODY asks for rape.

Laurie for you all men are rapists and molesters and need to be destroyed as long as a woman who is always the victims as far as you are concerned.

In your world all men except your father and brothers and sons are rapists and wife beaters

i have to agree with helen, woman is always the first to say she ask for it they are always ready to blame the victim,

Posted by: simplecake | Nov 18, 2008 2:22:42 PM

So I suppose false accusations are never made and no women ever makes a false accusation?

Posted by: jon | Nov 18, 2008 2:24:13 PM

AS someone who was raped at 18 & had a baby from the incident....I did not ask for it. I will say, when I let my mind go back there, that I had no business where I was or trusting a man 10 years older or being alone with him. Girls should ALWAYS stay in groups!!!!

I think the thing we have to remember is the idea that woman are harder on other woman as a self defense mechanism. That way they can say as long as i never dress like that, as long as i never go to that part of town, as long as i dont drink like that ... i wont be raped. This is not true but it leads people to think that as long as they dont do "those things' that wont get raped.

she is right, they do ask for it

And men are not biased against men in these situations???!! I beg to differ.

The male judges were jerks , if it were not for the female judges and child experts, she would have never admitted that she made up the whole story and I would have been branded a pervert for life.

This is not about women being unfair to other women this is about being unbiased and ensuring that justice is served.

Its about being professional and that is why I always insisted on a woman representing me in my divorce and for these sick false allegations

Posted by: jon | Nov 18, 2008 2:34:22 PM

NO ONE ASKS TO BE RAPED!!! THAT'S SICK

Posted by: jon | Nov 18, 2008 2:36:09 PM

"Men let things roll off their back." wow, you must be kidding! never hear of domestic violence? stalking? the crime of rape in general? acid attacks in India and Pakistan? women (but not men) stoned to death for adultery under far-right Islam? statistics show that the most likely person to murder a woman is her husband or boyfriend. face it, men AND woman are sometimes fallible, selfish and mean.

She is right !! So her comments are controversial ...they are TRUE !! She is direct and honest . Is that out of style now ???

Women do have a nasty tendency to backstab.

And if rape victims were "asking for it," then men who are stabbed or mugged while walking through a dark alley or sketchy neighborhood should have known better, and the perpetrators should be acquitted for wrongdoing. Because, you know, the darkness did it. The poverty did it. Not the criminal.

she is being politically correct , a publicity stunt.

If she said the opposite she would stand accused of betraying the sisterhood.

I was falsely accused of Domestic Violence as well when is was proven that I was actually the victim of years of continual domestic violence in front of our children

As far as MILF's go. . . or should I say GILF's, she can't hold a candle to Raquel Welch.

No woman asks to be raped, just as no man asks to be mugged. But it goes as follows:

A man is walking down an alley with an ipod in one ear and cell phone in the other in a burberry over coat and oakley glasses. What is he doing? He's making himself a target. He is a priming himself TO BE A VICTIM. He didn't ask to mugged or attacked, but the circumstances he put himself in put him in danger to begin with. This is why no one is surprised when a college student gets mugged in the Fenway in Boston; because he basically set himself up as a target.

New scenario:
A 22-year-old girl puts on her shortest skirt and halter top to go out to the club. She grabs her cell phone, wallet and keys and tosses them in her purse and she and her friends go out for a night of dancing. She leaves the club alone after drinking. Now, she is drunk, alone, at night, in a short skirt and small top. What is she doing? She's making herself a target, either for the guy who offers to drive her home, or a random attack.

In both these scenarios, there are options that both parties could have done to protect themselves better. Neither of them "asked to be made a victim." But BOTH of them could've protected themselves better.

I am a dude, so I will not dare touch this one even with a 10 foot pole.

Research from as far back as the 1980' shows that male jurors see themselves in the role Protector and want to send the rapist to jail to bring justice to the victim and "save" her. Women, on the other hand, cannot face the fact that rape is random, reason-less and not within their control, and therefore must find a reason it happened to the victim. Of course, these feelings are for the most part subconcious, but in doing in-depth studies of jurors of rape cases, these findings have been found again and again. It is a well-known fact that defense lawyers in rape cases try to seat women-heavy juries for that reason.

same old same, it's true.

Many women hold up other women, girls to a higher standard then males. It's a kind of reverse sexism in that females are supposed to be better than that - in charge. Therefore when it breaks down it surely must be due to something the female did wrong or ineptly.

women need to be more supportive of one another.

What she says is all too sad and even sadder is that it is true.

Posted by: bckrd1 | Nov 18, 2008 3:30:37 PM

Does being supportve being biased and just accepting the accusation because it is being made by a 'sister'?

Identity politics

what about finding out what really happened in a professional manner and judging based on facts - not on gender politics and biases

Posted by: jon | Nov 18, 2008 3:30:54 PM

If this is true, and it sounds like many of you think it is. If a trend can be proven, women should never be allowed to serve on rape case juries because they can't be objective.

Posted by: Present | Nov 18, 2008 3:35:07 PM

Some of you in the 'sisterhood' of accepting the word of a sister just because she is a sister will have brothers, fathers, sons -some of whom one day will be falsely accused of rape or DV.

A bit like when Bill was accused of some of those things - and what did that women's movement do - it gave him a pass because he was doing their bidding ans was Hilary's husband

Its a politics - justice has little to do with it

Posted by: dan | Nov 18, 2008 3:35:56 PM

Present that would be the conclusion that an objective person might draw - that women as a gender are not capable of judging facts in an objective fashion and so should not be allowed to be judges etc.

the whole thing is self serving and ridiculous and comes down to Mirren being sexist against other women

Posted by: jon | Nov 18, 2008 3:39:48 PM

Women do not ask to be raped!! I was raped & I did not say, hey come & get it.
