Israel Closes Gaza to Foreign Press

November 11, 2008 8:53 AM

By Simon McGregor-Wood, Correspondent & Bureau Chief, ABC News Jerusalem

For almost a week foreign journalists have been blocked from entering Gaza. It has become very frustrating.

Here’s some background. The 6-month-old cease-fire between Israel and Hamas is under threat.

Last week Israel launched what it called a pre-emptive strike toward a tunnel being built by Palestinian militants near the Gaza border. It was the first incursion by Israeli military forces since the cease-fire came into effect in June. Seven Palestinians were killed in the firefight.

Hamas responded with salvos of homemade rockets fired into Israel. It was a depressingly familiar cycle.

The Israeli authorities then shut down the checkpoints leading into Gaza and until Monday night cut off fuel supplies. But until now this closure had never applied to journalists.

The Israeli Ministry of Defense spokesman Shlomo Dror told ABC News today, “The passage [into Gaza] is open only to urgent humanitarian cases. No one else can go in.”

The Israeli authorities have usually kept access to the Gaza Strip open to foreign journalists even in times of intense fighting.

On Monday the Foreign Press Association in Israel issued a statement protesting the closure: “It is absolutely essential that international journalists be allowed to enter the territory and deliver their news reports to Israel and the rest of the world. The Israeli government has offered no plausible explanation for the extended lockdown and current hostilities need not preclude movement of journalists.”

I am trying to work out why the policy changed. Dror told me, “It’s not a policy decision. We have reduced the number of staff at the checkpoint by a half and there is ongoing violence nearby. Last night for example an RPG [rocket-propelled grenade] was fired close to Erez.”

But why now, I wonder? In times of far greater violence the checkpoint has always remained open.

Dror recommended that the foreign press rely on the reports of Palestinian journalists based inside Gaza. This was a strange suggestion because Israeli authorities have always accused Palestinian journalists of bias.

Several foreign correspondents I have spoken to suspect Israel wishes to prevent us from covering the worsening conditions inside Gaza. Hamas has proved adept at making the most of the hardships caused by Israel’s closure and the lack of basic supplies. Israel accuses Hamas of exaggerating the problems.

On Monday night the main power station in Gaza shut down because of a lack of fuel. As before, groups of Palestinians including children were then filmed and photographed on the streets holding candles during the ensuing blackouts. Israel has accused Hamas of arranging these images for propaganda purposes.

Veteran French TV correspondent Charles Enderlin told me today that he is convinced Israeli authorities are trying to keep the foreign press out of Gaza.

“For sure they do not want us in there. To me it’s obvious they don’t want us to show what is going on inside,” he said.

It is sometimes difficult to know just how bad the humanitarian situation inside Gaza is and there is definitely scope for exploiting the situation for political purposes.

But for the time being it seems I won’t be able to see for myself.

Hamas can help their own people's poverty by agreeing to peace. But they have choosen violence over the welfare of their people.

Why do we support Israel? It's time for an audit!

Take Isreal Army out of the Gaza strip and West Bank, and they will know peace... Occupy them like Iraq, and they will fight their occupation, degridation and humiliation. Leave Iraq and the violoence will go down as well. But there is that pesky thing about all of those military bases and oil pipelines that we just can't allow into the hands of the Iraqi's. I mean come on, it's not like it's THEIR country or anything. It will remain as a client state/outpost for the US and Isreal or it will not exist at all. No matter how many Irais or Americans, or British must/will die.

Sandy shut up, you have no clue what goes on over there and you have even less of an idea about the atrocities committed by those dirty jews. And no you hooker, watching CNN, ABC, Fox or any other news station does not make you an "expert". And the garbage that most churches preach of Israel, well, it is exactly that...GARBAGE.

Hamas exploits the Palestinians living in Gaza and on the West Bank for its own purposes, not for the betterment of the Palestinian people. Israel has the right to defend herself against incursions of Hamas militants who cross the border between Gaza & Israel, whether they cross it above, or underground. The Israelis discovered a tunnel being dug by Hamas from Gaza into Israel & they destroyed it. All Hamas & Hezbollah have to do is sincerely enter into a lasting peace with Israel acknowledging Israel's right to exist. Israel made the desert bloom and brought productivity to the area. Just think how the Palestinian people would prosper and benefit from peace between them and the Israelis instead of feeding its youth on bitterness instead of hope. Hamas offers Palestinian youth nothing but Paradise after they blow themselves up. Why not offer them education and jobs and industry and technology and a better standard of living, devoid of envy of the people across the border in Israel?

"Veteran French TV correspondent" Charles Enderlin is known for his manipulating stories (http://www.camera.org/index.asp?x_context=3&x_outlet=167&x_article=1137) and has been sued in France for false and malicious reporting that makes Israel the villain for protecting their citizens.
I hope ABC's reporters can be less biased and explain that the closure of Gaza is due to "depressingly familiar" terrorist attacks meant to kill Israeli civilians.

