Pakistan: No Orders for Troops to Move East

December 26, 2008 12:57 PM

By NICK SCHIFRIN and HABIBULLAH KHAN, ABC News Islamabad

Pakistani defense officials tell ABC News that an Associated Press report claiming 20,000 troops are moving from Pakistan's western border to the eastern border with India is not correct.

They claim that the military is undergoing regular, scheduled rotations, and that if an AP reporter saw trucks moving out of a tribal area, those troops were on a scheduled rotation, and not acting under new orders.

But as we reported a few days back, the Pakistani military is moving relatively small amounts of troops around to reinforce its border with India.

Some troops have been skimmed from the ongoing operation in Swat to go to the east, officials tell us. Some troops scheduled to go to the Northwest Frontier Province to fight the Taliban from the Punjab province in the east have been told to stay where they are. And the military has cancelled any scheduled leaves for all troops.

The air force is on high alert, and pilots are in their combat gear 24/7, officials say.

Neither government wants war but tension has increased considerably between the two nuclear armed countries that have fought three wars.

As Samina Ahmed, the International Crisis Group's Pakistan country director, puts it: "The potential for this particular situation turning more serious cannot be underestimated."

India is the biggest ally of the terrorists. When we invaded Afghanistan after 9/11, India massed a million soldiers on Pakistan's borders, forcing Pakistan to leave the Afghan border unguarded thus providing an escape route to the terrorists. Now that Pakistan is making a concerted effort against thes escaped terrorists, India is again threatening Pakistan and forcing Pakistan to divert its resources to the bigger menace it faces from India. If India is our ally, then they don't look too different from our enemies!

Gee it's a first. One of our 'allies' NOT doing something to undermine the "war on terror." Don't worry though, Israel is threatening to start a war over a few ineffective rocket attacks.

Oh and BTW, shouldn't the US G be the final word on this. I mean #*$& we spent $60 billion on satellites and communication interception this yr. Doesn't Dubya knoew if Pakis are transporting troops East??

Pakistan should welcome either the USA or India trying to surgically remove the cancer of terrorism from Pakistan. It is called getting a guest/friend to take care of your snake. Just like the unmanned US planes have successfully destroyed terrorist hideouts inside Pakistan, India could do the same. This way Pakistan can with the hare and hunt with the hound, a game it has played very well in the past.

Dear Neighbour, I would be grateful if you could nurture two pots of curry leaves.Thank you very much

I feel sorry for citizens of Pakistan, who have no expectation from their government. They should look at their neighbor India and see all the progress India has made in last 60 years of independence. Also citizens of US and world should understand that Pakistan is not really helping fight AlQaeda. It is a charade. The cooperation in last 5-6 years has been none to marginal. To be honest I do not feel it is lack of intent from Pakistan, it is the lack of any solid institution or commitment from Pakistan. They do not have building block of anything not even military. So even if the military establishment want , they would not be able to offer much help. These tactics from Pakistan to move military on their eastern border is just a way for Pakistan to take focus away from any other positive news. This is just to take attention away from absolutely any hope for any process in any area science, economics, society or politics.

@ Matter of fact

India was forced to move troops on Pakistan border both occassions because of attacks by terrorists comming from Pakistani soil. So stop making wild allegations. You need to remember that Pakistan is fighting proxy war by sending terrorists in India.

Everyone knows and even the US has been experiencing that Pakistan is a fertile ground for hatred and terrorism against the west and the east. Indians were sincere and thought the Americans would put pressure on their "friends in war on terror" to rein in terrorists and dismantile the breeding camps. Instead of doing that we see that the US is running with the hare and hunting with the hound. Sen. John Kerry used the occasion to encourage the rogue Pak military by offering funds and even upgrading the Nuclear Bomb carrying capability on the fighter jets. They disappointed tand embarrased the Indians, especially the Government of Dr. Singh, who stood to develop the strategic relationship with the US. The only functioning democracy in the region is India. Democracy in Pakistan is a sham. In spite of all these, Pakistanis are made to pause an aggressive posture against Indians in spite of their involvement in the recent Mumbai attack.

=====================
UNITED WE STAND

Friday, December 26, 2008
The unanimous resolution in the National Assembly on Wednesday, condemning the war-hype created by India, urging it to dismantle terrorist networks and warning that the people of Pakistan stand united behind their government and army against any aggression is welcome. The fact that all parliamentary parties have signed the resolution comes as a welcome sign of national unity. There had been concern over the fact that, till now, this had seemed absent with the PML-N, for instance, launching an anti-government offensive that coincided with the unveiled threats by India. But there are matters that went unaddressed within the resolution. One of these is the need to fight the many terrorist groups that exist within our midst. There can be no denying that these forces have caused havoc across the country. The ludicrous statement by the Tehrik-e-Taliban that it is ready to defend the country against India makes no sense given its own involvement in carving away large chunks of Pakistani territory for itself and its professed aim to forcibly impose its own version of Shariah law. For our own sake, rather than that of India or anyone else, we must eradicate these groups. Indeed our failure to do so in the past is one factor behind the crisis we are facing today.