I don't know why the reporters are blocked and I think that it's a bad policy. Yes we know (it has been proven numerous times) that the Hamas is manipulating the media in the same way the Hezbolla does (proved too), but blocking the access of the journalists is, nevertheless a counter productive move. This said, Charles Enderlin's "reports" are subject to caution. The report he made of a father and child being fired upon by the Israeli army until the death of the child, which was seen around the world and sparked the second intifada, has been proved to be a staged hoax a few months ago, when the French court finally got to see the rushes. The man has, single handedly, started a bloody war and destroyed all the progress made towards peace until then in that region, just for a chance at a scoop, and you'd trust what he says?

When committing atrocities one wants as few eyewitnesses as possible. Blocking international media access was the logical next step, so I don't understand why people are acting surprised that it has happened. What did people expect, Israelis committing their atrocities on pay-per-view?

The humanitarian situation inside Gaza is bad only because of the hamas. why to heat the jews? the jews are our brother. stop the hamas.

It is obvious that Hamas and Hizballah alike only engage in "peace fires" to allow themselves to re-supply their arsonals and build infrastructures for waging war. In effect "Peace Fire" is just another tactic in their war manual. Digging the tunnel is just another example.
I very much doubt the American people and govt would have a mustard seed of restraint in comparison to Isreal if we were to endure ongoing attacks from our neighbors. Their military should just route them all to Syria and be done with it already!

i think its time we stop diving israel or else were doomed joel chapter 3 in the end times nations will divide my land and shall be punished for doing so thus the reasons for these floods and hurricanes and stock market crashes time to give the land back to the jews like its suppose to be cause if not the judgement of God will distroy our land but america isnt in the bible so i dont think were goin to exsist in the future will probably join other countrys and not b american anymore think im making this up well just wait a few more years or so the bible doesnt lie :-)

I think it's up to Israel to decide how best to defend itself against Hamas, which seeks to commit genocide. Closing the border and keeping out biased propagandists like Charles Enderlin seems like a smart move. And why all the focus on Israeli border controls, anyway? Doesn't Gaza have a border with Egypt, too? Why doesn't anyone complain about them not allowing in journalists?

Posted by: fes2inmi | Nov 11, 2008 1:31:04 PM

Since we're already spending trillions on bailouts and in two wars. Let's just build a new city named Palestine, Iraq in Iraq, with nice new homes and infrastucture.
Allow any and all peaceful people living in Gaza that truly want to live in peace transportation to move in.
Then the Hamas radicals that want to stay and continue to fight can have the fate they deserve.
As far as the argument that people would be made to leave their land, that happens everyday here in the USA, it's called "foreclosure", and it's happened to my family. I'm not terrorizing the people who now live in my house on my 120 acres of land.
It's less about the land and more about their idealogy. Help the innocent people they hide behind to get out.

OCCUPATION??? NO nation would would tolerate what the Israelis have. Hamas brutally seized Gaza from the PA not long ago. Guess what?? Hordes of Palestinians STREAMED to the Israeli border, begging to be let in, running from their REAL occupiers. Islamic Terror is extant today in over 16 nations around the world--Israel is merely at the front line. The Palestinians chose terror over peace and Hamas gave a green light to anyone to kill and maim Israeli citizens. If you had missiles sent into San Diego from Tijuana, I'll tell you what the U.S. would do--they'd drop a few daisy cutters in the marketplace and you'd never have that again. Islam preys on western restraint....the Israelis have lost countless soldiers by trying to avoid civilian casualties, while Hamas/Hizbollah and the rest of the nutty groups that keept the Palestinians in infinite poverty hide amongst the civilian population. If they didn't have Israelis to murder, they would murder each other--and their groups DO!! Now you have Hamas in control--the Israelis pulled out TOTALLY. Hamas destroyed the greenhouses that used to produce huge quantities of vegetables, replacing them with missile launchers. "MUSLIM TERROR" is a REDUNDANCY today

Maybe we should reconsider why we support Israel. The corruption that has power in the world now will surely be our undoing. Time for some global head chopping. The leaders of the world need to have their feet held to the fire.

Israel is a country of cowards.

if i remember right gaza had an election, the people chose hamas to lead them, the usa and israel said no no you have it wrong you cant vote for hamas we dont like them. you need to stick with the corrupt plo cause they are our buddies.the legally elected hamas kicked their corrupt asses out.end of story.......democracy is dead.

The government of Israel is trying to work forward with the Fatah. The Fatah and Israel have had strained relationships over the years, however both have used restraint and diplomacy to at least keep dialogue going.

Let us not forget that this is the Hamas. The Hamas has held rallys and made statements which have shown their willingness to engage in genocide and commit crimes against humanity. One can see where the Hamas would be if they were given greater autonomy. If Hamas were Israel we would already have had another genocide event such as those being prosecuted today by the International war crimes courts. The Hamas’s doctrine is full of statements of genocide and crimes against humanity. The Fatah itself has denounced the Hamas and the Hamas's genocidal stance. Peace is possible with Fatah and Isreal, however the Hamas poisons the minds of the Palestinian people, causing the disruption in the progression of Palestinian statehood with Fatah at the helm. Many Israelis and Palestinians today realize the oneness of Palestine and Israel and the importance of peace for both sides for either side to enjoy success as well as tranquility.