Perhaps the issue of internal terrorism was not brought up in the NA to avoid creating a rift and dividing the parties. This is understandable. At this point in time we need accord. But the fact also is that the issue of terror needs to be squarely faced up to. There is no point burying our head. It is also true there are groups, both in parliament and in other places, that continue to defend extremist forces, insisting that they promote religious ideals. This fiction needs to be exposed for the lie that it is. The government must take a strong stand, offer details about the activities of various groups and make it clear that it intends to launch an offensive against them. If it plays its cards with acumen, it will be able to win support from people. The united front forged against India is a good first step. We must now work to build similar unity against the enemies that threaten us internally.

From the all the war ships of so many nations in the Indian ocean chasing pirates. ..Us in Iraq and Afganistan chasing terrorists. . Israel in the Gaza..India and Pakistan..One can only guess what may happen next...On the whole this is the most troop movement in the middle east maybe in our life time...

what kind of army does Pakisan has. It has stationed a million troops on the afghan border and yet there is no visible success on war on terror? if this is the way, i think we will be better off with no army.instead try to use the money in improving infrastructure and economy within united states.

It is important to understand the stakes and strategies defining the current Indo-Pak confrontation. The two rivals have gone beyond the stage of negotiation, and are testing each others resolve. The next step may be a preemptive strike by one against the other, and from there-- war.

I write this with no levity-- there is a strong case to be made against a war in the subcontinent. There is, however, also a case to be made in favor of one. I'd make the two, and hope to read your comments and views on the topic.

The core thesis I want to run by you is: "India cannot prosper inspite of Pakistan, and Pakistan can prosper because of India." ...

To expand on the statement above, there is no way India can be a flourishing democracy without being a growth-economy. To grow, India needs foreign investment, for which it needs security, which it cannot have if the current relations with Pakistan continue. I hope my words don't sound critical of Pakistan-- it is great country, and a greater nation, though a suffering state. But Pakistan has the potential to hold India back.

US and other western countries should give aid to Pakistan to develop infrastrucutre and institutions which will give people option or potential of prosperity rather than poverty and terrorism. I sometimes feel that people do not have whole lot of options to look forward to.

Posted by: LovePeace | Dec 26, 2008 4:14:07 PM

LovePeace, umm... what progress in India are you talking about? Highest rate of HIV infections in the world? Or the largest number of malnourished children on earth? Introducing nuclear weapons to the region? Female infanticide? Pogroms against minorities? Defying UN resolutions? Aiding and abetting terrorism in Sri Lanka and Pakistan? Blockading Nepal? Annexing Sikkim and Goa? The progress you refer to is enjoyed by a miniscule portion of Indian society, while the vast majority is still living in the dark ages.

As for Rev Rex,internal terrorism in Pakistan is largely funded and organized by India from Afghanistan. Before India entered Afghanistan, terrorism in Pakistan was at manageable levels. Since India's entry into Afghanistan, terrorism has broken all records, with thousands of pakistanis killed, Balochistan insurgency ignited, and attempted and successful assasinations of Pakistani leaders.

Although India has been busy undermining Pakistan's anti-terror effort, Pakistan has still managed to kill more terrorists than the entire NATO and US forces combined.

You people need to remember that all the top Al Qaeda leadership in our custody, including the planner of 9/11, is because Pakistan caught them and handed them over to us. Meanwhile all the Indians have done is steal our jobs.

Every time India goes to election, it starts crying wolf to its citizens. It starts crying foul towards Pakistan. In 60 plus years of prosperous India, 600 million plus people still live well below poverty levels. That's two times the population of US plus the population of Canada. In the city of Mumbai alone millions sleep on streets. Then India asks who is the perpetrator behind Mumbai attacks!!! It's the poverty stupid. Get your act straight India and stop war mongering games. Start treating the symptoms of your real troubles.

I don't think were at the war point yet. Every time the Press points something like this out it has been overblown. Rioting in the streets is usually a handful of people while the photographer uses a telephoto lens to get the shot. It also happened in Iran. They dont show the big picture just enough to create the story. Why not use a wide-angle lens? It would tell a different story. The press has overblown so many stories you have to view multiple sources to verify what is being said. Sensationalism will get us into a war one day.

THIS IS A REQUEST TO PRESIDENT ELECT OBAMA TO PLEASE DIRECT THE INDIAN PRIME MINISTER DR M.M. SING AS TO WHAT HE NEEDS TO DO WITH PAKISTAN.MY FIRST REQUEST AS A INDIAN AMERICAN TO PRESIDENT ELECT OBAMA IS CLEAN UP AZAD KASHMRE WHICH IS BETWEEN INDIA AND PAKISTAN WHERE ALL THE GARBAGE IS,THAT WILL MAKE WAY FOR MANY THINGS.

Waheed and MatterOfFact...Not for this conversation ,but in life always remember when you compare where we are, always compare with where we came from.No one is comparing India with US or other westernized nations. But the think which India has really achieved is an institution which allows democratic voice to be heard and democratic system to mature. And also about the claims for capturing terrorists, ask yourself this question"Can an arsonist be given credit for dialing 911?"Again my brother and friend , I am guessing you guys are from Pakistan or you have the best interests for Pakistan, let us not get into rhetorical attack. As a citizen of Pakistan try to strengthen the institution of democracy and generate a public opinion which is healthy for the common people.

Posted by: LovePeace | Dec 26, 2008 7:50:03 PM

Pakistan is a terrorist nation, and I believe US and other nations should stop funding Pakistan on the name of fighting against terror. These funds indirectly goes to insane Islamic jihadis. There is ample support of Taliban within Pakistan. Why US, and other not able to win that small nation ever 7 years, thats because Pakistan, is the shelter of all insane Jihadis. Pakistanis openly burns American flags on the streets. Its time to stand together against Pakistan, who is becoming an international Migraine-- as per "albright" and British PM.

India is trying to get the most out of Mumbai Terror attacks. Instead of threatening Pakistan and diverting attention of the world from the 'real' issue of Kashmir, India should try to face the truth.
India can never start war with Pakistan because Pakistan has nothing to lose but India, the world's new super power won't be able to stand on it's knees if India starts the war with Pakistan.
Instead of providing proof to Pakistan, Indian Govt. is consistently threatening to attack Pakistan.
As far as Mumbai attacks, it's simple rule of thumb that when something like that happen, you look for who's getting benefit or trying to create some mess out of that? US? Pakistan? Kashmiries?
In this case, Pakistan's involvement is least possibility because of US, Taliban, and Pakistan's internal financial situation doesn't allow them to even think of something like Mumbai attacks.
So, bottom line, Indians should face the reality and should free Kashmir or at least don't create more mess, just to divert the attention from the 'real' issue.

This world would be a better place without India. India is a terrorist country that murders its minorities at will. This fecal nation has contributed nothing to the world, but a population of over a billion morons. We are fed up of their terror. No one wants to play cricket with trash. Indians are pathologically slavish people, their disgustingly servile behavior towards whites, has destroyed the dignity and self respect of the entire South Asia.

It would be very easy for an Indian to point a finger back at you.But I guess that would not be mature behavior and that will make us "part of the problem".Let us try to acknowledge the problem a nd solve it or generate intentions and environment to solve it.I am pretty sure there are examples of mistreatment of minorities in India. But the good news is that India has a democratically elected government which represents wisdom of majority and protects minority.Look at the three mega stars of "Bollywood" , viz. Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan and Saif.Look at the last president of India, who is also considered a role model for most of young people.Look at one of the most succesful Cricket captains.I would like to say that minorites have done very well in this great country. But again I am not here to defend India or present a perception of India which is not true. I think the best thing for India would a prosperous and peaceful Pakistan , and that is the message citizens of Pakistan has to spread. They have to start this at home and then let the message go to neighborhood, then to community , city and state. Just try this , I am sure there is lot of talent in Pakistan which can be channeled in positive energy and Pakistan cold be proud of companies like Reliance and Tatas and Birlas. And Pakistan could be proud of having 3 to4 of its citizen in the world's richest individuals. I am syaing this to inspire citizens of Pakistan.

LovePeace, what is the point of developing democratic institutions that bring chaos and destruction? I am not a Pakistani, but am assuming you are at least of Indian origin, so you will know how the fanaticism of BJP political party helped it win elections. India's democratic institutions did not prevent it from introducing the terror of nuclear holocaust to more than a billion human beings. If India's institutions allow democratic voices to be heard, then why does India feel the need to defy UN resolutions requiring a plebiscite in Kashmir, and keeps that place under military occupation? Why are there so may insurgencies in India, from the Naxalites, the Maoists, Sikhs, and who knows who?

Having lived in both countries, I have seen first hand the hatred Indians have for Pakistan - even after 60 years they have not reconciled to its existence, and that is the bottom line reason for the dispute between the two countries.

Your arsonist analogy betrays your anti Pakistani sentiments, while you pretend to speak for Pakistan's benefit, because Pakistan did not carry out the 9/11 attacks, or had anything to do with it. It was carried out by fanatics who had benefitted from our actions to defeat the Soviets in Afghanistan.

I don't care about the internal situation of India or pakistan, all I want is the US to be loyal to its friends. Pakistan has stood with US ever since it won independence, although we have betrayed it time and again, while India was sleeping with our enemies until we defeated USSR with Pakistan's help and won the Cold War. Americans are loyal to their friends, and I want our foreign policy to reflect that trait, so we have a moral obligation to stand by Pakistan when it is threatened by its enemy - India.
